- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2025Great historical, action packed romance! I loved every minute of reading it, but be warned that there are several open door, explicit sex scenes. That’s not my thing so I skipped over those pages. I recommend this book for the fresh look at American history from a minority perspective. It was very enlightening and I recommend you add this to your reading library.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2015Night Hawk is set in Kansas and Wyoming in the 1870s. The Civil War is over and The Reconstruction is still in force. Jim Crow has not yet reared its ugly head, but endemic racism is always an issue.
In the Jenkin's classic Indigo, her heroine was dignified and humble, Night Hawk’s Maggie is a force of nature, bloodied but unbowed. After losing her beloved parents, Maggie has managed to scrape by, occasionally finding sanctuary, but often falling prey to unscrupulous people, and also to her own temper. Her latest mess is the accidental death of her boss while she was fighting off his sexual assault. She is of mixed race and poor which is enough to condemn her in the eyes of the dead man’s father and the community. The local lawman attempts to transport her to another town to await her reprieve in peace, but things go horribly awry and she is passed off to a US Marshall, Ian Vance, “The Preacher”. The book is largely a road trip undertaken by the two as Maggie tries to escape and Vance keeps trying, unsuccessfully, to find another person to deliver Maggie to for safekeeping so he can go home to his ranch.
Night Hawk is clever and well-paced, not to mention laugh out loud funny. One thing I particularly enjoyed is that the couple marries a. after much persistence from a scrumptious man who knows a good thing when he sees it and b. in the middle of the story, so that the balance of the book takes on a “you and me against the world” tone. If romance novels are about finding the right partner, it makes sense for that partnership to be used and tested. All men in romance novels are delicious: gorgeous, strong, and sometimes heroic, but in Jenkins' books they are truly heroes, not just for plotting purposes, but in the context of their times. For the equally heroic women, Jenkins acknowledges something that I often think of with stories set in the past. In our world, beauty can be a gift and a ticket to a better life. For women living in a time when women, especially those of colour, had no power, beauty could be a liability. It certainly was for Maggie.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2011Wow! Is all I can say right now as I type remembering how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. I didn't want it to end. I will be forever grateful to my sister for exposing me to her Historical Romance Novels that at first, I had refused to read. Many of Beverly's books were out of print so, to complete my sister's collection I had to pay quite a bit for them through Amazon's Marketplace. Most times paying $20-30 dollars for a $3-4 book! This was before ereaders, unfortunately. I myself just purchased, in the Marketplace, Belle and the Beau and Josephine and the Soldier, for a hefty sum. I have no complaints or regrets because her books/ stories are worth it! In my opinion, because Mrs. Jenkins shares a bit of Black History in her books, not only are you getting a fabulously written story but a lesson in history that you probably didn't receive in school. I enjoy the lesson. All it takes is to read just one of Mrs. Jenkins stories and you undoubtably will want to read them all.
In Night Hawk, I fell in love with Ian. What a backstory to this incredible man. As I read, I kept saying to myself, " I want a Preacher too". I often like to ask "Where are the real men of the old day"? Not, this new Metrosexual man that doesn't like to get dirty, spends more time in the bathroom than a woman, and gets mani- pedi's. When I need a refresher of what I desire, I turn to a book from Beverly Jenkins or Brenda Jackson who both write about strong Alpha Male "yummy" characters that will get any woman's blood boiling! Now back to Ian, his love for his birth land (Scotland), his new community of people and Maggie were incredible to read about. Maggie was an orphaned, mistreated child who endured terrible misjustices as an adult as well. She is a smart, gun shooting, quill poking, fierce woman who fell head over heels for the Night Hawk, but trusted no one. I don't want to give anything away, but these two lost people found solace in one another that transpired into a wonderful love story. Kudos to Beverly Jenkins, she's done it again!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2023"Night Hawk" was my Black History Month 2023 read and fans of the inimitable Ms. Beverly Jenkins will already know what kind of ride I was in for.
It is no exaggeration to call the male main character of this novel a "Hero" - Ian "Preacher" Vance hits many favorite romance novel notes in that he is, all at once, the grandson of a Scottish laird, a reformed rake, a bounty hunter, a lawman, and a wild west rancher. Only an author of Ms. Bev's caliber could pull off such a feat, and she does it with aplomb. Preacher is immensely likeable. Swoon-worthy and then some.
He clearly needed a love interest for the ages, and Maggie Freeman is absolutely that. She has spent her life dogged by misfortune, but her fighting spirit remains intact, and when life knocks this woman down, she never stays there long. Preacher can't help but admire her, and neither could I.
Together, they make romance magic, and I ate up every twist and turn of this terrific historical page-turner. Highly recommend.
