A PopSugar Best New Book of December

She’s an avenging angel…who tempts him like the devil…

If Miss Laura Hopkins desired a husband, her beauty, brains, and fortune would make it easy to acquire one. Instead, Laura prefers to put her charms to another purpose entirely. Using the alias Lady Sterling, Laura helps young women who have been mistreated or compromised by their employers. Some might see it as theft and blackmail. For Laura, it is a small measure of justice. But while in pursuit of her latest target, Laura is unexpectedly aided by a gentleman who announces that he is
Lord Sterling.

As a spy for the Crown, Captain Jeremy Addison, Viscount Sterling, has been assigned all manner of dangerous missions, though none as complicated as investigating the beguiling Lady Sterling. Forced to pose as newlyweds at the home of a disreputable earl, Laura and Jeremy forge an unexpected alliance…and a passionate connection. But can such a dangerous masquerade possibly lead to a real, lasting love?

PRAISE FOR WHO’S THAT EARL

“Craig delights with a fast-paced, intrigue-filled plot and expertly developed characters. Regency fans will eagerly anticipate future installments.”

Craig is a new author for me & a gem of a find. I really like her sharpwitted, fast paced style of writing with an undercurrent of sweet charm and tender warmth to her humour. That added a vulnerability and real likeability to her characters.
She delightfully entwined a spot of the theatrical and laugh out loud comedy with tear inducing intimacy, great chemistry, hesitant attraction, sharpwitted wordplay and a touch of steam to make this one engaging read.
The fun codebreaker meets avenging angel plotline as they were forced to play newly weds - to infiltrate a miscreant rakehell's home to uncover his secrets and stop his sexually predatory behavior - added an element of suspense and the unexpected to this delicious charade. Especially, when the hero is so refreshingly endearing and so far removed from the arrogant spymaster we are used to seeing. I just loved the fact Jeremy was shy, virtuous, needed to do what's right and intensely trustworthy. He was the perfect foil and balm to Laura, the infamous Lady Stirling, with her bold, daring intellect and plucky tenacity.
A brilliant, fun filled read! I will definitely be hunting out the rest of the series for I enjoyed this entertaining tale immensely. I was never hindered once by the fact I dipped straight into the middle of this series. I found this the perfect medicine to add levity & brighten up a very dull day!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book by an amazing author!
Reviewed in the United States on 28 December 2021
Okay, let me start this off by saying that I have been eagerly anticipating this book for months now. The instant I finished One Thing Leads to a Lover, I was ready for this book. Susanna Craig is an insta-buy author for me and one of my very favorite historical romance authors.

So, Better Off Wed. Lady thief? Check. Lady thief who targets awful men in the interest of helping the women they've wronged. CHECK. How could I not adore Laura? She's clever and brave and intrepid. Enter Jeremy. Oh, Jeremy. Bookish, kind, trustworthy, shy, somewhat unsure, gentlemanly Jeremy. Look, I was lost from the start with that one. Add that he's utterly devoted to doing what's right and... who wouldn't swoon?

I really enjoyed the evolution of their relationship. Fake marriage isn't my favorite trope--far from it, actually. But in this book? It was done so well that I forgot I don't care for it. Laura and Jeremy enter into their roles as actors with constantly changing parts. It. Was. Amazing. And the theater references? *chef's kiss*

Basically, as I expected going into this, there wasn't a thing I didn't love. I laughed out loud--often. I swooned at the romance, fanned myself at the *very hot* sex scenes, and got teary eyed with emotion. I don't know how she does it, but every Susanna Craig book I read is even better than the previous. Her work is amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars slow burn, intellectual partnership
Reviewed in the United States on 20 March 2022
Jeremy a quiet scholar code breaker was not a field intelligence officer but a back room worker until his General decided he needed some excitement and sent him on the trail of the notorious Lady Sterling. Not to bring her in but to determine whose side she gathered information for and recruit her as a spy. The joke was that he was the real Lord Sterling and therefore he should marry her. The premise is find her, determine her motives and loyalties and in the process fall in love. How we get from beginning meets to falling in love is interesting, and different. It’s a quick satisfying read with a very capable intelligent female heroine and a consistently kind, gentle, respectful, highly intelligent hero.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A CODE BREAKER AND A THIEF-TAKER
Reviewed in the United States on 28 December 2021
Laura Hopkins, alias Lady Sterling, Thief Taker, has made it her mission to help women who have been preyed upon by their employer. Taking secret items and money from the predator is to stop his continued predation and give the women another life. Captain Jeremy Addison is a code breaker. Intrigued by Lady Sterling, what irony that he is the real Lord Sterling. His job is to find Lady Sterling and marry her or did his commander say that in jest? A carriage accident finds Jeremy assisting in Laura's rescue. Pretending to be man and wife, they infiltrate the home of Lord Thornton, a predator and a spy. I find this series totally entertaining with humor, intrigue and passion between Laura and Jeremy. Once again we read about the cookbook that isn't a cookbook and a book of chess is something else. STEAMY with witty conversations.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Caper….
Reviewed in the United States on 2 January 2022
As someone who came of age in the 80’s, I’m a big fan of Susanna Craig’s Love and Let Spy Series, each of which is inspired by some of my fave TV shows from that era.

Better Off Wed is very brilliant take on Remington Steele, a detective show that is just a perfect inspiration.

Laura Hopkins is an avenging angel for women in service who have been abused by their employers. She ensures that the survivors get their due and the villains are left with with quite valuable lessons. Laura is smart and determined, as well as able to fly under the radar. Until she can’t.

Jeremy Addison is a code breaker with connections to Laura of which she is not aware. He’s almost on her level of cleverness and their chemistry is off the charts. Their partnership is very trust-dependent and they find it pretty quickly.

This is a fun read with some underlying plots that come to fruition at the end. I’m addicted this series and can’t wait for the book that is introduced in the epilogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Codebreaker Spy meets Herioic Outlaw and she steals his heart . . .
Reviewed in the United States on 28 December 2021
Prompted by his commanding officer, General Scott, codebreaker Jeremy Addison searches for Lady Sterling, a Robin Hood reborn in the feminine form. Jeremy finds more than he anticipated when he and the respectable Laura Hopkins (aka Lady Sterling) combine forces to achieve justice. As the real life Viscount Sterling, Jeremy's unprepared for the temptation Laura presents, not just to his virtue but to his heart.
Miss Laura Hopkins steals from wealthy men, not for her profit, but to right wrongs they have inflicted on others. She's not ready to meet the real Lord Sterling, but uses her new married status to carry out her plans to give a lecherous noble his just deserts. That the spy she meets will decipher her means that this caper has become much more dangerous. What happens when a thief's heart gets stolen?
Better Off Wed makes a "sterling" contribution to Susanna Craig's Love and Let Spy Series with its wit, heat, and heart. (But you can also read it first and go back and enjoy the other books in the series, and Craig's other series!)
