True Confessions Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 346 ratings

“I must confess—WOW!” exclaims Jayne Ann Krentz on this hilarious romance from the New York Times–bestselling author of See Jane Score.

Welcome to Gospel, Idaho, where everyone knows that there are two universal truths. First, God did His best work when He created the Sawtooth Wilderness Area. Second, every sin known to heaven and earth—from the hole in the ozone to alien abductions—is all California’s fault.

This is the story of what happened when a Californian came to visit . . .

Hope Spencer knows wacky: as a writer for The Weekly News of the Universe she’s “spotted” Bigfoot, Elvis, and the face of Jesus on a tortilla. Arriving in Gospel hoping for some peace and quiet and normal . . . she quickly figures out that there’s nothing normal going on in Gospel. From the Barnes sisters with their color-coordinated hair, to the toilet-tossing sportsmen . . . to the murder victim whose body had been found in her house years before, the Gospel truth really is stranger than fiction—even tabloid fiction. Hell, she should have stayed in L.A.

And then there’s local sheriff Dylan Taber. He’s no made-up character from one of her stories. She could never create anything that good. Dylan’s all too real . . . and soon Hope is forced to face the awful truth—she’s been too long without a man. But once she gets wind of a Hollywood actress somehow mixed up in Dylan’s life, Hope realizes that if they are to have any chance together, he has some true confessing to do.

“[A] frisky, fun read.” —Publishers Weekly

Amazon.com Review

Sheriff Dylan Taber takes one look at city girl Hope Spencer and bets she won't last a week in Gospel, Idaho. But Ray Bans, tiny spandex tops, and a silver Porsche are not the sum total of a woman, and Hope not only stays more than a week, she makes an indelible impression on the local population while she's driving Dylan crazy with lust and longing. Not that she plans to make the sheriff crazy. Hope just wants to end the writer's block that has plagued her for months so she can return to being a star reporter for an L.A. tabloid.

Fortunately for her, the residents of Gospel provide inspiration for her fertile imagination and she's soon cranking out new stories that her publisher loves. Meanwhile, she's making new friends and falling in love--with the Sawtooth Mountains, with small-town life, and with Dylan Taber. Dylan is keeping a secret, however, and when he finds out that Hope isn't just a writer of nonfiction, but a member of the notorious tabloid paparazzi, all hell breaks loose in Gospel. Can Hope convince him that her actions were innocent and will Dylan ever believe her?

From the waitress in the Cozy Corner Cafe to the patrons of the Buckhorn Bar, from the neighbor next door with big hair to seven-year-old boys and their endearing shenanigans, Gibson nails small-town life to perfection. True Confessions is sexy, funny, well-plotted, and a darn good novel. Don't miss this latest offering from one of the rising stars of romantic comedy. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly

When California tabloid reporter Hope Spencer roars into the mountain town of Gospel, Idaho, in her silver Porsche, turquoise Tony Lamas and ultra-tight, "seal-a-meal" jeans, Sheriff Dylan Taber knows that her presence will create quite a stir among the locals. The sassy blonde has awakened some familiar urges in Dylan himself, but as single father and lawman trying to live down his wild past he knows that he can't put his reputation on the line for a fling with a flatlander. Hope has plans of her own for her six-month "working vacation" and they don't include romance. Still recovering from a disastrous marriage, Hope has come to Gospel to heal and to spin a few alien-adventure articles for her editor. She's unprepared for the gossip-loving, toilet-tossing locals, however, and she soon finds herself making friends among them and falling in love with the town sheriff. The only problem is that Hope has yet to tell Dylan what she does for a living, and Dylan seems to be keeping certain details about his past from her as well. Gibson's (It Must Be Love, etc.) characters are quirky and endearing and her clever, snappy dialogue amuses at every turn of the page. With each novel, Gibson's storytelling seems to improve, and this sweetly sexy romance is evidence of her now-considerable skill. (On-sale: July 31)Forecast: A fresh, sweetly suggestive cover and generous advance praise from Jayne Ann Krentz, Elizabeth Lowell and Karen Robards will ensure that this frisky, fun read will sell to its 350,000 first printing.

