4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 926 ratings

An archeologist in coastal Maine makes a chilling discovery in this cozy mystery series debut—now a Hallmark feature film!

Brilliant, dedicated, and driven, archaeologist Emma Fielding is an expert at finding things that have been lost for centuries. A soon-to-be-tenured professor, she recently unearthed a major archeological discovery in coastal Maine: a seventeenth-century settlement that predates Jamestown. But a dead body found at the site has embroiled Emma and her students in a different kind of investigation.

As a disgruntled rival puts Emma’s reputation in jeopardy, a second suspicious death hits heartbreakingly close to home. Now Emma is determined to bring a killer to light. But that means digging into some dark secrets buried deep within the archaeological community—a tricky business that could wind up burying her.

I love mysteries and I love smart women so this book by Dana Cameron was definitely my cup of tea. Cameron's characters are crafted so precisely that by the middle of the book you feel like they are old friends and trusted colleagues. When things go awry you can't help but get involved on a personal level. Emma Fielding isn't that worn out female hero who can go from professor's closet office to superwoman karate star in the flick of a page. She is as real as any woman you might know. She is vulnerable and uncertain at times. She makes snap decisions she later regrets but she has incredible insight into the people she deals with at her school and on her archaeological dig. You never doubt that she could be a real person. You might even wonder if she isn't a lot like yourself. An extra added bonus is that this book is smart and you will learn something along the way. I loved this story and I am eager to see the dramatization and to get into the next book in the series. Finding this series-- which I hope goes beyond the current six books, was a delightful gift. I should note that I stayed up one night until 2:30 a.m. because I couldn't put it down. Consider that before you pick it up for a casual few minutes of reading.

I wanted to give 4.5 stars as I really enjoyed this first book in Cameron's series. Not quite five-star enjoyment, but better than four. I loved the archaeology pieces as much as the murder plot line. Just enough archaeology info and techniques to be informative without taking away from the novel. I agree with another reviewer that I had it figured out pretty early on as the list of suspects was pretty short, but I enjoyed the WHY of it, which wasn't so obvious. I liked the way the ending kept the plot line open for possible future use. Nicely done. I am eager to read more in the series and to see how Emma develops. The peeks into Emma, her past, and her relationships open opportunities for exploitation and exploration in future books.

As an avocational archaeologist, Dana Cameron's writing is a dream come true for me. No silliness in story line, no ridiculous romance, just a damn good and well-written yarn with totally believable characters. I look forward to reading the series in its entirety. Hallmark Movies and Mysteries is a secret vice and viewing Emma in that genre nearly had me forego the print originals. That would have been a big mistake. Take note, Hallmark/Crown: there is no need to doctor up these stories. They are interesting and adventuresome as they stand!

It is actually a very good book. But the penultimate scene was over the top violet for me? Of course, I'm a wuss and rather intolerant of violence.

I’ve watched the shows on Hallmark but this is so much better. The author does an amazing job of getting into Emma Fielding’s head and making her passion for archeology and the subject come alive. Planning to continue the series now. Really worth reading.

This book is a great mystery. It has an archaeological theme. The main character is Dr. Emma Feilding, an archaeologist, professor, and amateur detective, and pretty realistic and interesting character. She's married, she's smart, and has a job she loves Doin ( and she's very good at it). The mystery happens to start when Emma is out walking on the beach, and discovers the body of a friend, Auggie Brooks. Afterwards certain other events unravel around the site she is excavating, to say the least this is a very riveting, fast paced mystery. It has great realistic characters, and a vivid, detailed setting.

Unusual concept a mystery series set in a university and around archeological digs. Gets slow in a few places but the heroine is engaging. And the plot twists and turns. It's a good read.
