Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd.: The latest hilarious feel-good fiction from the internationally bestselling Jonas Jonasson and the most fun you’ll have in 2021 Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 3,827 ratings

The brand-new adventure from the beloved author of The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared.

Victor Alderheim has a lot to answer for. Not only has he heartlessly tricked his young ex-wife, Jenny, out of her art gallery inheritance, but he has also abandoned his son, Kevin, to die in the middle of the Kenyan savanna.

It doesn’t occur to Victor that Kevin might be rescued and adopted by a Maasai medicine man, or that he might be expected to undergo the rituals expected of all new Maasai warriors – which have him running back to Stockholm as fast as you can say circumcision without anaesthetic.

Back in Stockholm, Kevin’s path crosses with Jenny’s – and they have an awful lot to talk about, not least a shared desire to get even with Victor. So it’s convenient when they run into a man selling revenge services, who has an ingenious idea involving Victor’s cellar, a goat, some forged paintings, four large boxes of sex toys, and a kilo of flour …

Product description

Review

"A revenge scheme goes hilariously awry in this zany if glib farce from Jonasson. . . . [Sweet Sweet Revenge LTD is] a page turner." -- Publishers Weekly

"In the first chapters of Sweet, Sweet Revenge Ltd there's enough plot for several novels... Jonas Jonasson, best known for The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, is a wildly inventive writer, often funny, who stuffs his bonkers but entertaining story with art, politics and romance, and a tongue-in-cheek meditation on the philosophy of getting even. Great fun." -- The Times (London)

"Jonas Jonasson creates hilarity out of brilliantly absurd plots, whether it is a 100-year-old man escaping through an old folk' home window, or a South African peasant girl who saves the King of Sweden. His latest unlikely hero is Kevin who is abandoned by his callous father on the Kenyan savannah in the expectation he will be eaten by lions...Add a crooked art dealer, a lazy Swedish policeman, an ophthalmologist whose wife ditched him for a urologist, and we are set for delicious Jonasson mayhem." -- Daily Express (London)

"Uproariously funny." -- Shelf Awareness

"A glorious romp which confirms Jonas Jonasson's status as the most brilliant comic novelist alive." -- Daily Mirror (UK)

"[A] comedic epic." -- Los Angeles Daily News

Fabulous book both humorous and serious. Keeps you reading. Second time around and even better than the first. Definitely recommended.

I haven’t read any of Jonas Jonasson’s novels before so wasn’t sure what to expect from this story – maybe some sort of comic crime caper, judging by the cover and blurb?

While this technically is what I got, the book is more reminiscent of a stage farce, with characters popping on and off from the wings, conveniently missing each other by minutes and constantly mucking up each other’s plans, more by accident than design.

The tone of the book is one of dry, sarcastic humour – which I would normally love – but the narrative voice is strangely detached and, when combined with a cast of either extremely or somewhat unlikable characters, this makes it hard to really immerse yourself in the story and get invested in the outcome.

There is lots of loving discussion about art, artists and the valuation of art works which I found very interesting but between that and the detailed character (and there are LOTS of characters!) backstories, the pace of the story is rather slow, long-winded and meandering.

Despite this, it’s still quite a fun bit of escapism and I do love the idea of a revenge bureau, even if this book shows it doesn’t quite work, even on paper!

Another great book from Jonas Jonasson

I devoured his first book and enjoyed every page. For me, while reading this book, I found myself speed reading the page to find something to move the story on. I gave the story 3 stars only because of the effort it must have taken to write the book.

Just love the sense of humour with all the crazy twists and turns. Probably unique in having in solved Hitler, Sweden, Germany, London, Stockholm, Kenya and the Masai Mara as well as art dealers, detectives, art critics, art experts, medicine men, opthalmists, advertising agencies, civil servants, and currencies in kroner, dollars, GBPounds, South Korean whatever, cows, goats and chickens. The obvious expression is "You couldn't make it up" but this very clever and entertaining author has done just that and, of course, makes it sound like it all really happened, which I wish it had even if the dog wasn't under the table.

I love Jonasson's work, because I love quirky and ridiculous, and this has a fine dollop of both in equal measure. His writing is beautiful and it is laugh out loud funny, while also having some really clever plot twists.

Newcomer's to this author need to have the capacity simply to go with it. If you are able to do this, you will simply adore his work. I have read all but one of his books (that has just been remedied, I have just ordered the one I haven't read).

Our world has been a dark and serious place for a while now. The ability to spend an afternoon in my shed losing myself in another much nicer world has been just what I needed. Total escapism at its best. Jonasson is now officially on my 'fantasy dinner party list' his creative mind is pure genius.

Good holiday read very funny but is very formulaic to his other books but as they are also farces it is probably to be expected. I would rate it as 4.5. Still an enjoyable read.

This was our book club's January book. It took about 50 pages for me to get into it... characters and settings were multiple. Laughed out loud many times. Dark humor... kind of like Fargo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny comedy set in Sweden
Reviewed in Canada on 1 September 2022
I thought this book was uproariously funny and enjoyed its laugh-out-loud moments. However, it was longer than it needed to be. An added bonus was learning about some leading artists that were unknown to me. The comedy connects some diverse characters in a surprising way. The story is set mainly in Sweden.

The despicable, vile Victor owns an art gallery that should have belonged to his mild, younger wife, Jenny. He ignored her except when tricking her out of her inheritance and then promptly divorced her. Like Hitler, Victor abhorred modern art from the time of the Impressionists and only concentrated on realistic paintings in his gallery. His ultra-conservative right-wing views on art, race, politics, etc., align with those of Hitler. He left his only son, Kevin, in the wilds of Africa to be eaten by lions.

Later, Jenny and Kevin meet by chance in Stockholm. Their mutual hatred of Victor leads to a romance and a goal of revenge. There is Hugo, who had a successful career in advertising. He left this position to establish a less competent Revenge business. Joining them is a Maasai medicine man who comes to Sweden knowing nothing about the outside world or of modern conveniences banned in his settlement. He arrives in Stockholm in the winter clad in his traditional garb and carrying tribal weapons. Misunderstandings led him into all sorts of trouble and amusing situations.

Paintings by the deceased artist, Irma Stern, play a significant role in this revenge plot. I did not expect that I would not only be entertained but that this book would inform me. I had not known that Irma Stern was an actual painter of now valuable works of art. Thanks to Google, I was able to view her paintings on the internet. I was also introduced to artists whose work was destroyed mainly by Hitler's contempt towards Impressionism but was able to view a few paintings that remained.

Getting even with Victor includes a goat, bags of flour, and sex toys left in his home, plus the appearance that he is forging Stern's paintings. This revenge ruins Victor's reputation, but he can live with that humiliation as he has a scheme to add to his fortune through more trickery.

A hilarious, overly long, madcap comedy with unlikely connections and subplots. Thanks to the internet, I could view and learn about some works of art previously unknown to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a cheerful tonic of a book
Reviewed in India on 15 May 2022
While the plot takes a little time to build up, with the arrival of Ole M. the Younger in Stockholm from Kenya, in search of his son Kevin, one can't stop laughing. Mad revenge being planned, with lots of hiccups, is a delicious theme.
    Flawlessly translated.
As soon as I finished the book, I started all over again, this time at very slow speed.
And promptly ordered another by the same author.

4.5 Sterne.
