4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 46 ratings

College English professor Alison Bergeron thought that dating a cute NYPD detective like Bobby Crawford would be exciting and involve a lot of riding around in cruisers and putting away sleazy crooks, but he has yet to invite her on any stakeouts. . . .

Then when a friend asks her to help him find his nephew, she goes to Bobby for advice only to find out that he already knows about the case. He pulled the boy out of the Hudson River a few days earlier. The boy's employer calls it an accident, but Alison and Bobby aren't convinced.

With matchmaking and sleuthing to spare, staying out of trouble isn't on the syllabus when Alison and Bobby team up in

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Barbieri's witty third cozy to feature English professor Alison Bergeron (after 2007's Extracurricular Activities), Alison befriends Hernan Escalante and his extended family from Ecuador at the soup kitchen where she's doing community service north of New York City. When the beaten body of Jose Tomasso, one of Hernan's relatives and an illegal immigrant, surfaces in the Hudson near Riviera Pointe, a luxury condo development in the Bronx where Jose was a construction worker, Alison offers to help Hernan find out what happened. After a second murder at Riviera Pointe, Hernan disappears. Alison's investigation leads her and her sidekicks, including her faithful canine companion, Trixie, into all sorts of nail-biting danger. An offer of assistance from former sweetie Jack McManus, marketing director for the New York Rangers, tests Alison's relationship with her main squeeze, NYPD detective Bobby Crawford. Barbieri scores again with this high-octane blend of romance, laughs and chills. (Dec.)

This new "Murder 101 Mystery", is the third following the career of Alison Bergeron. Alison is a wisecracking English Professor at a small Catholic college in the Bronx, with a view of the Hudson. Her penchant for helping people out with her amateur detective work gets her into all sorts of situations.

The books are great fun reads and the current one is no exception. They really are "comedy murder mysteries", as we see things from the perspective of Alison's witty mind. Alison (try to imagine Lucille Ball, Nancy Drew, and Zena the Warrior Princess rolled into one) is in love with, among other things, the NY Rangers, martinis, and an NYPD detective.

The murder mystery part involves an illegal immigrant who Alison met while serving a community service sentence (see second book as to how she earned this court-ordered gig) in a soup kitchen. He's found floating in the Hudson, extremely deceased. Alison has great sympathy for the family and decides to involve herself. After all, with two other investigations to her credit, she now has lots of experience. In fact, she no longer faints.

So lots of fun, and highly recommended. And if you are looking for a great gift any of the "murder 101 mystery" books will do nicely.

The characters were well thought out and had good personalities. I have been to Dobbs Ferry so it was fun to imagine it in my head as I read the book. I liked the interactions between the characters. Overall a fun read.

Loved the characters, can't wait to read the next one.

I determined, after reading No. 6 in the series, that I was going to buy all of Barbieri's Murder 101 mysteries, so I have them all in hardback. I have previously reviewed three of them, giving them all 5 stars. This one was quite a let-down. I agree with the reviewer who said "the worst in the series." Nothing really happens for the first 175 pages. I usually enjoy the humor, but I was past page 300 before I started chuckling. I'd recommend that you buy this novel only if you have predetermined to read the entire series.

Although I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the first 2 in the series, I still thought it was a lot of fun and definitely worth reading. I am looking forward to reading book 4 in the series.

A note on the Kindle edition: Terrible formatting! I seriously considered returning it but since I really, really wanted to read it on Kindle I just put up with it. First off, the font was strange (different from the standard Kindle book font). I had to increase the font size to read it, but increasing it made it look overly large (but that was better than overly small, which the next size down seemed to be for me). Anyway, in addition to the strange font, there were strange marks scattered across almost every page, like small tick marks or lines. At first I thought something was wrong with my Kindle screen but I'd go to the next page and the mark would be somewhere else. Maybe I'm over-exaggerating when I say "almost every page" but it was on A LOT of them, enough to make me keep thinking "what the heck"?! Anyway, just wanted to put the "warning" out there. If you can overlook those things (which I obviously ended up doing, although I was kind of annoyed by it), then it's worth buying. There aren't any spelling errors or punctuation or spacing errors, just the weird stray marks on the pages and the strange font.

Quick Study, the third in the Murder 101 series, is another hit. The characters are compelling, the mystery is full of twists and turns, and the romance is believable and sweet. The dialogue is crisp and the humor is the laugh-out-loud variety. Enjoy!

Art Matters: The Art of Knowledge/The Knowledge of Art
Natural Law, Science, and the Social Construction of Reality

As a college professor who loves mysteries, this series hits the spot. A college professor gets involved with mysteries and not only helps solve them, but all too often becomes a victim as well.

In the course of the first novel in the series, she meets Crawford, a detective, and they develop a relationship. her husband has been running around on her, and he is in the midst of a divorce. When Maggie's husband is found murdered she becomes a suspect.

In this novel, there is some strange goings on at a new condo development in upper Manhattan overlooking the river. Maggie is also doing community service work serving dinner at a church. One of the families attending the dinner has members working at the development, but they are illegals. When one of them turns up murdered, Maggie gets involved.

Her involvement in the crime is often at loggerheads with Crawford, and this conflict adds tension to their relationship.

The overall structure of the series seems to be one of Maggie finding out information Crawford needs, but then he has to come to her aid.

The plot of this book I found to be a bit overdone but it was still readable. This is a good character driven series, intelligently written.
recommended to all who like good characters and good mysteries.
