Defiant Heart (Westward Hearts) Kindle Edition
In Book One of the Westward Hearts series, orphans Fannie Caldwell and her two young siblings have spent the last three years as indentured servants under a cruel master. Desperately wanting a better life for her brother and sister, Fannie devises a plan to secretly join a wagon train heading west. Her plan immediately runs into trouble when the handsome yet bullheaded wagon master Blake Tanner refuses to allow an unmarried woman on the train. But Fannie's determined—she'll escape and go west with or without help.
As life on the trail tests everyone's endurance and faith, Fannie soon realizes the perils of being a single woman on the frontier. Witnessing Fannie fending off one scare after another, Blake slowly recognizes how much he cares for this alluring young woman. Will Blake sacrifice his own dreams and guide Fannie to safety? Or will Fannie's stubborn independence keep her from finding true love?

- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2012I like to read stories about folks on a wagon train where more often than not the trail master is the lead male character and the lead female is one of the single travelers. This was the case.
Blake has a rule.. 'no single women allowed' but Fannie has her own rule, 'I will follow along anyway'. Fannie's choices were limited, she and her two younger twin siblings were staying with a cruel and obnoxious man who many times hit Fannie for whatever reason, especially when he had been drinking. Blake meets Fannie when his wagon train stops in her town to get supplies.
Fannie ends up joining up with the wagon train with the twins and an aquaintance who is also desperate to get from under her 'protector' (and I use that word sarcastically). BTW, I'm not giving too much information away here as this happens early on and you can read some of it on the back of the book. Troubles occur throughout the journey and Blake protects Fannie and family throughout.
Although at times they were both very stubborn and were caustic to each other, it wasn't so much that it made me grind my teeth which usually happens with other books. :)
I loved it and look forward to reading book two of this series, which I believe is Toni and Sam's story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2015I enjoyed this book., even tho I knew how it would probably end. The sexual content was just suggestive in that you knew that one of the women had been forced into prostitution and the other young woman had been used that way by her stepfather. Nothing was WRITTEN...you just knew it. The violence was a little more out there....an evil man beating a young woman, and kidnapping...however, alls well that ends well so they say.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2012Really enjoyed this book. It had a great story line and it wasn't one of those books that makes you so nervous you want to chew your nails before its finished. For me, I'm glad to be reading the book / series years after it was released; otherwise, I might have been slightly upset with the ending. Not because it wasn't a happy ending. It was for Blake and Fannie - happy, but not complete / finished - but left us wondering about Toni and some of the others. Lucky for me I also have the remaining two books in the series. Looking forward to seeing how energy thing turns out.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2007This would have been a great book, if it hadn't dealt so much with prostitution and beatings. I kept thinking it would end, but it lasted through the whole book and into the preview of Book 2 in the back.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2011Did not know this was a series. Bought first book, then realized it was a series. Bought all books in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed these books. Good reading interspered with tension, love, friendship.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2015You will fall in love with the characters!!! I was sad to finish the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2015This is just one of those books that you pick up and start reading and the next thing you know is that it's the end of the book! Loved this storyline, finished in a couple of hours and I have started on the second book in this series, like this author's books.
