HEIDI SWANSON'S approach to cooking whole, natural foods has earned her a global readership. From her Northern California kitchen, she introduced us to a less-processed world of cooking and eating through her award-winning blog, 101 Cookbooks, and in her James Beard Award–nominated cookbook, Super Natural Cooking, she taught us how to expand our pantries and integrate nutrient-rich superfoods into our diets.

In
Super Natural Every Day, Heidi helps us make nutritionally packed meals part of our daily repertoire by sharing a sumptuous collection of nearly 100 of her go-to recipes. These are the dishes that Heidi returns to again and again because they’re approachable, good for the body, and just plain delicious. This stylish cookbook is equal parts inspiration and instruction, showing us how to create a welcoming table filled with nourishing food for friends and family.

The seductively flavorful vegetarian recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, treats, and drinks are quick to the table but tasty enough to linger over. Grab a Millet Muffin or some flaky Yogurt Biscuits for breakfast on the go, or settle into a lazy Sunday morning with a stack of Multi-grain Pancakes and a steaming cup of Ginger Tea. A bowl of Summer Squash Soup or a couple of Chanterelle Tacos make for a light and healthy lunch, and for dinner, there’s Black Sesame Otsu, Pomegranate-Glazed Eggplant with Tempeh, or the aptly named Weeknight Curry. Heidi’s Rose Geranium Prosecco is the perfect start to a celebratory meal, and the Buttermilk Cake with fresh plums or Sweet Panzanella will satisfy even the most stubborn sweet tooth.

Gorgeously illustrated with over 100 photos that showcase the engaging rhythms of Heidi’s culinary life and travels,
Super Natural Every Day reveals the beauty of uncomplicated food prepared well and reflects a realistic yet gourmet approach to a healthy and sophisticated natural foods lifestyle.

Recipe Excerpts from Super Natural Every Day

Baked Oatmeal
Tutti-Frutti Crumble

From Publishers Weekly

The author of Super Natural Cooking and the blog 101 Cookbooks, Swanson offers a glimpse into her favorite everyday recipes. A huge and often preachy proponent of the buy organic/local/seasonal movement, she focuses on whole, natural foods including whole grains, whole grain flours, and fresh produce—ingredients that are seasonal and minimally processed. Recipes run the gamut from breakfast through desserts and include healthier variations of familiar favorites including crepes made with rye flour and ginger cookies with dried apricots and shaved chocolate. Lunch offerings include unique and palatable dishes such as kale salad with toasted coconut and sesame oil, and chanterelle tacos. Dinner recipes such as chickpea stew made with saffron, black pepper tempeh and weeknight curry made with tofu are big on flavor. Swanson spends several pages detailing her pantry staples including oils and fats, grains, and flours to guide those unfamiliar with key ingredients. For those looking to incorporate more healthful ingredients into their diet, Swanson offers a welcome variety of appetizing recipes that are easy enough to prepare on busy weeknights and sure to appeal. As the size of my cookbook library has grown, my criteria for purchasing (and keeping) cookbooks has gotten more difficult to meet. I ordered this one on a whim, as a sometimes reader of Heidi's 101 Cookbooks blog I was curious and the sneak peek she featured on her website really peaked my interest. It has more than exceeded my expectations. Her cookbook is filled with unique recipes, gorgeous photography and inspiring, well-written descriptions of each recipe. I would say about 50% of the recipes have photos which make me look forward to making and serving them even more.

It's obvious that Heidi has gone out of her way to make this cookbook approachable by using easily found ingredients and by including substitutions in her notes for those that might be more difficult to find. She also focuses on simplifying steps and trying to dirty as few dishes as possible which I am so thankful for. So far, I have only cooked the ravioli salad with pepitas and black olives. It was simply delicious and very easy to make! I look forward to trying many, many recipes from this book and sharing them with my family and friends. Thank you Heidi!

Though I am an experienced cook, I really enjoyed an easy collection of recipes that rely on pantry items that can be made in a flash - that even my husband can make on a day when I'm running late (he's relegated only to boiling water). I found the images and descriptions thoughtful and captivating, and as a writer myself, that's rare for me to say.

My cooking style tends toward more modern flavors, and I'm enjoying immersing myself in a cooking style so similar yet strangely distinct from my own. Each and every dish seems so homey and comforting, and I'm looking forward to cooking my way through it (though I struggle in following recipes and tend to be an improviser).

As a fan of her website, I felt the book provided much new content and was incredibly pleased.

I encourage you to read through all reviews and take a walk through her book before making a decision - I noticed many people were dissuaded by a single comment, and I think they're missing out. Of course, that's simply my opinion, as well, and I hope you'll make your own!

I buy some cookbooks as food porn, just to enjoy the complexity or subtlety of the author's ideas. But with long lists of ingredients and tricky techniques, I have no real desire to try anything. Then there are a few cookbooks I reach for regularly for tasty everyday cooking that's good for me. The first of these was The Moosewood Cookbook. I've made most of the recipes over the years but I've made Gypsy Soup, cauliflower curry, samosas, sweet&sour red cabbage and the Spinach Ricotta Pie countless times. I love that cookbook.

I now have another workhorse to love and rely on. I dog-earred so many recipes I want to make, there are more selected than ignored. The techniques are unfussy, the ingredients easy to get at the grocery store.

The recipes are organized by meal and accompaniments. What I love most, perhaps, is the inclusion of so many whole grains and veg I haven't used and new flavor combinations I'm anxious to taste. I'm eating meatless at least two days a week and this cookbook is going to be heavy rotation. Too many noteworthy recipes to name here.

I bought this book because several of the food blogs I love and refer to regularly seemed to have a lot of love for Heidi. Great referral, I am really enjoying both her book and her website. I have long loved cooking and baking, and I'm picky about the cookbooks I keep/buy/use because a.) who has the space and b.) it is so easy to find a lot of what I want online. The books I DO own need to be inspirational and have a number of key recipes that are unique that I will keep coming back to. I feel this book is both. I love her writing style, stories, pictures, and the flow of the book - they make me want to cook/bake, and do so in a healthy way! Plus, I have tried about half the recipes in the book and love most of them. I tweak them, I am a recipe tweaker, but the base and the ideas behind them are solid and original, for the most part. Yes, she has some basic stuff in here, too - but it doesn't offend me, everyone's background is different and she just includes tips on things that are essential and important to her. No matter how much love I have for a particular cookbook, I have never found one where every single recipe is useful or of interest to me. This book has encouraged me to use greek yogurt more in my cooking and baking, to do creative things with whole grains, to use less sugar and amp up flavor profiles in other ways, and cook more vegetarian options for our family. I would have liked the book to be a little longer, perhaps more main course meals - but all in all the book was certainly worth my money, is in my regular rotation, and is a great inspiration in my every day cooking.

I have both of Heidi's cookbooks and not only do I love to just flip through them and imagine and dream, but when I get around to cooking the recipes are easy and full of unexpected flavors that delight me every time. Since reading The China Study, I've been making an effort to eat mostly plants. Her cookbooks make cooking and eating without meat feel like an art, especially for someone like me who has just the basic home-cooking skills, but paired with an adventurous palette and the desire to purchase and try new ingredients. My assistant at work is now completely addicted to the muscavado sunflower kernels. Something so easy, but just the greatest idea, and you can sprinkle them on anything. Oh, and several of my friends now regularly add sparkling citrus ade to their cheap wine in the summer. Simple and great. Everything in her books is like something you'd order at a really cool restaurant, but it's all easy to create at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grossartig!
