They fight to stay together as they attempt to flee to Sangatte, a refugee camp in France for displaced British nationals. But to get there, they must first overcome hunger and thirst, rioters and unscrupulous scavengers, and the overwhelming menace of the war-machine of the invading Russian military.

    This was so sad and really brought home the plight of the refugees - made all the more real because it was set in Britain. A brilliant and gripping story that I sincerely hope never happens here. It was on my mind for quite a few days after I finished it.

    Wow!! This book was quite simply unputdownable! It has little stylistic merit and I found it a harrowing read, and yet it is no exaggeration to say it has challenged me and shaken me out of my complacency in a way no other book has ever done. Very highly recommended!!
