Fantastic! A terrific start to a new series.Fantastic! A terrific start to a new series. Vampires have come forward and claimed their space in our world. Along with them, a new problem: human addiction to vampire blood, AKA Crimson Rush. Children are being turned into vampires to supply the new drug of choice, leaving social workers to try to clean up the mess of broken homes and child abuse. Nicole, having been a foster child herself, is passionate about saving these kids and finding safe homes for them. Damon and his league of Vampire Warriors have been brought in to teach Nicole and her coworkers how to defend themselves since their jobs are getting more and more dangerous. Nicole is doing too good a job at saving these kids and interrupting the blood trade, so a hit is taken out on her life. Damon and his friends now must find out who wants her dead.

Nicole may be a tiny woman, but she is full of passion and fire. She is always thinking of others and lets nothing stand in the way of protecting "her" kids. Damon is instantly drawn to her with a need to protect her. He knows she is his mate, but he refuses to claim her. I really enjoyed watching the other vampires try to force Damon to admit his feeling for Nicole by flirting with her. I had quite a few laughs at his expense.

I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book and eagerly await the next in the series.

What can I say? ♡(。-ω-) Love a good book with a good plot. I read some reviews before buying it. And yeah, maybe it should have been 4 stars for Nicole not giving Damon hell. I was checking audible first, and had to buy when noticed Jeffrey Kafer was the narrator. The man is a genius when it comes to female characters. And vamps... Kafer's caramel voice is surely to melt any hearts ♡ ~('▽^人)

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2015
I really enjoyed this book. The concept is compelling, and entertaining. There were already so many positive reviews, so I knew I had to give the author a chance. Being that this is my first time reading Teresa Gabelman, I found that I was deeply satisfied with the strength of her writing. Her characters are strong, inspiring, and each is very well rounded. Readers will find themselves riveted from the start from the innovative new approach she takes to depicting vampires. Gone are vampires that turn into bats with dark widow-peaks, capes, and instead, are hot, muscular, fighting vamps with purpose.

The story begins with Nicole Callahan, a social worker, and vampire advocate. Her job can get tricky—at best, but she is never one to shy away from helping other. As an advocate to the protection and justice of children, she fights to bring those who would harm and misuse them to justice. Many of her cases are delicate, bringing into very dangerous situations. No longer are social workers just helping human children, however, but vampire children too. Many of her cases have brought out the worst in humanity, and it is her job to expose those who seek to use vampire children for wrong reasons.

In Teresa’s story, the world knows vampires exist, and many have found a way to use their blood to get a fix. Crimson Rush has hit the streets, and Damon and his crew seek to find the person behind the craze. Their path finds them in association with Nicole’s boss. With their help, they will seek to find answers and eliminate the source.

Things take a drastic turn when an unexpected hit is put on Nicole’s life. Fearing for her safety, Damon takes the lead in protecting her, and finding who is behind everything. Nicole is less than thrilled to have her life suddenly at the mercy of others, and fights Damon and her boss every step of the way to continue working.

Undoubtedly, Nicole is Damon’s demise. From the moment he see her, he wants to protect her. Knowing their is a hit on her life only brings out the protective instincts more, and he will do everything in his power to protect her. When the heat erupts between him, he is unable to resist her.

From the start Nicole is drawn to Damon. He is tall, dark, and handsome, all the ingredients for a dangerous infatuation. Their relationship is complicated—at best—yet entirely entertaining. Seeking to scratch an itch, Damon falls for Nicole’s charm; however, he is totally unprepared for the intense need she brings out in him. Their love seems impossible, and Damon puts a good effort to stay sane, but ultimately Nicole is his undoing. Small play in the sheets is far from enough for Nicole, and she soon tells Damon that he either takes her as is, or he leaves.

The ending of this story was definitely predictable, yet satisfying. I felt just a little cheated that after Nicole wakes up I did not get to read the final deed—so to say. I wanted her new cravings to really shine, and she finally take Damon as we wanted to see. Of everything, that bothered me the most. What would it have hurt to just flesh out the ending? I’m sorry, I guess I’m a sucker for biting and sucking blood.

