Good Investigations: A David Good British Crime Mystery Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 491 ratings

She's blonde. She’s clever. She’s in his office. London based PI David Good doesn’t stand a chance.

South London. The 1980s. David Good, a morally confused and womanising private investigator, is hired by a ridiculously beautiful blonde to help her fend off the attentions of a serial blackmailer. But he's barely got to grips with the woman's keen sense of self-interest when he stumbles on to something far more unsavoury.

Never one to run a mile when a woman needs help, Good finds himself up to his neck in trouble, upsetting some unpleasant people with short fuses and their own self-interest to protect. This time his trade mark sense of humour might not be enough to see him safely out the other side, but the clock's ticking, so for once he ignores the obvious risk to his own carelessly maintained health and starts to unmask an illicit trade that's been causing a great deal of suffering.

Settle back, put up your feet and enjoy a romp across 1980s London with David Good, as he seeks to simultaneously unravel both the crime and the woman.

"Westerham’s writing is tight, smooth to read, carries great descriptions and all with a dry wit and wry humor." Amazon USA review of 'Good Girl Gone Bad'.

This book is part of the David Good, private investigator series, which can be read in any order you like.

Ben is the author of two crime and mystery series. The David Good private investigator stories are set in 1980s London, featuring a PI in tune with his neck of the woods and in possession of some distinctly pliable morals. The Banbury Cross Murder Mystery stories are classic murder mysteries set in the rural market town of Banbury during the early 1960s, featuring the curmudgeonly Inspector Leslie Dykeman and the irascible Sergeant Stanley Shapes.

Ben's writing places an emphasis on strongly developed characters and invariably comes served with a side-order of humour.

Born in London, Ben now lives in rural Northamptonshire in the English Midlands, with his family and a heavily over-worked computer.

He writes just about every day and some of the resulting stories and other material is made available for free exclusively to readers who register here http://www.benwesterham.com/subscribe/.

David isGood is the epitome of stereotypical detectives. That is not a criticism, but a fact. There are really two stories intertwined in this book. Overall, I found it an enjoyable read. The author warns, with justification, that there is a lot of slang in the dialogue. I thought I was rather familiar with English slang, but there were a few words that had me scratching my head. Most can be figured out in context. Enjoy!

Cute dialogue. The plot was ever expanding. David Good, a private investigator, has a group of interesting friends who helped him out in all kinds of interesting ways. My only problem was the heavy use of English collaqulisms sometimes made it hard to understand.

He builds the “David Good” character well. The interactions between characters are adequate. Too much detail in the detective’s dinning, grooming, and personal life. The plot was good, and I liked the stodgy chief inspector, but a lot of detail in describing David Goods motion from one place to the next could have been dispensed.
Still liked it because of the humor and it was close to what I like in this PI mystery genre.

I have already read several of the other books in the series and found them really good so I had to read the first. They are all great reads!

This is the first Ben Westerham book I have read and I have to say it won't be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed the way this story drew you in and kept you intrigued as to what was going to happen next. The story is told in the first person. The narrator, David Good, is a down on his luck private investigator based in Peckham, South London. The year is 1983. What starts out as an apparent blackmail investigation soon develops into something far more sinister and nasty. As the story unfolds we encounter a number of very different characters, some of whom are very unsavoury. Nobody appears to be entirely open, honest or trustworthy, including some of the 'good guys'.
While the story is set in 1980s South London its atmosphere reminds me in places of the 1930s and 1940s stories by Dashiell Hammett (involving Sam Spade) and Ramond Chandler (Philip Marlowe). I liked the cynical humour and 'observations' that Good wryly makes. I certainly felt I got to know the man even though I may not personally have agreed with some of his views or actions. Based on the descriptions I could certainly visualise the seedier areas of London he visits.
So, why do I give it four stars instead of five? I felt the ending, while more than satisfactory, left me wondering what actually happened to some of the people we had come across in the story. Perhaps this was intentional so they can re-appear in another book or story and if so, then this needed a little better signposting.
Overall however, I enjoyed the story, the atmosphere and the quality of the characterisation. I did not want to stop reading as I needed to find out how the story would end. I enjoyed the various twists and turns in the storyline and how the opening 'enquiry' turned into two different, but related, investigations. I will certainly look for another 'David Good' story to read.

Strong characters, witty dialogue, and a story line that encouraged me to keep turning pages. This was the first book I'd read by this author, and it won't be the last. He tells it like it is, makes no apologies, and it makes such a change from the sanitised world view much in evidence these days. Recommended.
