It's quite a challenge to make a detective constable the lead character in a crime novel, but Lynda La Plante does a cracking job of it in Buried. DC Jack Warr is clearly destined for higher things, and I look forward to following his progress ― PETER ROBINSON, No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author of the DCI Banks series

'I enjoyed the pace of the book, not too fast but not too slow either. For anyone who has read the series Widows by Ms Plante they will recognise some of the characters especially Dolly Rawlins. This is a well thought out and executed story, with a couple of things I didn't see coming.' ―

'Packed with revealing flashbacks, fast-paced action, an unforgettable cast of characters, including the restless, unpredictable Jack Warr, and La Plante's dark, satirical brand of northern humour,
Buried is a masterclass in visual storytelling.'Lancashire Post

'This has a gritty and twisty plot which is so engrossing, but for me the real marvel is the characters. They are all so well developed and their personal lives and stories are heartbreaking at times, so well written you forget this is fiction.' ―

'In a book with numerous twists and turns, we were treated to a proper 'gasp' moment at the end, which, although shocking, was in-keeping with what we had read about Jack. This set up the next book nicely and I can't wait to read where Lynda La Plante takes DC Warr next. Buried is a book that I can definitely imagine on the small screen, so I have my fingers crossed that it will be optioned for TV. This promises to be another huge hit for the author.' ―

Even though I have watched numerous dramatisations of Lynda La Plante’s novels this is the first that I have read. And what an introduction it is! Even though it is the start of a series featuring a new team of detectives there are strong links to the book series Widows. I was pleased that I knew that storyline, even though I would have still enjoyed this novel without knowing anything about it.

My first reaction when reading this novel was that the author writes in away that reflects her enthusiasm and personality when she is being interviewed. At a very past pace and one that is very refreshing. Jack, her lead, wasn’t a saint and he often came to close to crossing the fine line in more than just criminal activity. He was probably one of the more convincing fictional detective I have met when reading crime fiction. You saw his strengths, his weaknesses and his frustration at having his efforts ignored or not being able to be proven. You also saw his devotion to his partner and his adoptive parents and the guilt he felt with his ongoing determination to find his birth father. With his team members I felt a combination of liking, annoyance and sympathy towards all three. None of these characters approached their jobs in the same way, again I felt this was a true reflection of detection.

The women that Jack was investigating were people that I struggled to judge. Some I had a lot of sympathy for, a couple I really liked and wanted to know more about. Some of them made me laugh and there were more poignant moments the more I read. I would definitely be interested in reading the Widows series and I’m looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

I have not read this author in awhile and had forgotten what an excellent story teller she was. It's a complex plot with a lot of characters that spans over 20 years. My only regret was that it did not include a glossary with a quick reference of the many characters involved. Great story that will keep you guessing until the end.

Reviewed in the United States on 24 January 2021
BURIED is Lynda La Plante’s latest thriller. (published in 2020)
The title is a great thriller; crime drama; police procedural; mystery; detective story.
It is the first book in a new series by Lynda La Plante featuring detective Jack Warr. It is also a culmination of sorts to WIDOWS featuring Dolly Rawlins, wife of notorious criminal Harry Rawlins.
Ms. La Plante also writes a ‘young Jane Tennison’ series; Jane Tennison of Prime Suspect fame and the Anna Travis series.

“Millions of stolen, untraceable bank notes lie untouched in an old Victorian cottage, the hidden legacy of Dolly Rawlins and her ‘widows’. When a fire breaks out at the deserted cottage, with a badly charred body inside with what looks like thousands of burnt bank notes, it attracts the attention of the police and one young detective in particular, Jack Warr.”

Excellent, tense reading. My only comment is that there are a heck of a lot of characters to keep track of! ****
