A Big Gay Rom-Zom-Com with Heart

Jesse Spark has a broken heart and in a few short weeks he'll require major surgery to repair it - which means he only has a month to accomplish two almost-impossible tasks.

1) Shoot his epic zombie movie on a shoestring budget if he has any hope of getting into film school.

2) Fall in love before this surgery lands him with a huge scar - because how will anyone ever fancy him after that?

Sex Education meets Love, Simon - with fake zombies - in this savagely funny gay YA romance about body image, self-acceptance and falling in love, all while shooting a low-budget zombie flick!

Fun, fresh and authentic, this is the feel-good hit of #hotboysummer, perfect for fans of Alice Oseman, Ciara Smyth and Adam Silvera.

Fun rom-com
I raced through Broken Hearts and Zombie Parts as I loved it so much. It's such a lovely story, loved all the Horror film references and main characters. I know they are going to occupy my mind for a long time to come! This is such a great read and deals with important issues about body image issues, medical conditions and general teen anxieties but handled in a sensitive way and keeping the humour throughout. Loved it!

A bit of my views on William Husseys work 1st.
I've read The Outrage by Hussey before, a very important and incredibly relevant book. One that I feel should become school reading material the same way Lord of the Flys is, especially with the important subject matter it handles that sadly is becoming more relevant.
Hussey is amazing at creating not only characters you quickly become attached to but the environments they inhabit & interact in with just enough detail to visualise it without bogging you down with details (sorry Tolkin).
He's also incredibly talented at pulling at your heart strings, which for this book is appropriate. I've not finished his previous work Hideous Beauty, but my god: only A Monster Calls has ever made me cry whilst reading a book before.
Broken Hearts and Zombie Parts has all of Husseys talent as a writer and storyteller on show with the addition of some hilarious comedy. There's a scene involving a car & a horde of zombie actors that had me in stitches at the reveal.
If you're looking at reviews you've already looked at the synopsis so let's cut to the chase; Jesse and his journey in this book is an important read regardless of your own health & sexuality. To some it might sound shallow of his fears that the scar for the operation that could save his life will make him ugly & never find love. But I promise you once you start reading and see thru Jesse's eyes, the eyes of a frightened boy not only of what needs to be done to him, but how society will judge him afterwards you will understand. And when u reach the day of the operation if you do not wanna give this boy the biggest hug as he prepares for it your dead inside. The fact this came from Husseys own experience & fears made me instantly message him saying how the scene affected me and thanked him for sharing it with the world.
And yet this book is still hilarious whilst having these deep emotional moments. I've only read books by Simon James Green that can tackle emotionally upsetting moments with hilarious comedic moments and not feel like emotional whiplash.
Cannot recommend this book enough, I loved it.

It's been good to read a YA Gay love story which has a UK focus. There are so many US authors, we need to celebrate our UK writers. And there is so much to celebrate in this effervescent story of Jesse, a gay 17 year old and his best friend Cas making a Zombie movie in the weeks before Jesse faces having open heart surgery. During this story, told in the first person by Jesse, we see celebration, betrayal and the value of friendship. And Jesse has to learn to love himself. Not a bad lesson for a YA, novel. I loved this story. The main characters have their foibles and secrets but are still so lovable that you hope that they will conquer their demons. This is indeed a lovely romantic novel, deserving of its pink cover.

    ***AUDIO BOOK VERSION***
Broken Hearts and Zombie Parts was such a cute and fun listen, which I enjoyed listening to in the car as i was travelling to and from a weekend away. Not only does this book cover some important issues such as body image, bullying, internalised homophobia, bereavement of a parent, and heart problems/surgery (to name a few), but it handles them in a sensitive and relatable way. I loved Jesse's character and the dynamics and comradrey between his friendship group. I think Jesse is quite a relateable teenage character, and his passion and talent for movie making was inspiring and believable and not overdone. I found this a lovely, touching, and heartwarming read and will definitely be looking to read/listen to more books from this author.

I ordered this book having previously read “The Outrage”, also by William Hussey. I knew this would be different in terms of genre, but I was delighted to see that his ability to craft three dimensional, emotional characters was just as strong in “Broken Hearts and Zombie Parts”. On top of that, I was laughing my head off from the first page.
The motivations of some characters were intriguing, but the resolution tied everything up beautifully. The main character, Jesse, is a gloriously nerdy, passionate, self-doubting teen, who just happens to be facing a very serious medical condition; something that is dealt with with sensitivity and good-humour without diminishing the range of fears and concerns that it brings up.
Be sure to read the author’s note.

A great book with well developed characters that you love and enjoy the journeys they take. Brilliant representation of up to the minute issues faced by both young and older people around body issues. would make great tv series of movie. Preferable on a channel that can be seen by everyone and not those that can afford to spend money on satellite channels. Highly recommended

Yes, it's a gay romcom but there is so much more to this book - family relationships, friendship drama, body image issues, and facing a major life changing event when you're only 17. The characters are fresh and believable and the scrapes they get into while filming a very ambitious sounding zombie film are hilarious. But Hussey skillfully weaves in a more serious undercurrent, while still keeping the overall tone light, and doesn't overlook the challenges faced by young LGBTQ+ people today. Very different in tone to his previous books, I rather hope we see more of Jesse in the future.

This book is incredibly witty and funny, and honestly had me full on laughing out loud often. But more than that, it's also incredibly moving, dealing deftly with body dysmorphia and fears when approaching a major surgery/life-changing medical event. By halfway through, I simply couldn't put the book down, and I have repeatedly recommended this book to friends

In this chaotic and despondent world we seem to now live in a heart warning story that will put a smile on your face and maybe a little more faith in our fellow travellers. Highly recommended.

Loved the settings, the MC feelings were well written, and the twists and revelations were well executed. There is another review saying it could work as a limited series, and I have to say I agree tbh

I loved this book so much, I felt like it was written especially for me. Literally tailored to my taste.
The love story, the friendship dynamic, the angst, seeing them making that movie... Everything was so perfect, I didn't want the book to end. I honestly wish I was more capable to capture with emotions all the feelings I had while reading it. It was so heartwarming!!!! It was probably the first time I had the urge to reread a book as soon as I had finished it. It absolutely entered the top5 of my favourite books ever.
Even that little "mystery" was so well developed, that it made me want to pick up Hussey's mystery novels. One thing is sure, I'll definitely pick up his other books!

4.0 out of 5 stars YA with a solid message

I liked this a lot. The body image issues are very relevant and tie in well with the internet-driven prejudices about appearance that dominate teens and YAs thinking. The mortality issue is very well dealt with and refreshing to find in the queer YA genre - it's been overlooked and William Hussey opens the theme up well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Insufferable and Insulting
Reviewed in Australia on 10 June 2024
There is so much wrong with this book and not much right. Most of all it’s the annoying main character that the writer clearly thinks he was writing as “adorably bumbling” but comes off as just infuriating. None of the relationships are either realistic or (even suspending disbelief) make any sense. We also don’t have and room to care about any stakes because we are shown no background and the stakes are very very low to begin with.

Finally, and most egregious is the CONSTANT use of the accidental interruption of conversations to allow for the plot to justify being almost 400 pages, when it could have been 50 if the second interruption hadn’t happened… second of 10+. And it could be that short a story because again, there is almost absolutely no plot. There is almost a plot a times, but the writer was clearly determined not to bother with it. I know this is for young readers, but even when I was 10 I would have felt insulted to be talked down to like this.
