Alice Braithward lived a long time. Sometimes, she felt like she was a dinosaur, or a living fossil of a time long gone. Other times, she felt just like a lonely grandmother missing her none existent grandchildren. Over her life, she had proven herself a successful businesswoman and had out survived many of her friends and most of her family. She did not put this down to chance or luck, but to willpower and hard work. But she also attributed her success to keeping her mind active and her keen interest in others’ lives that she experienced through vivid dreams.
Following a fall at home, Alice was confined to a nursing home. She occupied her time fascinated by the behaviour of others and loved people watching. She could think of nothing better than when someone challenged or engaged with her and revelled in strategic power plays. And every interaction was a game for Alice. With no in between, either she was going to win, or she was going to lose. And Alice B did not like to lose...
Although she loved the cut and thrust of the business world, she also had a dark side to her. She was overconfident to the point of arrogance, and she showed little or no empathy for others. She was ruthless and had no tolerance for excuses or indifference.
Related to her people watching fascination, she believed that her lucid dreams enabled her to enter and experience other’s lives. She saw herself as a watcher of others, of those not as fortunate as herself and of those who did not have her mind’s capacity.
Alice believed that losing cognitive function was not an inevitable course of aging. Alice believed that cognitive decline was not a disease but a biological process that people could influence and manage. Her vivid dreams and ability to remember the dream the following morning were an escape from her physical restrictions brought on by old age.
Alice considered the functional decline in neurotransmitter metabolism to be the root cause of lower brain activity detected as part of the healthy aging process. This reduction in cognitive function correlated with a slowing of brain wave frequency, and that low alpha power correlates with neurocognitive decline.
Alice firmly believed that through brainwave frequency entrainment, she could tap into emotions of others, and this was the enabler to her vivid dream patterns.

“The book is a series of seemingly unrelated stories that are drawn together with one common denominator: Alice, the 80 year old protagonist of the story. She is a pioneer of anti-aging research concerning the human mind, consciousness, and pushing the boundaries of conventional wisdom. She slowly gets drawn deeper into her own research and...I won’t spoil the rest. Suffice it to say this story and it’s concepts will likely stick with you long after you’ve finished the book. About the author

Derek is a graduate of University College Cork holding a Bachelor of Science in Bio-Chemical Engineering and a research Master's in Applied Psychology, providing an unusual combination of technical and neuroscience background that reflects in his written work. Derek's writing style is imaginative, mixing a science-based background with a dry sense of humour and imagination. His first two books, titled "Natural Frequency" and "Wildest Moments," originated from his studies in Applied Psychology and are a unique collection of short stories that emerged from working with disadvantaged teenagers and young adults who shared personal stories through fictitious characters. The stories in these first books focus on characters such as an Irish Witch representing the young adult, a Pigeon symbolizing the future, and a Frog embodying the regrets of the past. Each short story concludes with a moral message for the reader to interpret to their own life circumstances. The writing style is casual and comedic, blending fantasy, comedy and real life experiences. This book series was also published weekly on various social media platforms across Europe in different languages, developing almost a cult following among its readership base.
The third book, titled "Alice's Mind," is a subject direction change and a nod towards neuroscience. This novella reflects Derek's own personal experiences with aging parents who both suffered from age-related dementia and later succumbed to complications brought on by Alzheimer's disease.
Released in August 2024, Derek aptly titled the fourth book "Mind Keeper: Some Monsters are Real." This book is Derek's first novel and moves away from short story format to create a more mature reading. The subject is dark psychology and examines aspects of multiple personality disorder in a female character called Letty Stark. Rich in neuroscience, the story weaves through the three personalities of the one person, the voices in her mind representing anger, emotions, and rationality. Each personality struggling for dominance in the same mind.
Derek is from Waterford, Ireland and is a parent to 3 adult children. He still works in the Pharmaceutical area and also actively interested in the psychology of human behaviour.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2024*Alice's Mind* by Derek Finn is a captivating exploration of the intersection between reality, technology, and identity. Finn masterfully weaves a psychological thriller that dives deep into the mind of Alice, a protagonist grappling with memories that may not be her own and a world where the line between human consciousness and artificial intelligence blurs. The novel’s intricate plot keeps readers on edge, challenging them to question what is real as they follow Alice through a maze of secrets and unexpected twists. Finn’s prose is sharp and thought-provoking, immersing readers in a chilling yet mesmerizing future where technology holds both salvation and danger. Perfect for fans of *Black Mirror* and Philip K. Dick, *Alice's Mind* is a must-read for those who enjoy a gripping, intelligent story that lingers long after the final page.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2025This book? It’s like stepping into a dream you’re not sure you wanna wake up from. Alice is a fascinating protagonist—sharp, ruthless, and absolutely convinced she can manipulate the world through sheer brainpower. The blend of psychological theory and fiction makes for an eerie, thought-provoking ride, though at times, the pacing gets lost in its own complexity. If you’re into stories that blur the line between reality and imagination, this one will definitely stick with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read
An interesting and entertaining read, it gripped me. I am an avid reader, so normally, I would give this a three and a half stars, however, what the author has overcome to achieve writing this book, infinite stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painful read, very poorly written
Full of grammatical errors; spelling mistakes, ‘your’ instead of ‘you’re’, and words missing that mean sentences don’t make sense.
Although the concept is good, the execution lets it down. There is no flow to the writing, making it difficult to understand who was saying what, and what relevance there was to the story at times.
This looks and reads like a poor self publication. I wish I’d read the reviews before ordering. I’d be ashamed to put my name to this. Sorry Derek, but if you’re going to sell your work, at least make sure it has been proofread!
I never give up on a book, but I’m sad to say this one has gone to the charity shop unfinished.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept, badly written
Although the concept of this book is a fascinating one, the author obviously had not employed a proof reader prior to publication since grammar and spelling were both poor. I was pleased it was only a short text as the writing was basic and not fluent to read.
