- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2017Wonderful plot, filled with twists and turns. Any book that can make me laugh out loud and also make me cry like a baby grants as many stars as I can give!
The story starts out with the age old, boy meets girl, boy and girl hate each other and work their way to love. Rawson returns home to his family's Montana ranch to find Liz who his father hired to train their horses, not only has she taken his job, she took over his bedroom!
Rawson's younger brother Bently likes Liz and quickly they become friends, because Liz treats him without pity, not seeing his handicaps from a previous bad car wreck.
Liz came to Montana from Vegas after losing her fiance on the day of their weeding to a car accident caused by an impaired driver running a red light.
Through trials and turns, Star War quotes and references to ice cream flavors and cereal, you never really knew what was going to happen next.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 20204 1/2 ⭐️ This is a really good story. I loved Liz, and Rawson grew on me. I connected with her and her lack of personal self-confidence, as well as her finding a man who won’t let her repeat the lies she believes about herself. Rawson’s growth as a man is impressive, although there are definitely snafus along the way for both of them.
The book is somewhat Christian in that morals, church, and God are important to Liz. However, if you’re used to reading Christian romance, be forewarned that this book contains a fair amount of cussing, both printed and implied. It was realistic for our world today, unfortunately. There are no f-words or using the Lord’s name in vain, though. Also, I marked 12 spelling/grammar/usage errors, but they were not glaring. Out of 379 pages, it wasn’t too bad. I wouldn’t let that warning deter you from reading it.
I hope to read more of this author, and I heartily recommend this book if you as the reader realize that it’s a raw, gritty story in many ways.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2016Between Hope & the Highway is a sweet story of young love, friendship, and forgiveness. Through an entertaining narrative set at a Montana horse ranch, we see the profound effect people can have on each other's lives. Most of the characters grow in some way while learning to forgive not only each other, but also themselves.
I enjoyed the different perspectives of Liz, Rawson, and Rawson's younger brother Bentley. Bentley silently hopes Rawson and Liz will end up together and that adds a nice dimension to the romance. This novel also shows the importance of teenage abstinence in a fun way. I enjoyed the Star Wars references and the humor sprinkled throughout the book. An enjoyable read intertwined with life lessons.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020This rating is mostly due to a very good writing style. I didn't catch any typos or mixed up names. I also very much enjoyed the last couple chapters. Those, sadly, were the only redeeming factors.
As some others said, I had a love/hate relationship with this book. I can't count how many times I wanted to put it down. And unlike other reviewers....I could not stand Liz!!!
***Potential spoilers***
Liz was NOT a Christian in any sense of the word. Okay, she went to church and was a virgin. She was THE most selfish, self centered, hateful brat I've ever read about! Yes, Rawson was egotistical, and very much a skirt chaser, but he had his reasons.
He was rich, he was a model, so very handsome and women were constantly throwing themselves at him. Also, his dad treated him badly for reasons I won't go into as I don't want to totally ruin anyone else reading the book. So, I gave him a break, although the first part of the book, I honestly didn't like him too much.
However, to his credit, he changed and tried to be a decent man for Miss Thing. Them, when Miss Attitude agreed to be Rawson's girl, she refused to let him kiss her? Yet, she had let her "friend" Mackay kiss her? She allows Rawson to kiss and practically make love to her neck, but won't let him kiss her on the mouth? She says she will be his girl, yet flirts with a handsome cowboy on her flight back from visiting her parents and then gets his number? Then, when said cowboy starts working with her she gushed about him to Rawson who supposedly her boyfriend? And also goes out with him??!UGH! She was very unkind to Rawson, who was trying his best to win her heart.
I could go on and on as to how much I could not stand Miss Hypocrite. I'm sorry, but she was not a Christian. Especially since she had so much disdain for Damon even though she knew Rawson was trying his best to help his friend heal. That's really showing the love of Christ to your unbelieving boyfriend there, chicky.
Her only redeeming value was how kind she was to Benny at the beginning. She befriended him when no one else would. That was about the extent of her kindness.
My favorite character was Benny. What a sweet kid he was. At the beginning, I wasn't sure why there were chapters titled with his name, but it soon became apparent, and I'm so glad.
Anyway, I rarely stop reading a book and usually only when there's too much sexual innuendos etc, but this time, it was due to the h. However, I just needed closure, so I plugged on.
Okay, rant over.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2016If you want a fast-paced, positive, sweet romance then this is the book for you. I immediately fell in love with characters, and the author's movement from one point of view to the next was seamless and easy to follow.
In a nutshell, it's a clean romance with layered and complicated characters. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll root for the hero.
In the bigger picture, you'll appreciate the overarching message of love, loss, and forgiveness. Amazing things happen when you forgive others...even more when you forgive yourself.
Easy 5 stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2018I really enjoyed how in depth this story goes into character development, motivation and emotions. Definitely not afraid to delve into deep topics like forgiveness, driving under the influence, death, injuries, blame, substance abuse, and much more. Along with this is romance, family relationships, physical intimacy vs. love, religion, and all rolled into a story that pulls you in and keeps you going until the end. Clean though swearing and sex are topics of discussion.
I will enjoy rereading this book.
