Murder Is Easy (Agatha Christie Collection) Kindle Edition
Agatha Christie’s ingenious murder mystery, now a sensational two-part thriller broadcast over Christmas on BBC One.
Starring David Jonsson as Fitzwilliam, alongside Morfydd Clark as Bridget; Penelope Wilton as Miss Pinkerton, Tom Riley as Lord Whitfield, Douglas Henshall as Major Horton, Mathew Baynton as Dr Thomas, Mark Bonnar as Reverend Humbleby and Tamzin Outhwaite as Mrs Pierce.
In a quiet English village, a killer is about to strike. Again and again.
Luke Fitzwilliam found it hard to credit Miss Pinkerton’s wild allegation that a multiple murderer was at work in the quiet English village of Wychwood – or her speculation that the local doctor was next in line.
But within hours, Miss Pinkerton had been found dead. Crushed by a passing car. Mere coincidence? Luke was inclined to think so – until another victim is found dead.

About the author

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 April 2010I am a big Agatha Christie fan - there is something in her writing that is hard to find in modern books, which often seem to involve distressing descriptions of people's traumatic childhoods. I prefer more escapism in my reading! I agree with other reviewers, however, that this is not her best novel. It's hard to put my finger on exactly why I didn't find it such a page turner as some others - I did enjoy it, and the ending was exciting - but I think perhaps it was because Luke is not a very strong character. You feel as if you don't really know his mind even at the end. I felt that the characters in general were less well drawn than in some of her other novels, even that of the murderer. As a contrast, the last of her books that I read before this one was "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" - and I thought that was fantastic and thought provoking - it seems as if a lot more work went into its writing than was the case with this one.
Like others, I hadn't guessed who the murderer was until the hints became quite strong just before the end. I could then see that the type of person that the murderer turns out to be follows one of several themes that Agatha Christie tends to use in her books - but despite the fact that I now understand her thought processes quite well in choosing murderers (her murderers' motives are usually love, money, revenge and fear of losing respectability) through having read a good many of her novels, I still never guess the murderer early on! This is always very cleverly disguised.
In summary, I enjoyed this book, but she has written better.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2025Brilliant enjoyable read .only took me 2 days to finish. Highly recommend reading this. One of Agatha Christies best books
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 February 2025This is a bit disappointing- not because of the murder mystery so much but the unbelievable romance element. It is difficult to know if the mystery element stands up, I felt it was signposted but I might have seen it on TV and therefore knew subconsciously. The tale doesn't really have much credibility but it may be a product of it's time. I can't imagine a modern day ex-policeman stumbling across an old lady telling a vague tale of murder and deciding to go and investigate.
It wasn't a terrible book for all that and some of the intrigue and cleverness of Christie carries through to lift this from below average to above.
Not The best Christie book out there but not bad either.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2025Never dissapointed with an Agatha Christie book this was no exception.Great story, couldn't put it down.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 June 2021I like Christie's standalone detectives. Here retired policeman Luke Fitzwilliam investigates murders with supernatural overtones; In The Pale Horse, historian Mark Easterbrook looks into a series of deaths apparently caused by voodoo. Murder is Easy was published in 1939, but feels as if set a few years earlier. At one point Luke light-heartedly suggests that society could well do without quite a lot of people. "But who would be the judge?" asks young Dr Thomas - but he doesn't get Luke arrested, or locked up. Who would have thought back then that anyone would take such an idea seriously?
There are many suggestions that something supernatural is going on - from the initial meetin in a train between Luke and Lavinia Pinkerton. "People have a LOOK, you know!" says dear old Lavinia. The local antique dealer "dabbles" in a Crowley-like cult. Luke poses as a folklorist and uncovers some genuine superstitions. Bridget, with her long black hair, is suggestively witch-like. She even goes out in a high wind without a hat - or a hair net! I am trying to imagine what you'd do with long hair in, say, 1935.
Anyway, I love this book. The 1982 film with Bill Bixby, Timothy West, Fiona Fullerton, Helen Hayes, Leigh Lawson, Shane Bryant and Olivia de Havilland is good, too. Only Freddy Jones strikes a wrong note.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2025Having purchased this book at the time the TV series was shown I have eventually got round to reading the book which differs a bit from the TV version but is as ever an Agatha Christie crime masterpiece. After reading her books for over 50 years I am always excited to read one that is new to me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2024The book was better than the TV adaptations. The plot was neatly constructed and easy to follow. The characters were realistic. There was a good twist at the end and the means, motive and opportunity was clearly explained. The only thing out of place was the love element; it really wasn't necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood rushing thrill .
Big fan of Mystery Queen’s thrillers . Right from Murder on the Orient Express , this was my first novel from her series which I read during my freshman year, her crime thrillers are fantastic with all the characters perfectly placed doing their acts as crafted beautifully by her . And when it seems impossible to detect the covert act then comes the most wisest of all Hercule Poirot the detective who uncovers deepest of the crime committed by his wits and keen observation.

It is not at all easy to know who the murder is. This book engages you since the very first chapter.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flojillo
La construcción de la trama es muy floja, con muchos detalles previsibles o carentes de lógica, que le restan consistencia. Aconsejo otras opciones; la autora tiene muchas novelas más atractivas, mucho mejor elaboradas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent non-series mystery from Christie's prime period
I thought that I had read all of Christie's output up through 1950 or so, but somehow I missed this book, first published in 1939. It's a non-series mystery so it lacks Poirot, Miss Marple, or Tuppence and Tommy. The central character, thrust into becoming an amateur detective who tries to get to the bottom or what might or might not be a series of murders, is a colonial police officer returning to England to retire.
The mystery, as nearly always with Christie, is fast paced and satisfying. One aspect of Christie's books that is often overlooked is the skill with which she writes of intelligent, self-possessed young women. They are almost invariably the most appealing characters in her books. That's the case here as well.
While this book may not be quite in the league of her very best books, such as "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd," it's still very entertaining. I imagine any Christie fan who hasn't yet read it will enjoy it.
