Dead Run Kindle Edition

A divorced family councilor relocates to Key West to investigate her sister’s disappearance in this thriller by a New York Times–bestselling author.

“I’m in trouble, Liz. I’ve uncovered something . . . They’re watching . . .

That panicked message on her answering machine is the last time Liz Ames hears from her sister Rachel, pastor of Paradise Christian Church in Key West, Florida.

Compelled to uncover the truth about her sister’s disappearance, she heads to Key West. Within hours of her arrival a successful banker jumps to his death. Then a teenage girl whom Rachel was counseling is found brutally murdered. The ritualistic style of the killing is hauntingly similar to that used by the notorious “New Testament” serial killer—now on death row.

Could the teen’s murder be related to Rachel’s disappearance? Is a copycat killer at work? And why do the police refuse to help?

For answers, Liz turns to Rick Wells, a former Miami cop who worked the fringes of the “New Testament” investigation. Together they peel away layers of deception to reveal a terrifying adversary—and the unspeakable evil at the heart of this island paradise.

From Publishers Weekly

Troubled teenagers, a satanic cult, a serial killer and hurricane-force evil disturb the island paradise of Key West in Spindler's latest chiller. Divorced family counselor Liz Ames relocates from St. Louis to Key West to investigate the disappearance of her sister, Pastor Rachel Howard, who left Liz a mysterious phone message about a teenaged girl, illegal activities and threats to her life. Local police chief Val Lopez does not share Liz's certainty that her sister has fallen victim to foul play, nor is hers the only island mystery confronting police: a wealthy loan officer with deviant tastes has plummeted to his death, a suspected suicide; another bank employee is reported missing before her body washes ashore, a suspected homicide; and just as Liz gets to know her, a teenage girl is brutally murdered and mutilated, her runaway boyfriend the prime suspect. Liz seeks help from Rick Wells, Miami cop-turned-bar owner and close friend of the police chief; Rachel's successor, Pastor Tim; and Heather Ferguson, the blonde bombshell owner of a bikini boutique. Not knowing which locals she can trust, Liz (who's not entirely honest herself) heads into the eye of a hurricane and a classic confrontation between good and evil. Spindler (Bone Cold; All Fall Down) demonstrates the power of faith over satanic forces with campy descriptions of both and embellishes her by-the-numbers thriller with savvy amounts of sex and moral outrage, investigation and confrontation, psychology and romance.

It is obvious that Erica puts a lot of time into her research of settings in Key West and detective/police work. That is what makes her books so enjoyable for me to identify some of the places I have seen in her books. The suspense and twists and turns in Dead Run made it very difficult for me to put this book down so I ended up reading it straight through and I was not disappointed. There were quite a few characters to keep up with but it was challenging for me to try and figure how Erica was going to tie them all together and wow was I surprised at the end!

Liz Ames, is a smart and very courageous psychologist who is willing to risk almost everything to find out what happened to her sister, a church pastor. She faces corruption, a possible satanic cult and can never be sure whom to trust right until the very end.
This is a well-written novel, fast-paced and also apparently fairly well researched.
Although the editorial review on Amazon does seem to hint at this, it is not a 'Christian' novel, per se. Faith and spirituality are treated respectfully, nonetheless.
Nor is it an 'erotic' novel, either, the Amazon categories notwithstanding. There is some sex in it, but nothing very graphic or pro-longed.

In any case, here is my detailed review:
Heroine: 5 stars
Heroes: 4 stars
Plot: 4 stars
Writing style: 5 stars
Humor: 1 star
Action: 3 stars
Suspense: 5 stars
Romance: 3 stars
Sensuality: 1.5 stars
Ending: HEA, for the most part, at least.
Would I read another book by this author? Probably.

This is not my first book by Spindler and I'm amazed it was one of the only ones I hadn't read. I love her writing style. The twists and turns of the story are done brilliantly and the end is always a shock. The way all the pieces fall together literally knocks the breath out of you. Erica Spindler is in my top Three Mystery/Suspense/Police Procedural authors!

Story was ok but my pet peeve is that there are grammatical errors in this novel. Totally unacceptable. I wonder if the editors will see this review and make the necessary corrections.

This story is so well written and brings in a different element than in Erica Spindler's other books (at least the ones I have already read and consumed!) - religion and faith. Very fast paced, heart pounding moments and there were many times that I thought I had figured out "who done it" only to find out that I could not have been more wrong!
This is a must have Spindler novel!!!

This is the kind of book you hate to come to the end. The ending was a great surprise. When something is so interesting you don't want an end to it.

I have only recently discovered this author and have since read several of her novels. She has not disappointed. This particular book grabbed ahold of my interest and did not let go.

Wow! This is one of the most exciting books I have read in a long while. It kept me guessing and page turning right to the very end. Stephen Spielberg should read it, because it would make a terrific film!

I really enjoyed this apart from the predictable girl falls for boy factor. Lots of different ways the story could have panned out and it kept me on my seat. Good read!

Erica Spindler's books are always good to read, with a twist at the end that you don't always see coming; each book is a story in itself, but if you have read previous ones then you get even more out of them. Think I have read most of them and enjoyed evey one.