My other peeve with this book is that it needed to be longer. A good 5 more chapters could have really fleshed out a few things. I felt as if I did not know Damon and the other vampires very well. Where did they come from? How does their system work? Where do they live? Where were they before being known to humanity of their existence? etc…

In all, this book is an excellent introduction to a new series. Many other characters are brought up that will have books later, and I am excited to get started. Teresa’s books are not terribly long, and they can be read fairly quickly.

I doubt anyone will actually read this review, but I feel compelled to write it anyway. Damon is the reason I both love, and yet occasionally cringe at, indy titles. Damon is not a bad first effort. There is no "but". It's got great characters, strong enough to carry a fairly weak story line. So immediately we know this author's strength. That's a good thing, and the author works very well within her strength. And it isn't so much that the plot is bad, as it is maybe not very well thought out. I can see some pretty large potential holes for this series to fall into at some point. But the real problem - oi vey! The lack of editing. More about that later.

Very Brief Synopsis - There are Bad People/Vamps using children turned vamps for their blood. A group of social workers in Cincinnati get lessons in self protection from a group of good guy vamps, the VC Warriors, due to the social workers interacting with these child vamps whose blood is coveted, potentially putting them in danger. Damon is one of the Warriors. Nicole is one of the social workers. Nicole is targeted by the Bad People because she is uber-diligent about protecting her charges, and they want her out of the way so they can continue to sell the Crimson Rush, as it's known, with impunity.

What worked - I liked Damon. Fiercely protective, he wants Nicole from the moment he sees her, but due to an incident in his past, he won't commit to anyone. He is so hawt and so into Nicole. Watching him lose his cool whenever Nicole is in danger, or around another man, is hilarious.

Nicole is pretty great. A former foster child, she is dedicated to providing her charges with safe, secure homes. She borders on the too-perfect, but never quite crosses that line. She has abandonment issues, but still goes into every situation with her heart on her sleeve. She wants Damon as much as he wants her, but she isn't willing to settle for less from him. Nicole is fiercely loyal, and doesn't hesitate to jump into any situation. Not much gets her down, but when her stalker invades her personal space, she breaks down. My heart broke a bit for her.

Loved the other Warriors from the Vampire Council, and Nicole's friend, Pam. Again, characters are where this author shines.

What didn't work as well - The plot was uncomfortable, but not in the way you might expect. I *could not* get past the fact that these child vamps would remain children in size, if not in maturity. Kind of like the girl in LeStat, if any of you have read the granddaddy of this genre. Long after I probably should have been past that fact, I was still ruminating on the logistics of this particular situation. If they are adopted, or placed into foster care, they will outlive their adopters. What happens when they are 6 in appearance, but 30 in maturity? Will he be on his own? One of the vamp kids was in school, and it was mentioned he got along with the other kids. Will he stay in 1st grade perpetually? Will he progress normally? Ack! The whole idea was too much for me. I have to believe this idea would have worked as well with adult vamps, without the social worker aspect. I just don't think this is the detail I should still be considering after I finish the book.

While one part of the mystery was resolved, the overall arc is still there. The resolved part was pretty obvious. The Warrior guys did nothing to proactively solve the mystery. Rather, they waited for the threat to come to them. So they are hawt, yet inept?

I know this has been brought up, but it bears repeating - WTF with the editing? There are these little things called commas. So. Freaking. Useful. The line that really slayed me - Damon rubbed his eyes lying back on the bed. Uh...wha? His eyes are where? Let me demonstrate - Damon rubbed his eyes, lying back on the bed. See how helpful that little comma was? The author would be greatly served by a good copyeditor.

Bottom line - Overall, I enjoyed the story, primarily because of the characters. Yes, there are a few issues with the composition, and smaller issues with the plot, but I enjoyed Damon enough to purchase Jared's story.
