The Slave Wars: A Captivating Guide to the Servile Wars and Spartacus (Military History) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

Two captivating manuscripts in one book:
  • The Servile Wars: A Captivating Guide to the Three Slave Revolts Against the Roman Republic
  • Spartacus: A Captivating Guide to the Thracian Gladiator Who Led the Slave Rebellion Called the Third Servile War against the Roman Republic

In ancient Rome, the use of slave labor in all levels of society was a part of the natural order. Eventually, like with any other empire, these less fortunate individuals, who found themselves with fewer rights than even livestock, would find the courage to stand up and fight for freedom against their all-powerful masters.

These revolts would turn into all-out wars and go down in the annals of time as the Servile Wars. The men and generals that fought in these conflicts would find their names forever written in the tomes of history. Some would be immortalized as heroes who stood up against tyranny, and others would be villainized. But no one could argue that these uprisings were the catalysts for change.

Some of the topics covered in part 1 of this book include:
  • Slavery in ancient Rome
  • How Sicily was a hotbed for slave rebellions
  • How Spartacus brought southern Italy to its knees
  • The life of a gladiator
  • How the slave revolts changed the Roman Republic
  • Why the Roman Colosseum was built
  • How the gladiator games were carried out
  • And so much more!

Some of the topics covered in part 2 of this book include:
  • Thrace and Its Enemies
  • On the Romans’ Side
  • Sold
  • The Real Gladiator
  • Ambush
  • Facing the Legions
  • The Lone Volunteer
  • At the Feet of the Alps
  • Defeat
  • Betrayed by the Pirates
  • Crassus’ Wall
  • The Last Stand
  • Aftermath
  • Legacy
  • And much, much more!

This book pair complements each other perfectly. “The Servile Wars” describes more in detail the horrific lives suffered by slaves under the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. There were three uprisings, the third being led by Spartacus. More attention is given to the rebellion and provides a brief introduction to Spartacus.
“Spartacus” focuses more on the historical character Spartacus; his background; his training; the atrocities of the Roman elite that lead to the rebellion. Movies do not do justice to history. One must read & comprehend it to appreciate & fully understand life as it was during this period.
Another winner from the Captivating History series. I would also recommend “The Roman Games” which would complement this bundle.
