Ammie, Come Home (Georgetown trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
It begins as a lark -- a harmless diversion initiated by Washington, D.C., hostess Ruth Bennett as a means of entertaining her visiting niece, Sara. But the séance conducted in Ruth's elegant Georgetown home calls something back; something unwelcome ... and palpably evil. Suddenly Sara is speaking in a voice not her own, transformed into a miserable, whimpering creature so unlike her normal, sensible self. No tricks or talismans will dispel the malevolence that now plagues the inhabitants of this haunted place -- until a dark history of treachery, lust, and violence is exposed. But the cost might well be the sanity and the lives of the living.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2023A great read. Couldn't put it down.
The characters are so well written i felt I knew them & the story itself is intense in mystery, ghost story, romance & history! A real gem from this very good Author, a favorite of mine.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2013Like so many reviewers here, I first read this book as a Reader's Digest Condensed Book. As soon as I finished, my sister and I began reading it out loud to each other. To all who are familiar with the story, I think you'll understand that we both screamed and lost it when our father came up to bed (stairs creaking all the way) in the middle of the "staircase scene". Funny, but spine-tingling too. Over the many intervening years, I've read lots of Barbara Michaels books (and her scholarly works as well), and to me, this is still the best of them. She hit every note just right here - the quietly privileged life led by Ruth Bennet, the idealistic (and self-congratulatory) outlooks of Sara and Bruce, the down-to-earth-with-just-a-bit-of-lechery of Pat - all of these characters, and the utterly normal upper-class atmosphere of a townhouse in Georgetown - all of this combines to lull the reader into a sense of security, which Ms. Michaels then proceeds to strip away layer by layer. I'm not much of a fan of "supernatural" books, and I think that part of the reason is that this may well have been the first one I ever read; it spoiled me for much of the rest. There are no spooky castles here, no secret rooms, no misty moors, just a lovely modern home with something terrible going on. Funny, writing that sentence made me realize that I could be describing "The Exorcist" (coincidentally, also set in Georgetown - and one of the actors appeared in both movies!). But "The Exorcist", at least the film version (I don't believe I've ever read the book) relies mainly on shock value for its scares - "Ammie, Come Home" gets under your skin quietly, inexorably - and you'll be leaving the light on.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2022A good story but a little old fashioned in context and character attitudes. A mystery/Romans that is still well worth reading.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017I first read this as part of a Reader's Digest Condensed Book while still in elementary school. I was curious about my mom's books and snuck this one off the shelf off to my room. Thus began multi year reading frenzy, gobbling the gothics she collected. I loved them.
I eventually collected my own copies of all of Barbara Michaels aka Elizabeth Peters books. I love them still. Her ability to be unpredictable enchanted me. I never knew if I was getting something paranormal or a more traditional mystery. Authors who can slip genre norms are rare beasts and must be cherished.
My mother gave me a lifetime gift when she brought books into my world. In keeping with her mandate I have been known to award a random child a book in passing... a golden ticket to a life-long adventure. And then I take the opportunity to revisit such old dear friends that have been brought to mind.
Give Ammie Come Home a try. It is worth reading. Remember it was first published in 1968 and forgive any dated tones... you will be glad you did. I am off to enjoy a glass of sherry and then open volume 2 in the Georgetown series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2023I have read this book so many times over the years, and I still get goosebumps reading it. It's a bit dated now , but it's so easy to get into the mind set of the story that it doesn't seem relevant. Barbara Michaels is and always has been one of my favorite authors. She knew how to tap into her readers' feelings, no matter the genre she employed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2013Oh, how I will miss the writings of Barbara Michaels and Elizabeth Peters!
Ammie, Come Home is a fun story that will give you a few shivers. It was published in 1968 and that is part of its charm; it's now an old novel about an older time that is about an even older time!
If you are a fan of the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters (aka Barbara Michaels), you may enjoy reading this novel as a prototype of what were to become the Emerson clan. See if you can note the many budding characteristics: Ruth Bennett as Amelia Peabody; Professor Pat MacDougal as Professor Radcliff Emerson; Sara as Nefret; and Bruce as Ramses.
The story brings you into the circle of characters in the manner of a good book - enjoyment of their world and a reluctance to see it come to an end.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2023A great story, and its a good movie too. Love this author. Highly recommend to ghost story readers. I enjoy a good scare, but no blood and gore.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice comfortable read when all you want is a blankie
This one is a mystery ghost story written in the cozy genre and it's just that. A nice comfortable read when all you want is a blankie, your warm cuppa tea or gin, and some peace and quiet. It's a classic for many and rightly so.
