Tiger's Claw: A Novel (Patrick McLanahan Book 18) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 2,200 ratings

Former Air Force captain and New York Times bestselling author Dale Brown is an acknowledged master when it comes to bringing military action to breathtaking life and he has received glowing accolades since his debut publication, Flight of the Old Dog.

Tiger’s Claw proves once again that every rave has been well deserved. Set in the near future, Tiger’s Claw imagines a scenario in which tensions escalate between an economically powerful China and a United States weakened by a massive economic downfall, bringing the two superpowers to the brink of total destruction. Brown’s popular protagonist, retired Air Force lieutenant-general Patrick McLanahan (of A Time for Patriots, Rogue Forces, and other Brown bestsellers), is back with his son Brad McLanahan and they’re preparing for the impending apocalyptic clash of men and military technology.

The incomparable Dale Brown scores again with a frighteningly possible story of war and global politics that’s ideal for fans of Vince Flynn and Brad Thor.

From Booklist

In Brown’s latest, Patrick McLanahan is back to save the world one more time. A reconnaissance plane is hit with a new type of weapon that fries the internal electronics of its target. The plane crashes into the South China Sea in an area considered international waters. Unfortunately, a coup within the Chinese government has put a new leader in power who contends those waters belong to China and is willing to do anything to make his point. McLanahan, a retired air-force general now heading a tech company that has been working on modifying older planes that don’t rely on computers, is called into action. The story grips the reader from the opening page right up to the shocking conclusion. Brown knows how to deliver action with a military slant without making it too tech-heavy for readers not familiar with the jargon (though there is a helpful glossary). Along with the compelling action, Tiger’s Claw profits from the scenes dealing with Patrick and his son, Bradley, giving this installment in the series a stronger human angle than many of its predecessors. --Jeff Ayers

From the Back Cover

When China launches its first successful test of its Dong Feng-21D antiship ballistic missile, it imperils American military superiority. Can the United States, in the wake of an economic recession and decreased military spending, compete with China?

Retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Patrick Mc-Lanahan reasons that the U.S. can afford to refurbish old but potent long-range bombers to promote the AirSea Battle strategy. President Kenneth Phoenix commissions McLanahan to lead this effort, and soon America stands ready to deploy a task force in the South China Sea. The People's Liberation Army recognizes this growing air threat and aggressively attacks its neighbors, hoping to convince the U.S. Navy to stay away. But McLanahan is finally given the green light to challenge the Chinese threat head on.

With Tiger's Claw, Dale Brown brings to life a thrilling and dramatic story that is right out of what could be the headlines of the not-so-distant future.

Another Dale Brown Master work

Another Dale Brown Master work
Although Dale Brown collaberates in this book as he has been doing for some time now, this novel has all the pieces required to make it an outstanding novel. He uses the same format of characters, nations, personalities, and future weapons that we have come to expect and enjoy. Once again the antaganist is China and now the "good guys" are mainly civilian. I defer to outline this peice of work, but I can say it is exciting and true to form with the good guys coming out on top. If you like Dale Brown, you will really enjoy this book.

I am a Dale Brown fan and have been for many years. This book is yet another hit for him. As I am a fan of this type story/scenario I find much of this to be completely believable. I do think there is a basis for China to attack other countries in the South China Sea because of their claim to the territory even though the other countries, too, claim the same rights. Right now Viet Nam and the Philippines claim equal rights to be exploring for oil with China in the area of the Spratley Islands and other areas. Taiwan also has been expressing their own claims to South China Sea territory so some day there may be serious fighting rather than the subdued skirmishes taking place now. As for the secret weapons China may or may no have, we have to be aware that we already have similar weapons in the experimental stage or in development and that China may have stolen those secrets already. Nothing is impossible or implausible so this book may be closer to truth than to fiction.

