To Catch an Heiress (Agents of the Crown Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 4,515 ratings

When Caroline Trent is kidnapped by Blake Ravenscroft, she doesn't even try to elude this dangerously handsome agent of the crown. After all, she's been running from unwanted marriage proposals. Yes, Blake believes she's a notorious spy named Carlotta De Leon, but for six weeks until her twenty-first birthday, when she'll gain control of her fortune, hiding out in the titillating company of a mysterious captor is awfully convenient -- and maybe just a little romantic, too.

Blake Ravenscroft's mission is to bring "Carlotta" to justice, not to fall in love. His heart has been hardened by years of intrigue, but this little temptress proves oddly disarming and thoroughly kissable. And suddenly the unthinkable becomes possible -- that this mismatched Couple might be destined for love.

Amazon.com Review

Caroline Trent is fed up with her greedy guardian, Oliver Prewitt, and his nitwit son, Percy. With only six weeks to go until she can claim her inheritance and rid herself of them, Percy attempts to forcibly seduce her. Fortunately, Caroline has a pistol at hand and she uses it--wounding the annoying man just enough to allow her to escape. Fuming, she flees the dark manor house determined to find employment and hide from her guardian for six weeks. But a bad night turns worse when a tall, dark stranger accosts her. Blake Ravenscroft thinks Caroline is a female spy, part of Oliver Prewitt's smuggling activities that include spying for Napoleon. He kidnaps Caroline, ties her to a bed at his nearby home, and grills her unsuccessfully before a friend arrives and tells Blake that he's captured the wrong woman. Caroline explains her predicament and, given what he knows of the larcenous Oliver Prewitt, Blake has no option but to offer her shelter. Caroline isn't a woman accustomed to sitting in the parlor sipping tea, especially while Blake's investigation has him involved in far more exciting, life-threatening activities. Blake isn't a man accustomed to having a woman ignore his commands. Sparks fly and passion sizzles between these two characters while a cast of endearing characters provide well-meaning assistance. To Catch an Heiress is both warm and wonderful, with witty dialogue and endearing characters. --Lois Faye Dyer

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and in 2001 she did so in grand fashion, appearing on the game show The Weakest Link and walking away with the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code. Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America's Hall of Fame, her books have been translated into 29 languages, and she currently lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

Overall I enjoyed the story, but there were times when I struggled to continue reading. At times, the conversations between Caroline and Blake were annoying and repetitive, sometimes childish. I skimmed through those parts just to get through the scenes. This was mainly in the middle. The beginning was great and it’s what enticed me to purchase the book, but then the middle was what I just described. The book picked up at the end though.

From the beginning I was laughing out loud. 😂 Quinn created likable, hilarious interactions between instantly loved characters. Her detailed development of character even bled over into the house help. If you like period romance with humor dabbled in throughout, this is the book for you. I could not put it down.

Caroline Trent, a British heiress has been living with a series of guardians, one worse than the next. In the opening chapter she is running away from her last guardian, a traitor named Oliver Prewitt, who coerced his son into marrying her by ordering his son Percy to sexually assault her, orchestrating a pretext for marriage, so Oliver could get his hands on her inheritance. Near rape, kidnapping, sprained ankles, mistaken identity, and a runaway who falls for a spy aside, the characters just didn't bring the plot to life. Fortunately, it was a quick read. Although I enjoy Julia Quinn, this one fell short of spectacular. The characters just didn't zing, they zagged and whined, arguing like teenagers.

Despite the levity, the hallmarks of a Quinn novel, the plot appeared predicable from the beginning. Mistaking Caroline for treacherous Spanish spy, Carlotta De Leon, intrigued me immediately, but her character was flat. Our sassy heroine finds herself being held at Seacrest Manor by the bellowing, morose Blake Ravenscroft, who feels responsible for the death of his fiancé, fellow spy, Marabelle. The best characters were the servants who took to her hideaway story without much regard for our hero's wishes, giving me a good chuckle or two. The pace of the story dragged more than other Quinn storylines.

The romantic escapade was filled with action and adventure, typical of most Quinn’s books. Blake’s lingering guilt and the lovers’ juvenile dialogue left me wanting. I saw more of a dashing hero in Blake’s fellow spy friend, James, the Marque of Riverdale, whose story is told in the next installment of the series. Overall, not one of Quinn's better stories. I never felt a connection to the main characters as they meandered through a series of plot twists that labored to find purchase.

If you are a bridgerton/Julia Quinn fan you need this book. It is whimsical, romantic and sexy.

Loved this story of mystery and spy blended into the world of Quinn. Only I usually add an audio companion to help with my obsessive reading so I can stay engaged with the story during trips in the car or chores around the house. It baffles me that book 2 has audio but this does not. Needless to say I had to read the entire book in a day getting very little else accomplished... lol

After picking up  What Happens in London , at a used bookstore and falling in love with Julia Quinn's style, I decided that I had to start adding more of her stuff to my romance shelf. I decided on this one, because I love spy fiction as much as I love banter, and this seemed like it could be an amazing combination of the two.

In the end, though, the spy hero is kind of the weak link in the book, at least for me. I liked him at first, when he found himself laughing with the heroine despite thinking she's an enemy spy, but when that misconception's cleared up, he seems to lose a lot of his sense of humor, and he's always growling at the heroine because MY FIANCEE DIED, NOW I MUST SMOTHER YOU IN MY PROTECTIVE INSTINCTS. That is, when he's not just plain angsting about Dead Fiancee and how he Must Never Love a Woman Again. This doesn't seem to have annoyed some readers, judging from the reviews, but to me, he was such a prickly drag by the end of the book that I couldn't see why the heroine thought he was so great- I'd have been ready to elope with the Marquis.

Also, Dead Fiancee's name is Marabelle, This didn't strike me as a particularly realistic name for the period, so whenever she'd get mentioned, I'd roll my eyes. My eyes got a lot of exercise by the time the epilogue rolled around.

I loved pretty much everything else- the side characters are fun and don't feel flat, I loved Caroline's dictionary/diary and quick wit, etc., so I'd still rank this book pretty highly and recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind angsty love interests. Personally, though, I'm looking forward to passing this one on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing storyline
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2023
This was a great read, the storyline was brilliantly put together, very different from other books typical plots. You were always kept on your toes with new revelations and events occurring. However I still didn’t quite understand the relation between the marquis and the criminal, however it wasn’t about him!

The first part of the book was brilliant, I was so antsy with the anticipation for the truth to come out thinking “oh my god how long is this going to go on!” So it really kept me on edge waiting for the pin to drop. My heart bled when broken hearts were healed and a loving relationship was developed. Both characters have such strong development throughout the story and I loved the HEA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun less mature work from a terrific author
Reviewed in Australia on February 17, 2019
I enjoy reading Julia Quinn's books, and this light-hearted early novel shows how far she has come as an author. This is a tale of an heiress who escapes her evil guardian and finds herself being protected by spies of the crown. A romance begins to blossom between the heiress Caroline and her captor Blake.

Most of the fun in this book comes from the personality of Caroline. She is a hyperactive and funny, driving her captor into fits of rage. And there is pathos as well - Caroline has led such a grim life that she enjoys the company of her captors. Blake has his own sad story as he mourns the loss of his fiancée.

Compared to this author’s more recent books, the plot is less mature and the characters less developed. Even so this is still an excellent read.
