“I wouldn’t miss a Kim Harrison book for anything.”
—Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels

A spellbinding story set once again Cleveland’s vampire, demon, and other supernatural beings-infested Hollows, Black Magic Sanction has the intrepid Rachel trapped in a life-or-death battle against her own kind in a sensational urban fantasy that shows why Kim Harrison deservedly stands in the superstar ranks alongside Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, and Laurell K. From the Back Cover
In New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison's most complex and nuanced adventure yet, bounty hunter and witch Rachel Morgan fights a deadly battle—mind, body, and soul
Black Magic Sanction
Rachel Morgan has fought and hunted vampires, werewolves, banshees, demons, and other supernatural dangers as both witch and bounty hunter—and lived to tell the tale. But she's never faced off against her own kind . . . until now. Denounced and shunned for dealing with demons and black magic, her best hope is life imprisonment—at worst, a forced lobotomy and genetic slavery. Only her enemies are strong enough to help her win her freedom, but trust comes hard when it hinges on the unscrupulous tycoon Trent Kalamack, the demon Algaliarept, and an ex-boyfriend turned thief.
It takes a witch to catch a witch, but survival bears a heavy price.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2013Black Magic Sanction is yet another wild ride for Rachel and her friends, and it sure is for the readers as well! It’s impossible not to feel for Rachel in this installment, because so many things happen to her, and she just can’t catch a break. And there are some tough things she needs to come to term with. Both when it comes to herself and the society of witches known as the coven.
My review of Black Magic Sanction is pretty much spoiler free, but there are spoilers from prior books, it’s impossible to review the 8th book in a series without talking about some of the things that have happened before, especially in a series that has some really well thought-out long-term plots that span over several books. I try to keep even those spoilers to a minimum, but if you are unfamiliar with The Hollows, you might want to check out my review of Dead Witch Walking and maybe start reading the series before you continue reading this review :)
As Rachel continues to work with Al, and tries to compartmentalize her life, telling herself a curse is just a different kind of spell, the coven continues to track her down by all means necessary. Even when Rachel tries to talk to the head honchos in a rational way, all they see is white spell vs black curse. The fact that Rachel uses the curses for good is not something the coven wants to even consider, especially because they use their white spells to kill. It always amazes me that Rachel truly is morally sound and saves other peoples’ lives even when her own life would be a lot easier if she just let them get killed or snatched by demons.
The pace is pretty fast, but slows down in important moments, and Black Magic Sanction shows the readers a lot about Rachel as a whole, how she is always trying to make the right choice even when she is at risk herself. I love that the readers also get to know even more about Trent, he is a very interesting, intriguing and secretive character whom I have appreciated from the get-go. He might be a criminal, but like Rachel, he appears to have good reasons for doing what he does.
One of the curses Rachel has twisted in the past is used again in Black Magic Sanction, but for the opposite effect, and for the best reason there ever is to use a curse and take the stain on her soul : to save someone she loves with all her heart. And the way she deals with loss and the possibility of even more of it is very well done. Rachel shows a softer side when she comforts someone else, a side that she doesn’t often have to put to the forefront.
In order to make sure the coven will leave her alone, Rachel comes up with a plan that is both hilarious and dangerous, and that danger is there in part because she needs her ex Nick to pull it through. I loved how Rachel dealt with this particular problem, though, and I appreciated it even more that Ivy and Jenks had finally thought of something to make sure Rachel would not ever fall into any of Nicks traps again. Because man, that guy is slippery!
I can’t give enough praise for The Hollows series, and I will be forever thankful to Brandee, Jaclyn and Robyn for telling me I needed to read this. So now, I’m returning the favor, if you haven’t read Black Magic Sanction yet, go pick it up! It’s awesome. There aren’t many series that keep being awesome through so many books, but here is one. And I wish it would go on forever, Rachel continues to surprise me, the side characters are always extremely well done, and the writing is close to perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2010Let me say that this book did not let me down. I LOVED EVERY CHAPTER!!! It's the best one yet. I told my husband that Kim Harrison has hit her stride.
Let me also address that the reviewer that said that this was the same old Rachel - you are WRONG! She is a dynamic character who has an identity crisis that is resolved by the end.
Let me now address the reviewers that are the Pierce haters: I say, finally Rachel has grown up and gotten herself a real boyfriend. They are perfect for each other, and Rachel realizes this herself. He is the right mix of power, "bad" boy, and seems to really care for her. (Although I wouldn't rule out betrayal in a future book - the leprachuan may know something we don't).
Lastly, let me address the reviewer that commented on every living character made an appearence in the book: You must not know Kim Harrision's writing style very well. As any reader knows she is a "back burner" kind of writer and if she is building bridges with people who tried to kill her in previous books - then Kim knows the bigger picture and that alliance may be important in a future plot.
Now, if you have never read any of the Hollows books and you are considering reading this one. Buy it now, but read it later, after you have read the previous books in the series. There is a reason why many other urban fantasy reviews are comparing other writers' books to hers (usually reviewers write something like, Don't waste your time, just re-read a Kim Harrison book while you are waiting for the next one to come out).
The rest of my review is for Kim Harrision: Loved Al's, Trent's, Pierce's and Ceri's participaton. Bravo for using all the characters thouroughly that are the most dynamic. Yippee for figuring out a way to keep Jenks in future books, love his foul mouth - although a tempered Jenks is bittersweet, too. Even though I sobbed like a baby at one part - you know where in the book I'm talking about - I thought you handled one of life's trials beautifully. Thanks for not exploiting the Ivy/Rachel thing in another book, that was so four books ago. Although I know Rachel will need to address finding the way to twist a curse soon to help Ivy or there will be consequences, I am sure. :-) The thing I love best is that you never know who to trust outside of Kim's personal circle. Trust is such a great concept to develop. I also loved the fact that even though she realizes that she may be a "black" witch, she chose not to kill the fairies. Anita Blake would have rationalized a kill, but Rachel chose to make an ally instead. I was so pleased. Rachel always takes the high road, what a great way to make a statement in the world of uraban fantasy, Rachel is a "gray" charater who is likable and a hero. I also loved how Rachel knew how to get out the jam she was in at the end of the book, but I didn't.
I can't wait to see what is coming with AL and Peirce in future books. I'm so excited. Al is such a conundrum - I think I am beginning to figure him out, but then again you hold all the cards and I maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks for writing the best book of the year so far. Witches RULE!

