Jack, an eight year old boy in England, must try to seek sanctuary abroad with his family when their home is heavily bombed by the invading Russian army. They fight to stay together as they attempt to flee to Sangatte, a refugee camp in France for displaced British nationals. But to get there, they must first overcome hunger and thirst, rioters and unscrupulous scavengers, and the overwhelming menace of the war-machine of the invading Russian military.

This was so sad and really brought home the plight of the refugees - made all the more real because it was set in Britain. A brilliant and gripping story that I sincerely hope never happens here. It was on my mind for quite a few days after I finished it.

Wow!! This book was quite simply unputdownable! It has little stylistic merit and I found it a harrowing read, and yet it is no exaggeration to say it has challenged me and shaken me out of my complacency in a way no other book has ever done. Very highly recommended!!

The best thing he's ever written and I'm a long term fan of his stuff.

    Finished it in one session

Warning though tissues should be at hand