Autumn Sommers is not a fan of dreams. When your dreams have the power to foretell tragedy and you don't know why and when they will choose to show up it is not pleasant. It has been twelve years since the last time her dreams scared her. Now she is dreaming about a girl who needs her help. She needs to help her - no one else can.

Ben McKenzie has lived every parent's nightmare, the loss and death of a child. Now Autumn is telling him his beloved Molly is not dead only stolen and Autumn needs his help to find his daughter. Can he survive the heartache of going through the search again or will it tear him apart? Does he dare give up the shred of hope?

Convincing Ben that she is not out to hurt him or his family, or to gain financially from their tragedy, is not going to be easy. But Autumn can't give up. Molly needs her help and no one else can help her.

The Summit is an intense, gripping novel. I found myself being rung through a gamut of emotions. The pain that Ben feels is not treated lightly but is shown in a tactful and intense manner. Autumn is just the right amount of uncertain in what she dreams, but at the same time certain that she needs to try and help Molly. Rachel Gibson has written a book that draws on the reader's emotions. A novel well worth reading.

Dylan and Hope. True love. That's what a romance novel should be.

Dylan is such a complete hunk. It is worth reading just to read about such a guy. Hope is sensitive yet strong. She's the type of gal Dylan probably doesn't want to like or love, but they are drawn to each other at once. That's really nice; and let's be honest, this does really happen, maybe in one of my previous lives, but I have felt it.

It is a typical plot, but one that I just love. Boy meets girl, attraction is electric, boy wounds girl and/or girl wounds guy, love overcomes all obstacles in the end.

I like that there were no stupid murders injected into the story. A good love story does not need this, and I do not like murders etc. injected into a romance novel just to meet some sort of romance/suspense genre.

I like a good love story with some pain and sorrow, and ultimately with the love of a man for a woman and a woman for a man overcoming all obstacles. This fits that very well.

Why not 5 stars? Well, Hope having a hysterectomy at 21, while not tragic, was too real. And let's face it, who reads romance novels to find reality? Not I. I read them to find what I can no longer find in real life.

In the world of contemporary romance novels, all small town sheriffs are single, handsome, buff, tall and incredibly sexy. Dylan Taber, the hero of Rachel Gibson's "True Confessions," fits the mold perfectly. If only these guys existed in real life. Unfortunately, that might spawn a massive crime wave among the women of America. Not only does Gibson give us wonderful heros, but she also creates some of the most unique, realistic and relatable heroines in romance novels. Hope Spencer is no exception. These two meet in Dylan's hometown of Gospel, Idaho. Hope is a city girl who's moved to town for the summer, and she finds its much more remote than she was expecting. She's constantly surprised by the vagarities of the local populace - old ladies with purple hair, toilet tossing contests and Rocky Mountain oysters, to name a few - and they make wonderful fodder for her secret work as a tabloid writer. Sheriff Taber is a reformed hell-raiser raising his young son with some secrets of his own. Thanks to his new position of responsibility in the community and the twisted reputation of his predecessor, he's been living like a monk even though all the single women in town are after him. Once he lays eyes on Hope, that becomes a whole lot harder. Gibson has created two wonderful characters, and both the dialogue and the plot are funny and charming. A great recipe for a contemporary romance!

I really am enjoying indulging in Rachel Gibson's books, they are such a hoot. The main female character is messed up, sassy, different, independent and just full of surprises. This book had me laughing out load with journalistic articles and daft situations. The male character appropriately tormented and handsome held interest but frustrated me a little, I wanted him to be more decisive. Nevertheless the twists, plots, jokes and soooo sexy intimate scenes are brilliant. Another great read, could not put it down.
