Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die: Musings from the Road Kindle Edition
In Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die, Willie Nelson muses about his greatest influences and the things that are most important to him, and celebrates the family, friends, and colleagues who have blessed his remarkable journey. Willie riffs on everything, from music to poker, Texas to Nashville, and more. He shares the outlaw wisdom he has acquired over the course of eight decades, along with favorite jokes and insights from family, bandmates, and close friends. Rare family photographs, beautiful artwork created by his son, Micah Nelson, and lyrics to classic songs punctuate these charming and poignant memories.
A road journal written in Willie Nelson’s inimitable, homespun voice and a fitting tribute to America’s greatest traveling bard, Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die—introduced by another favorite son of Texas, Kinky Friedman—is a deeply personal look into the heart and soul of a unique man and one of the greatest artists of our time, a songwriter and performer whose legacy will endure for generations to come.

From the Back Cover
You won't see no sad and teary eyes
When I get my wings, and it's my time to fly
Just call my friends and tell them
There's a party, come on by
So just roll me up and smoke me when I die
In Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die, Willie Nelson muses about his greatest influences and the things that are most important to him, and celebrates the family, friends, and colleagues who have blessed his remarkable journey. Willie riffs on everything: music, wives, Texas, politics, horses, religion, marijuana, children, the environment, poker, hogs, Nashville, karma, and more. He shares the outlaw wisdom he has acquired over eight decades, along with favorite jokes and insights from friends and others close to him. Rare family pictures, beautiful artwork created by his son Micah Nelson, and lyrics to classic songs punctuate these charming and poignant memories. Willie Nelson has touched millions, and none more deeply than his family, friends, and bandmates, several of whom share, for the first time, intimate stories about the Red Headed Stranger.
From teaching a granddaughter to play the guitar to touring with the Highwaymen, from picking cotton while growing up in Texas to being home with the tribe on Maui, Willie takes you on the tour bus and, through candid observations and vivid recollections, gives you a front-row seat to his remarkable world. But beware: "You know you shouldn't be reading this BS, it could ruin you for all time to come," he says. "You could end up a social outcast like me, an outlaw!"
At once a road journal written in his inimitable, homespun voice and a fitting tribute to America's greatest traveling bard, Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die—introduced by Kinky Friedman, another favorite son of Texas—is a deeply personal look into the heart and soul of a unique man and one of the greatest artists of our time, a songwriter and performer whose legacy will endure for generations to come.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2023I will admit I am not much of a country music fan, but Willie has been one of the few that I do enjoy. This book is a memoir and an instruction on how to live a good life. I truly enjoyed it, and was especially taken with how he expressed his feelings about guns… I couldn’t have said it better. Bravo, Willie, and thank you for a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2025I love Willie Nelson. When I was 17, I spent three days in the miserable heat for his 4th of July picnic concerts. He and the Outlaws did not disappoint even when the sound system failed. Decades later, he played at my small community college with about 1200 people in the audience. He still had the magic. After the show, he sat on the edge of the stage, just talking and visiting. What a gift he gave us that night.
Reading this book resembles listening to Willie reminiscing. There's no real order to his tales; he's a verbal rambler. If you're looking for a straight narrative biography of his life, this book is not it. For someone who's such a great songwriter, literature is not his genre. He rightly called this work Musings for a reason. Not only is it filled with his musings but those of his wives, children, grandchildren. While interesting to read, it would help to have a framework to set these stories. But it's Willie Nelson, so all is forgiven.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024Got as a gift. The recipient read it about 3 times as he enjoyed it thoroughly.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2012If you are a Willie Nelson fan, read this book. If you are NOT a Willie Nelson fan, then you should be, and you will be if you read this book. Willie is a great man, poet, philosopher and family man. The book? Why the book is a work of art. There are lyrics, ( mostly his own) and illustrations by his son Micah.
We all know a lot of things about Willie Nelson, his music, his tribulations and his charity. I had no idea that he was a philosopher, or a man so loving that his patchwork family doesn't know or care who started where or why. That, in my opinion, is his greatest talent. He is an amazing and loving family man.
Scattered throughout the book you will find stories and thoughts about Willie, written by family and friends. They are a beautiful tribute. This book is not great literature, but it is great art, and great love.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024This book is full of Willie’s words, family and music memories. Willie is now 91 years old…he had a blessed life, truly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Same ol' wise Red Headed Stranger
More than an autobiography, the reader will find in "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die" anechdotes and other stories that are additions to his previous bio-books "Willie: An Autobiography", "The Facts of Life: and Other Dirty Jokes" and "The Tao of Willie: A Guide to the Happiness in Your Heart". For those who don't know much about Nelson's life, "Willie: an Autobiography" or Joe Nick Patoski's (highly recommended) "Willie Nelson: An Epic Life" would be the right place to start. A new reader will find "Roll Me Up" disorganized, and probably will think that it is just a collection of randomly written thoughts.
That being said, coming from a HUGE WILLIE NELSON FAN (needless to say, this paragraph might be highly biased), the book offers as usual interesting stories and thoughts of the wise Red Headed Stranger. Besides of Willie's side of the story, the book is complemeted by comments of The Family. A vast term in Willie's world, "The Family" is composed by his blood family and of course, his musical and road family.
As I said before, it can be taken easily as an update to those previous bios, all of them letting us know that Shotgun Willie is still on the road, showing that as ol' Billy Joe Shaver put it down in words "moving is the closest thing to being free" (goddamn right, AMEN).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read
Even if you are not a Willy Nelson, or country music, fan, you should read this book. It's probably one of the most disjointed books I have ever read, so it's not your conventional read, but it's still worth the time spent. I was constantly surprised, amused, entertained, and sometimes even caught myself nodding in agreement at the wacky, but grounded, wisdom & wit. I personally enjoyed it more in snatches, rather than as a sit-down-and-read-me book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly written book
A brilliantly written book,It is like the man himself is talking straight to you. I can imagine if I ever met him or was in his company this is how he would be. I would recommend this to be read by all Willie Nelson Fans both young and old( or in my case very old)
