Soul Quest (The Soul Quest Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
human right of passage but how normal would it be for someone who isn't
entirely human?
Let's say you're special, capable of harnessing
the Earth's energy to defeat soul sucking monsters and you don't even know it.
You go to school, meet new people and form
friendships only to discover that you and your new click are something
otherworldly. You're life becomes a comic book cliché. By day you solve algebra
problems and by night you rid the world of evil beings.
This is my life. My quest is to protect innocent
souls... and pass the ninth grade.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Soul Quest is rich with re-imagined folklore and has a great teen narrative voice... This is one complex world cool enough to lose yourself in.
- Aubrie Dionne, author of Nebula's Music
I love the way Ms. Jones captures not only the full high school experience, but masters the young adult voice so perfectly... I highly recommend this author and I cannot wait to read the next in the series!
- Addison Moore, author of the Celestra series
This was a fun read and when Amy pulled me into the plot and action, the story moved fast for me...
I really liked the concept of Daevas and Aengels as the villains!
- Cheri Schmidt, author of the Fateful series
Other Notable Commendations!
The descriptions in Soul Quest are quite beautiful. I especially like the description of Arcadia (and that she chose to call it that). Her interpretations of demonic infection, guardian angels, and soul mirrors are clever and serve the story well.
- Amy Strickland, author of the Olympia Heights series

About the author
Amy Maurer Jones has been happily married to her own version of Edward Cullen for sixteen years. She lives in the small town of Tabor City, North Carolina (close to the North and South Carolina shore) with her husband Kelly and their two beautiful children, Olivia and Keaton.
Amy loves reading and writing Young Adult because she finds young people inspiring. She appreciates how teens are able to look at the world with a fresh perspective and willingly open their minds to the endless possibilities that life has to offer. She particularly enjoys writing strong heroines who face problems head on, learn, grow and mature into the type of people who do the right thing.
When Amy isn't reading and writing, she teaches high school theater arts and dance. To say that Amy has a flare for all things creative would be an understatement, just don't ask her to assemble anything that requires instructions or sadly, you will be out of luck!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2011I received this e-book from the author for review. This did not affect my review in any way.
The story starts off in the present with Liv and her best friend Jedd. She wants to tell him that she's a human oracle of earth but not sure how to tell him. Liv also doesn't know that Jedd seems to know things that humans should not know about the spirit world. She also thinks that she wants to be more than friends with him. Then the story jumps to the past and tells of how the guardians came about and how they became Liv, Meena, Brayan, and Laith's guardians. It goes on to tell the story of each human oracle, how they grew up and how they found out that they were oracles and had guardians. Then back in the present where the story really takes off. They know they are soul sucking Aengels and Daevas around they just don't know who they are yet.
All four human oracles are running for positions in the freshman class student government. That is how they meet and find out about one another. Together they seek out the Aengels and Daevas and find out who is behind the murders in the city.
This story drew my in from the first page and when I had time to read I just didn't want to stop. I liked how strong all the characters were on their own and as a group. The relationships between the couples was good, I would like to see Liv and Jedd become a couple, although maybe it will be a love triangle with Beau included. The storyline was well written and it took me back to when I was in high school. I was somewhat shocked of how it ended but looking forward to reading the next two books. This was a really good read and I'm recommending it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2018First, let me say that, overall, I find the story itself rather intriguing. I have a few issues with the story, but overall, I think that the story is OK.
I think it might make a decent made for TV movie. And I think this author should continue writing.
But...
Editing is important. I've reached the 80% mark in the book and feel I must write the review now, rather than when (if) I finish the book. To be fair, I probably WILL finish the book, partly just because managed to drag my way through it this far. Again, the story held my attention. I'm writing the review now because of serious editing issues.
Again, editing is important.
The plethora of misused words, along with a few elided words and verbs used in the wrong tense is making it more and more difficult to continue. Normally I would have stopped reading long before this, but I found this story intriguing enough to want to finish reading it.
As it's the first of a trilogy, and I seriously doubt I'll be purchasing the next one, due to the editorial issues with this one. I may not finish it since I really have no intention of continuing to read through such jarring errors that keep yanking me back to reality rather than letting me really, thoroughly, get into the enjoyment of the story.
The latest (and only quoted example I'm giving) is near the end, at the 80% mark. A student arrives at a school dance to find the entrance decorated "with a large heart shaped archway covered with white tool and red and pink carnations."
The word is tulle, not tool. This, so far, is the most egregious misuse I've come across and one of the most jarring, as I was just really getting back into the story from the prior set of misused words, and suddenly had an image of an archway covered with a giant hammer or saw, painted white.
There are misuses of there vs. their, and many places where compound words such as outside are separated to out side, which, while jarring, don't bring totally bizarre images to mind.
A good editor (or perhaps running it by several different "editing" readers) could make a big difference in weeding out these sorts of errors and make reading this story a pleasant diversion rather than a constantly jarring experience.
Honestly, I wouldn't give it a 5 even without the errors, but at least a 3 or maybe even a 4.
As my Kindle is currently estimating only 7 minutes left in the book, I probably will finish reading it, just to see how it all turns out and what the cliffhanger will be that is supposed to make me want to buy the next in the series.
I'd like to say that I'd buy the next one but can't justify spending money on a book that is likely to be just as jarring to read as this one is.
It's not a bad book, but with all the errors, I can't really say that it's a good one either.
Update: I did finish the book but it does not change my review. The preview of the second book in the series showed that it has the same editing issues as the first so I will definitely not buy it. I wish the author all the best, and to those who can enjoy the books well enough, despite the issues...well, enjoy! More power too you and thanks for helping the author make money!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2011Amazon Synopsis:
Do you remember how horrified you were about the idea of attending high school? I remember ticking off those last miserable days of my summer vacation following my eighth grade year. Maybe you don't, maybe you were one of 'those people.' You know who I'm talking about, people like Melissa Small, the distinguished District Attorney, Larry Small's daughter, popular, gorgeous... and absolutely terrifying to someone like me, Liv Glyn. No, I am far from measuring up to the standards required to make Melissa's crowd. I'm not even close. I'm just a simple man's daughter, mostly tolerated by my peers with average looks. If this isn't depressing enough for you, stay tuned, it gets worse. I was commanded with Spirit at birth by the Great Spirit, Hala. I know, it sounds crazy but it's true. If you think it's difficult being a teenager, try being a teenager who was born destined to save the world from soul sucking Daevas and their mutant progeny Aengels. There are four of us. My companions of Spirit are Laith, Brayan and Meena. Melissa Small is Laith's step sister and she is always meddling where she doesn't belong, further complicating our lives. To make matters even worse, my best friend Jedd is apparently aware of things that are typically undetectable to ordinary humans. So, I have to lie to Jedd, the boy who has been my constant standby since the third grade, to shield him from the horrible and very dangerous truth. Did I mention that I think I'm falling in love with him? The term awkward doesn't even begin to cover it, trust me. Welcome to the mess that is my life.
This book is great. The author captures the true young adult voice and creates a teenage atmosphere. The plot is intriguing and novel, the characters fresh and charismatic. The mystery moved the book along quickly with the romance being the added draw-in for the reader. This book wasn't a run-of-the-mill teenage romance, the plot prevents the reader from thinking that. The main character easily endeared herself to the reader, the meddling supporting character provided a good foil for the main character as well as some comic relief. The background of the plot is both exciting and interesting, the reader will not be disappointed. There is a bit of something for everyone: intrigue, romance, action, drama, young adult, mystery, comedy, etc... The ending was a little bit surprising to say the least, but this reader was happy to learn that there would be another book to come! This book is great for young adult readers.