I've been a Dale Brown fan ever since the Flight of the Old Dog. He is the master story teller in the military action genre. IMO, he's right up there with Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin and others. I rated this book at 4 stars because I seldom give out 5 unless I think the item cannot be surpassed. This is a fast paced, attention grabbing novel, completely enjoyable, but I was able to put it down to go to sleep (late.)

dale brown doesn't disappoint . This is my fifth or sixth dale brown. Our library has only a limited supply
so Amazon is filling in the gaps. It came really fast. It's fun to have the alternate story lines:China misbehaving
in the S. China seas, President Pheonix grappling with a recession and a tiny defense budget; and Bradley
MacClanahan maturing both as a person and a character in the book. I enjoy all the jargon and specs.
Note the reader for this series is outstanding. His intonation for each character is really individual. My ex-navy
husband never minds listening (in the car to) these stories. Other stories other readers send him into a coma.
I'm not exmilitary(rather a late middle age housewife) but I adore how Brown's stories tie into current
events.

Having read everything Dale Brown has written or collaborated on, I found this book to be his most dissatisfying. I'm not going to put any spoilers in here, but as usual, tech is his strong suit. But there are quite a few holes that leave the reader wondering, "What about the (insert skirmish here)?" For example, the book leaves out some important details about the political fallout that would result from the downing of a helicopter that contained a survivor of another air attack. There are other similar omissions. And the bottom totally drops out of the climax--it just seems as if Mr. Brown just got tired of writing it, or was up against a deadline, and couldn't finish what should have been fairly simple for such an accomplished writer. Pretty satisfied with most of the book, but quite disappointed with the ending. Not sure I'll follow this line any further.

In the summer of 1990, I was twelve years old and travelling from CA to NY. I saw a book in the airport kiosk featuring a really cool-looking military jet. Without even reading the back of the book, I purchased Day of the Cheetah by Dale Brown. By the end of my summer trip to see my grandmother, I was a fan of Patrick McLanahan and the many other well-developed characters in Dale Brown's books. I quickly read Flight of the Old Dog and Sky Masters before Night of the Hawk came out and was so excited to find out David Luger survived the Old Dog's attack on the Soviets. Since Night of the Hawk, I have read every Dale Brown book shortly after its release (save for the Dreamland series with Jim DeFelice... not a fan). Tiger's Claw was no exception.

Dale Brown tells tales of fiction based on headlines ripped from the real world and incorporates some of the best military technology known to man and the best military technology from the author's imagination. True to form, Tiger's Claw continues the trend, but does not introduce any new technologies. That is perfect for the story line though as the decline of the US military's dominance as a world power is in full affect as China's dominance is on the rise.

The only thing this book lacked was in-depth character development. For those of us emotionally invested in the characters, we already know Ann Page is really running the country behind the somewhat indecisive president. That wasn't really addressed in Tiger's Claw though. For those of you that are new to Dale Brown's adventures, I highly recommend you reading some of the past books even after reading this one to find out more about his intriguing characters. My unbiased rating is that this is a four-star book -- but as an emotionally invested reviewer, you get my biased five-star rating. Thanks for reading!

When I was a young teenager I began reading dale Brown's books like Hammer Head, Tin man, and all of the amazing works about dreamland and Patrick. Brown's writtings touched me so much that it led me to my current career that has been very rewarding. Needless to say, I'm invested in his writing.

When i saw this book and read the description, I was excited that Brown had decided to bring Patrick back. Even though the story line and plot development were somewhat similar to previous books, I felt like something was different with this novel when compared to his others. As others have mentioned, I don't Think Brown invested as much time into the characters and the military technical aspects which does hurt his die hard fans.

My only advice is for new readers....if you have recently stumbled upon Brown, please do nottead this book until you have read his others, then finish with this one. You'll appreaciate it much more and the ending, while hard to take, will make sense and bring some closure.

Given that his other books with different characters and other story lines besides dreamland have not done very well, I'm not sure what Brown will do with himself. He has left one primary avenue open, but it will be interesting to see if he pursues it.

Wow! Never saw that end coming... For those who have not yet read this book, I will not divulge what I am referring to but to those who have, I say again, didn't see that one coming at all!!!
The story follows on nicely in sequence and picks up some time after it's prequel, leads into a believable scenario where the excitement builds slowly and continuously over each page. There are times when the reader knows what's coming and they feel like shouting into the book to alert the characters, obviously to no avail. The story continues inexorably to the climax where I found myself saying, where's the rest of the story but all too soon realising I wasn't about to get any more.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and am now waiting to see if this will lead any further
