Night of January 16th Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 115 ratings

The definitive edition of Ayn Rand's famous play, incorporating the author's final changes.

On one level,
Night of January 16th is a totally gripping drama about the rise and destruction of a brilliant and ruthless man. On a deeper level, it is a superb dramatic objectification of Ayn Rand's vision of human strength and weakness. Since its original Broadway success, it has achieved vast worldwide popularity and acclaim.

To the world, he was a startlingly successful international tycoon, head of a vast financial empire. To his beautiful secretary-mistress, he was a god-like hero to be served with her mind, soul and body. To his aristocratic young wife, he was an elemental force of nature to be tamed. To his millionaire father-in-law, he was a giant whose single error could be used to destroy him.

What kind of man was Bjorn Faulkner? Only you, the reader, can decide.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

McKay's Play Series comprises a group of three-act and one-act plays which have been selected because of their appropriateness for amateurs. Many of them have had prosperous and nationally advertised New York success. They are the plays your audience want to see and enjoy.

About the Author

Born February 2, 1905, Ayn Rand published her first novel, We the Living, in 1936. Anthem followed in 1938. It was with the publication of The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957) that she achieved her spectacular success. Rand’s unique philosophy, Objectivism, has gained a worldwide audience. The fundamentals of her philosophy are put forth in three nonfiction books, Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, The Virtues of Selfishness, and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal. They are all available in Signet editions, as is the magnificent statement of her artistic credo, The Romantic Manifesto.

If you know, you know. A classic, based on your philosophy you will have your own ending.

About half of the time the play is performed, the jury from the audience voted for the accused. How would you vote? The case is close enough to be at least questionable, so it says more about the jury than the case. The play engages the audience - and you as the reader. Loved it.

Got this for a play-reading group. Was surprised to enjoy the play. Doesn't seem to invoke much of Rand's idealogy. Great edition with her final changes.

Having the audience participate as the jury was very interesting indeed. It has the potential to add different dimensions to each and every performance. The plot was had a familiar theme but was written very well.

This is a book. This is a story. This is a play. This is a book, story and play worth reading again and again. One in which the jury, the reader, I, am on trial.

An early Ayn Rand novel that while not as sprawling as Fountainhead or Atlas contains the same important (and scarily timely) themes. Any fan or newbie to Ayn Rand should definitely read it.

Para quem conhece Ayn Rand, é uma pegada diferente, mas bem gostosa de ler. O desenrolar da estória é envolvente.

 Review for ISBN-13: 978-0452264861

Unfortunately for me, all online reviews go on about the play and the plot and the intrigue. We have book reviews for that. I feel this platform is where the reviews should be reserved for the objective quality of the publishing itself, the fonts, the paper quality, the cover, if the lines are evenly spaced, margins etc.

The site too, contributes in obfuscating reviews by clubbing all editions and publishing of the same book together so one has a hard time realizing if all the heaps and praises for a Rs.2000 book applies to the cheaper Rs.800 copy they plan on buying.

In addition to all this, I couldn't find any review on the quality of the print online and so had a really hard time figuring out if this was a genuine copy. Given its a penguin reprint, compared to other books I've purchased recently the fonts are really large and the lines have plenty of spaces between them, though the print itself looks like its from a scanned online copy. The paper is quite coarse unbecoming of a penguin publishing and no part of a visual inspection manifests ingenuity.

Since this is the only print available online that I know of, I hope someone else reviewing this copy would be able to confirm it.
