A new author horror writer, just too many authors and series. Happy reading and have fun 🌙😀
I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review. I'm a fan of horror (which I feel I rarely get to read), so I was peaked when I saw the genre, and looking through the titles my interest was peaked even more. Unfortunately, from that point on, my interest only dwindled.
I have to admit, when I see a mistake (forgetting a word/using the wrong word, capitalization) on the first page of a book, my expectations go down. But when there are two...? Or three! Wow! Then three more mistakes on the next page... That is definitely not a good sign. Okay, I'm a stickler for mistakes, but seeing ones that look so obvious to me ("Almost every weekday morning Betty went for a job before going t work."), I guess they just leave me baffled. How were they not spotted? I think the worst of the mistakes involved the lack of capitalization with the first word of a sentence. I found that mistake multiple times (even two sentences in a row!). Finding so many glaring mistakes in a writing that is so short...that's bad (as Mr. Mackey from Southpark would say)! I realized that the first and sixth stories have the most mistakes (the first one taking the lead, ha ha).
I think only certain people can write flash stories. Given they typically don't have much description because they're so short, the writer has to have something to keep the reader's attention by including some...wow factors of some kind. I'm not sure how to describe what I'm trying to say here. I felt the majority of the stories were unoriginal and meh. There was nothing to them. I'd get to the end and move on to the next like a robot. There was nothing that stood out in the stories (minus the first one) that really screamed scary or creepy. There was no build-up whatsoever. For example, "The Date," two guys go on a date, then they head back to one of their homes. And surprise (but not really a surprise), one of the guys is a vampire. There was just nothing there.
Again, I'm not a writer (only a reader and mistake finder), but I feel if you're going to write flash or even short stories, you have to be able to come up with your own/original ideas. Isn't that how you want to gain fans, to have them come to you because of your ideas, not of your writing based on another's idea. Maybe that's just me. When ideas are repeatedly written about, it's just boring to me. This, along with the many mistakes I found, that just screams laziness, in my opinion. Usually when I read short/flash stories, I want to know more about what happens after the story ends. But, minus the first story, I had no interest whatsoever.
Anyway...
The Handprint: 5/5
Minus the mistakes, this was an interesting story. I liked it. This seemed to be the only story that had meat or had the build-up that I was referring to above.
The Man on the Bench 3/5
This story made me think of scary stories I've read in the past, shows/movies I've seen involving a ghost befriending a live person. This was a cute story, but unoriginal.
The Pretend Friend 4/5
I liked this one. Nice and creepy.
The Project 1/5
This one definitely didn't feel like it had enough meat to it. This felt more like a rough draft.
Answering the Door 1/5
Similar to "The Project," this one also felt like there wasn't enough to the story. I get these are flash stories, but at the end of this one, I was thinking "ok"...
The Hungry Hiker 2/5
The way this story starts off, I was left with the impression that they hadn't been in the cave for very long. The fact the guy was so eager to kill his only companion seemed questionable. Plus there was nothing new about this idea. It's been done many times.
The Date 1/5
This one just screamed cheesy to me.
Taken 1/5
Again, another meh kind of story. Here was the rough draft. Add in the meat.

My only complaint was the typos which spoilt the book a little otherwise I would have given it five stars.
Well worth a read.
It seemed to me as if there were quite a few omissions which hurt the flow and overall quality of the writing. Some words are very noticeably missing or mis-spelled, certain letters aren't capitalised where they should be, and I found one or two words that had letters completely missing (such as 'to' being written as 't'). Mistakes like these come across as careless.
The author clearly enjoys writing in the horror genre and this comes across in the biographical elements. They should continue to write and work on their craft - their work has definite potential. For future publications, much more thorough proofreading is needed. I feel that this is the first step to furthering the quality of the writing.