Great to see Harrison still focusing on the action and plot. Great characters remain on form. This one pulled on the emotions too

5.0 out of 5 stars Jolie surprise

5.0 out of 5 stars another great book in the series
I wonder what a book needs to do so the previous reviewer would give it 5 stars. She said she enjoyed this one immensely, she even bought 4 more books in the series because of it, but she gave it only 4 stars. Maybe it's just because she started the series at #8 - it IS more fun in the right order for sure. If you're considering this book but haven't read any other in the series yet, get Dead Witch Walking instead.
Anyway, I enjoyed this book too and it's worth 5 stars as far as I'm concerned. I read somewhere that Ms. Harrison is planning a total of 13 books in this series. I can hardly wait for the rest of them.
You may also want to consider buying the MP3 CD version along with (or instead of) this hardcover. Right now the MP3 version is $1 less. It also takes less room in the home. Besides, Marguerite Gavin does a fantastic job reading these books. She has read numbers 1..5 and 7 in the series and they're very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richtig gut

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Urban Fantasy
The Best Urban Fantasy series I have ever read. I love the writing of Kim Harrison. I read the first 10 books all in a row and view the series as one big book. Therefore, differentiating between individual volumes is impossible for me. Therefore I rate every book, so far, as a 5 and heartily recomend them to all.
