Invitations from God: Accepting God's Offer to Rest, Weep, Forgive, Wait, Remember and More (Transforming Resources) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 111 ratings

Some invitations we desperately want: "Will you marry me?" "Would you consider a promotion?" Other invitations we never want to receive but must respond to all the same: "What treatment do you want for your tumor?" Invitations pound away at the coastlines of the soul with a transforming force.God is also sending invitations. Sometimes they seem less compelling than anything on my to-do list. Why would I want to say yes to the invitation to rest when I'm already so far behind? Why follow when I could lead? Why accept invitations to weep or to admit I am wrong or to wait? Saying yes might slow me down, sabotage my agenda and even undo who I think I am.Adele Calhoun, author of the popular Spiritual Disciplines Handbook, offers a book about invitations like these—divine invitations we miss or ignore because we've said yes to going with the cultural flow. While these invitations from God can sometimes be difficult to accept, they can heal and restore even as they shape where we go, what we do and who we become. What we say yes to, what we say no to forms the terrain of our future.Included in this book are reflection questions and exercises as well as overview charts with recommended disciplines to guide you through each theme. As you attend to the often hidden, quiet voice of the Great Inviter, you will find yourself as God created you to be.

I co-lead a large women's spiritual formation class at our church. We used Invitations from God for the last year and it has been one of our all time favorites. Adele invited us to not just take in more good information but to really explore the invitations for authentic transformation. Her book was challenging yet readable and worked for a broad spectrum of faith. Each chapter is written around a framework of exploring the invitation, scripture related to it, awarenesses, roadblocks and practices. I can't say enough about this book!

I enjoyed reading this particular book. Adele provides some good thought provoking and encouraging insights. It's not a deep theological book so if you are looking for that this is not it. It is good though for those of us who just want to learn and grow and walk deeper with our Father in everyday ways. This would be a good book to use for a small study group.

I would say this is an easy read, however, I was caught off a bit at times when she would use words that are just not used today. And she didn't use them a lot but every now and then they would pop up and I would have to re-read the part to understand it.

This will be my go-to recommendation for spiritual formation from now on. Similar to Scazzero's "Emotionally Healthy Spirituality" but a little more user-friendly, especially for women. I found myself so often on the pages of this book. Neatly sums up a lot of what God has been teaching me over the past few years, which is why I'll be recommending it to women from now on.
