About the author

A native of Bayonne, NJ - the fabled birthplace of George R. R. Martin - Joseph Lallo is an unlikely entry into the world of literature. After a childhood spent daydreaming and reading, he fully intended to pursue a career in the tech sector. He received a Master's Degree in Computer Engineering from NJIT, and subsequently got a job working IT for a large healthcare corporation. Things changed when, in January 2010, his friends finally convinced him to publish the story that had accumulated over the course of a decade of spare time. That story, now known as the Book of Deacon Trilogy, was a surprise hit, and once he got a taste of the world of indie writing, he was hooked. Now he is a full-time author, and co-host of the Six Figure Authors Podcast.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2023I have read Joseph Lallo's books for the last year and have enjoyed every single series he's written. This particular series was slow to start for me but very comical and entertaining to read. I look forward to reading more of his work.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2019The character development was well thought out, but i feel that this book could have been longer. I've been reading Mr. Lallo since his 2nd Book of Deacon novel came out, and even had the chance to pre-read the first Big Sigma novel. He is an author of many talents as his stories vary greatly from futuristic sci-fi, to magic, steampunk, and now a present day Earth with a metaphysical twist.
Give this book a chance, and you'll enjoy it. If for some reason this isn't your cup of tea, check out Mr. Lallo's other works. You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020So I really really liked this new series by Joseph Lallo, both on its own merits and for what I think (personally) he brings to indie publishing.
A Traitor in the Shadows is his first foray into urban fantasy. His prior stuff is mostly in high fantasy, sci-fi, and steampunk. I personally think he's made this transition really well. I liked this debut novel/series. I can't wait to read more.
I like his concise language that vividly, yet efficiently conveys an idea. For example. We've all rushed off to work, just barely showering, cleaning up. But Lallo puts a cool spin on it:
"The quickest shower he could manage while still convincing himself he'd done his hygienic duty ..."
That makes you think...oh yeah, that's exactly what you do when you just do the bare minimum.
I also like that he has a protagonist that balances that line between being the good guy while having flaws WHILE at the same time, making a comment on the social justice of it all:
Alan's "shadow" tries to get through to him that even though he is good, that pure, blind goodness can also be a flaw when she says "Rules are no good when the people making them are making them specifically to stop people like you." (Social inequality anyone?) It also makes the character's inner conflict interesting by the shadow alien pointing out truths and the grays that modern life presents.
I also like it because he brings the same world-building creativity to this series. It doesn't just rehash the same fantasy stereotypes. It seems to me like it is very very original.
Which brings me to another point that kind of goes beyond this book and speaks to Mr. Lallo as an author. I've loved everything he has written because of its creativity. But also because of its bravery. As far as I know, Lallo was one of the first guys really putting out great stories in the earlier days of electronic self-publishing. He's been relentlessly at it ever since. In my own humble opinion, that by itself deserves some kudos. I think indie authors in part have benefited from him and a few others really sticking to it and making this sort of publishing popular.
Again, just my $0.02.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2019I rate books based on my feeling of satisfaction.
I wish I could say this was an epic story. However I think the main character started off weak, and ended only slightly less weak. The opening chapters almost made me stop reading. I didn't like the way the main character, Alan, constantly talked to himself. It felt like the author needed a narrator because he couldn't get the right flow to the story.
After that, things got better. I thoroughly enjoy the premise of this book. I look forward to seeing it progress. On the other hand, the setting seemed less than ideally detailed. I don't have a strong idea of the person Alan is, only his own thoughts on himself. I don't know how Alan feels about his surroundings.
I am ready to see of the next book in the series is better. There is promise. Definitely not a bad book; just more in the "average" category than I'd like it to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021The book felt thin. Good writing though, I feel as though I am the character or at least closely attached to the character. Getting to know Alan (Adam) typo near the end of book. Typo fits in well refers to no one being able to remember his name. Pretty neat. In my mind it adds another edge to the book. I do not feel this book to be lacking in page length. You got your points across well, sides are forming, the mystery and the story is developing nicely. Too bad you are so far away, it'd be nice to chat. Thank you for the story. Please keep writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2019Like everything else I've read from Lallo, his characters are well done and I'd like most of them for friends. When Alan's shadow is hijacked by an alien (Blot,) he gives her the benefit of the doubt - and totally puzzles the creature who is now his shadow. The fact that their continued existence depends on their mutual survival complicates things... I'm looking forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2019I wouldn't say it a compelling read but it was fun and took a societal view and built a fantastical presence around it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2022In a good way, learning about shadow activity and a photographer's problems while doging other more devious shadow shapes. A new rebellion caused by the invading horde.

Jos is a fine writer, so the book is well crafted.
The story was unexpected in a positive way.
Suffice it to say, I shall probably get the next chapter!

5.0 out of 5 stars New concept! Wow!
The workings of “shades” instead of shadows (I sooo want one haha) is clever and intriguing. My Lallo obsession continues unabated!!!
