She (Ayesha) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 330 ratings

H. Rider Haggard’s classic tale of fantasy and adventure set in a lost world ruled by a two-thousand-year-old queen
On the occasion of his twenty-fifth birthday, Leo Vincey opens the locked iron box that is his birthright and finds an ancient potsherd. Following clues engraved on the relic, Vincey and the man who raised him, Cambridge professor Horace Holly, embark on a remarkable adventure that will take them from Victorian England to an uncharted region in East Africa. Surviving shipwreck, disease, and hostile natives, they discover a lost civilization no European has ever encountered—or lived to describe. They have entered the realm of the cruel and beautiful Ayesha, known to those who worship her as “
She-who-must-be-obeyed.” For two thousand years, the white queen has been waiting—for what, Vincey and Holly are about to find out.
One of the bestselling novels of all time,
She has held readers in its thrall for more than a century. Alongside Haggard’s other classic, King Solomon’s Mines, it established the conventions of the lost world fantasy genre, and has inspired some of our greatest thinkers and writers, from Sigmund Freud to J. R. R. Tolkien to Margaret Atwood.
This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

No page numbers....?
This version is practically unreadable. It has no page numbers and the font is incredibly small and closely spaced with GIGANTIC margins. All illustrations usually included are omitted. I've never had this issue with a book. Apparently Amazon is having a feud with the usual publishers so this is the only version Amazon offers. To get the one that doesn't look like it was created by a college TA with a copy machine go to Barnes and Noble.

The style of writing was probably popular when SHE was written but it was difficult for me. Pages without paragraphs get me every time. That said, it started out slow for me but built to an exciting climax. Would I read it again,no. Would I recommend it to others, yes!

This is not my first Haggard novel, but I didn't enjoy it as much as some of the others (like King Solomon's Mines). The beginning of the book is interesting, with the whole back story of the quest, but also got bogged down by providing pages and pages of Greek that modern readers can't read. To be honest, the first 30 percent of the book is pretty draggy. However, the adventure part of the story is what you expect from a Haggard novel - intrepid white men traveling into a place where none have been seen for much time. Ayesha (the "She" of the title) is interesting and sinister, but very what the author's time period would consider "feminine".

This Kindle version has no sketches (not sure if it is supposed to, but I see the mention in other formats) and is well-edited.

Eve Hoffman, was called "A Remarkable Woman" by her alma mater, Smith College. And indeed she is.
    In SHE we are
    blessed to share in her poetic memoir in which the verse sings and to my mind the topic is LOVE;
in all its forms. Children, mates, family, nature.
The real gift for me was the last poem "CODA.
    "Oh Lord
    of births and beheadings
(for if you are there, you must be God of both)"

That parenthetical has done it for me. Read SHE and see what it does for you.

When H. Rider Haggard wrote this novel in 1886, it was in the context of Europe's awakening to colonial possibilities on "the Dark Continent". Africa at the time was like an ink blot into which Haggard gazed and perceived manifold mysteries. Haggard's ink blot told him of a vanished, once mighty civilization, Kor, now much degraded. In this almost inaccessible region reigned She, an ageless woman who had lived over 2000 years. Never growing old, She awaited the return of her long-lost true love, Kallikrates. The original had tragically died, but his descendants passed on, from father to son, the legend of She. At last, one of the descendants, Leo, decides to embark on the perilous journey to Kor, in search of She. Accompanying Leo are his guardian, Ludwig Horace Holly, and a manservant, Job. An enchanting tale of true lovers re-uniting unfolds, though it does not end "happily ever after". I enjoyed She, however this edition of Haggard's novel is hampered by print which ought to be larger and a lack of illustrations. The tale deserves better treatment and hence this edition does not receive the full 5 stars.

I've read this before, when I was much younger. It's still a classic and is still timeless in it's appeal. Just remember, it was written a very long time ago, and things accepted back then are not so much now. I still love the story.

No, I was disappointed in the book. I got tired of it and stopped reading. I really regret loosing the ability to order books on my Kindle store. If I read about or was interested in an author I could type in the authors name and get a selection of their books to consider. Using the Kindle app on Amazon is annoying with selections limited to Amazons recommendations. I have started too many disappointing books on their suggestions.

The reader must take in to account that this book was written in a time when most of the western world had only heard about wild African beasts and villagers.. never seeing one...

Since this book was written 100 years before I was born, I forgive its outdated and very rigid social expectations of love, sexuality and moral social behaviour.

Taken as a story from its own context, it is an interesting inspection of the human condition and a well written story that sweeps you away into another world that only vaguely resembles real parts of Africa.
