Emma's Blaze (Fires of Cricket Bend Book 2) Kindle Edition
The oldest and most responsible of the rowdy McKenzie brothers, Bill is in charge of their biggest task of the season. But while wrangling cattle, he crosses paths with a beautiful red-haired woman in a tattered dress in desperate need of help.
Is she as harmless as she is beautiful?
Suspicions arise when the red-haired beauty—who calls herself Sparrow—withholds the story of how she came to be in the woods. All Bill knows is she’s headed for Cricket Bend, where his brother was murdered a year earlier. Though he vowed to steer clear of that dusty town, he can’t let her run straight into bandit country with no protection. First, they have to make it through the cattle drive—and the mysterious woman is going with them.
Women are bad luck on the trail…
Though they’re strangers, the magic of the Wild West brings the pair together with a passion they can’t fight. But when her journal is stolen by Bill’s brother, Andrew, he discovers her true identity—and two scandalous secrets.
One thing Bill learns is the open range is full of possibilities. Neither of them imagined their paths would cross, but once they had, there was no turning back.
Is her tainted past enough to tear them apart? And if not, what will come of their blazing romance when that same past threatens their future?

- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2016Quickly bought this considering how much I loved installment one, Haven's Flame. Piper has really brought me to enjoy the Old West that she paints. This time she pulled us out of the small town of Cricket Bent to focus on a cattle drive. Short of enjoying City Slickers, this is never something I'd have been interested in. The McKenzie brothers quickly changed that. The ride alongside this little band was fun and full of banter. Piper manages to give each person in the little group a special glimmer of personality.
Told through alternating points of view by both Bill and Emma, the book manages to show both characters on their home turf and on completely foreign ground. Characters have hidden motives and misunderstandings are bound to happen. You have equal opportunities to love and hate the villains. The book clips right along, not in a headlong rush, but in a nice steady gate that keeps your interest but doesn't let you lose the little details Piper likes to sprinkle in. You get to catch up with a few of your favorites from Haven's Flame, but Piper describes the scenes with previous characters well enough that you could read Emma's Blaze without the first book. I still recommend picking up them both.
An enjoyable read for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2022Good read and romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2016Ms Piper's second installment in the Cricket Bend series whips up dust devils the size of East Texas as we follow heroine (?) Emma/Sparrow from damsel lost in the wilderness, to become a full on participant in the last cattle drive of the west, to her final showdown in hustlin' and bustlin' 1880s New Orleans. Will Emma finally be avenged? And will she slither her way out of the turmoil she is in? The highlights include a nerve-wrecking crossing of a ferocious stream, the cataclysm that is a stampede (an absolute devastating no-no for cattle herders), and a rather awkward scene between Emma and two of the women from the last book "Haven's Flame". Plot twists and gradual revelations of Emma's roller-coaster backstory add to the spice of "Emma's Blaze". It is adviced (and highly recommended!) to read "Haven's Flame" to fully understand the character developments, twists&turns, and larger plot arches that take place. Several direct references are made to events in the last book, so take my word for it: read "Haven's Flame"!
Just like the predecessor the story shifts perspective from protagonist Emma to protagonist Bill, giving you a treasured insight into both lover's mind. Ms. Pipper's skill at writing from a man's POV comes shining through again. The story unfolds effortlessly, the attention to detail is impressive (Ms. Piper's research on the cattle trails is profound), and, this being a Western romance novel, it never strays away too far from realism. Its respect for the harsh life lived in an harsh era is evident.
And the the lovemaking under the celestial dome of the prairie... *sigh*
Treat yourself to some quality Western pulp. And keep your eyes peeled for the third and last installment in the Cricket Bend series!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2016I never thought I could enjoy a book that took place largely on a cattle drive. Once again, look at me, I was wrong. (Ask my husband, I'm never wrong. So, shhhh, this will be our little secret, okay?)
The characters are great, and I absolutely love the ties to the first book in the series. Now I can't wait for the third one.
Bill's just the perfect mild-mannered boy that you could totally take home to meet mom, and Emma's a little hellcat who he stumbles across in the woods--but as it turns out, after that chance meeting, their lives will never be the same again. But they wouldn't want it any other way, despite the obstacles they have to endure as a result.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2016Sometimes there is nothing like a good ole fashion western, be it TV or a Book, Especially when it includes a delightful fun romantic tale inside the storyline . That is what you will get with Emma’s Blaze. This story reached out and grabbed me from the start when the hero of the book, Bill Mckenzie, finds a woman, Sparrow/Emma, alone and hurt in the woods. Being the Gentleman that he is, Bill agrees to help her get to where she is trying to go even though he knows she isn’t telling him the truth about much of anything and Emma has quite a tale to tell. Plus she needs to get the small town of Cricket Bend (the town that cost Bill’s youngest brother his life a year ago).
Bill, along with his father, four younger brothers and the other hired hands, are driving the cattle to market when he finds Emma. The guys on the trail welcome Emma with open arms (well everyone but Bill’s youngest brother, Andrew the screwup and Bill’s father, who believes women are bad luck on a cattle drive). It’s quite obvious Emma is a lady and not made for the range/rancher way of life, but Emma surprises them all by jumping right in and working from sunup to sundown to repay their kindness.
Bill is attracted to Emma unlike any woman he’s known in a long time but will Emma want to live a rancher's way of life with him? Can Bill forgive her when he finally hears her story? What happens when Bill and Emma get to Cricket Bend, does Emma find her answers? And what about Bill; does he find trouble or peace when he returns to Cricket Bend? This is a wonderful romance story set around life in the old Western Days and it’s just delightful.. This reader looks forward to reading book 3 in the series about the rowdy McKenzie brothers. I Highly recommend Emma’s Blaze!
