Hyundai and Kia Motors The Early Years and Product Development Kindle Edition

3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

Hyundai and Kia Motors: The Early Years and Product Development by Donald G Southerton provides deep insights into the rise of the Korean car industry.

From the 1960s to early 2000s, political and economic forces impacted the growth and development of the South Korean carmakers, including Hyundai and Kia Motors. In addition, the brands at times partnered for technology with Ford, Mazda, and Mitsubishi, along with world class designers like Giorgetto Giugiaro. Expanding rapidly the Korean brands soon looked to new international markets, including the U.S.

Despite the failure of Kia Motors to survive the IMF Crisis, the merger with Hyundai led to integrated technology research, development, and manufacturing-- not to mention the economies of scale needed for the Korean automaker to compete globally with industry heavyweights such as Toyota, Ford, GM, and VW.

Car models discussed including the Kia’s Brisa, Pride, Sephia, Sportage, and Rio along with Hyundai’s Pony, Excel and Santa Fe.

This is interesting to read, it is not one that you would pick up and not be able to put back down. The history of the early years of Hyundai and Kia the struggles to evolve into something that is exceptional to the end user.

I have always wanted to know the story of how Hyundai, Kia, and the other Korean automakers came about and I found it in this book..I was hoping for a little more dirt and insider info. kind of left feeling a little propaganda like.

Hyundai bought KIA a few years ago when KIA was not doing well. Now Hyundai and KIA are ran as completely different companies, yet share chassis and some parts..yet different and seperate designers, sales and engineering departments.

Now I understand the company culture and why they are the fastest growing Automobile company in the World! Since then, we bought 2 more KIA's..a Forte and a Sorento. My Daughter bought a new Sportage SUV last month. The rise in KIA's sales occured when KIA hired Peter Schreyer...who was the Designer for VW Audi...with some pretty impressive car designs under his belt...to design cars for KIA. KIA already had a good reputation for quality and reliability..but their cars were rathr plain looking. The transformation that occured at KIA with the looks and style of their cars...as well and the already great quality quickly grew KIA sales tremendousily.

Peter is now the President of KIA, as a reward for his dedication and hard work...and the growtn of KIA into a Globally recognised auto manufacturer. And as proof, our Soul and our Sportage were just named the best in initial quality in their class this month! Lowest number of initial issues/problems in their class.

KIA/Hyundai deserves the recognition, they earned it the hard way...by working hard to achieve it!

Having been past the impressive new KIA plant in West Point GA. It got me interested in how KIA started. Two years ago I purchased a KIA
that was manufactuered at the GA. Plant, It now has 55,000 miles on it. And all very troublefree. The book helped justify my purchase. I would have liked to see more detail about KIA' growth here in the States

I have owned 2 Kia Spectras and worked for a Kia dealership as a salesman. I like the information this ebook provides about the company I have chosen to produce the cars I intend to drive.

It's a short and informative book, there is not a lot of detail to it. I wouldn't pay too much for it if it's not free at the time like mine was.
