From Booklist

Thank God his wife is a terrible shot. That is the first thought that crosses Godric St. John’s mind when he unexpectedly encounters an armed and very cranky Margaret “Megs” St. John in London’s most dangerous neighborhood. To her credit, Megs has no idea she is shooting at her husband; she is really trying to put a hole in the Ghost of Saint Giles. Two years earlier, the Ghost of Saint Giles killed Roger Fraser-Burnsby, and Megs vowed she would one day exact revenge on the man who murdered the love of her life. Of course, Megs had another reason for coming to London. After their wedding, nearly two years ago, Megs and Godric have lived separate lives, but now Megs is determined to seduce her husband into giving her the one thing she desperately wants: a baby. But what to do now that she realizes her husband is the same man she has sworn to kill? The fifth installment in Hoyt’s impeccably written, Georgian-set Maiden Lane series delivers plenty of swashbuckling thrills and wry wit, while the exquisitely crafted chemistry between Megs and Godric is pure passion. --John Charles

Elizabeth Hoyt is a New York Times, USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling author of historical romance, including reader favorite, The Raven Prince. She also writes deliciously fun contemporary romance under the name Julia Harper. Born in New Orleans, but raised in the frigid winters of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Elizabeth was fortunate to travel extensively when she was growing up and lived in St. Andrews, Scotland; Oxford England; and Kawasaki, Japan. She went to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she not only earned a degree in anthropology but also met Mr. Hoyt. Some years later, after a short pause to birth and raise two children, Elizabeth realized that she really wasn't qualified to do anything but Make up Stories and started writing.

Elizabeth now lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with three untrained canines, a garden in constant need of weeding, and, of course, Mr. Hoyt.

    4.5 Stars

I absolutely adore Elizabeth Hoyt's writing and have been a fan of hers ever since I read her debut, The Raven Prince. Her current series, Maiden Lane, is shaping up to be some of her best work yet and Lord of Darkness really helps with that distinction. It has everything that I have come to expect from a Hoyt romance: unconventional and flawed characters, tons of chemistry, multiple plotlines that come together as a cohesive whole, spicy sex scenes, and the unique setting.

For this book, Elizabeth Hoyt provided readers with two characters who have had a hard time in the series: Margaret "Megs" Reading and Godric St. John. Fans of the series will recognize Megs and Godric from earlier books which is helpful for reading this one, but I don't think it is necessary. These two have both dealt with serious personal losses and were forced to marry one another years ago. Now, they are getting the opportunity to really connect with each other and try to make a happy life for themselves despite their earlier tragedies.

Megs has had a difficult time that really shows her strength of character. Her fiance was murdered earlier in the series and, because she was pregnant, she was convinced to marry Godric in order to prevent scandal. Unfortunately, all the drama caused Megs to miscarry her baby shortly after the wedding, and she has been grieving for it, and her fiance, ever since. I think Megs is a classic Hoyt heroine. She is kind, determined, and very intelligent. Her main reasons for coming to London are to get pregnant and to get revenge for her fiance's murder. She approaches both tasks with stubborn resourcefulness though not always with the most logic. I really admired how she reacted to the changes in her plans and thought her handling of Godric and his grief was respectful and loving.

The hero, Godric St. John, had the misfortune of watching his beloved first wife die a slow, painful death from disease for nine years. Like many, he reacted to this tragedy by shutting himself off from society and his family. He really is a depressed, lonely man who feels like he will never find happiness again. But, Megs's surprise arrival in London turns his world upside down in the best way. He slowly becomes attached to her and shows off his protective side. There are also moments late in the book where Godric shows how sexy and confident he can be as a hero.

I always believe that characters should go on some type of journey (physical or emotional) over the course of a book and both of the protagonists do that in Lord of Darkness. Megs and Godric have to come to terms with their grief and eventually strive to find someone else that they can love even after thinking, for years, that they never would. This book also focused on the journey they make as a couple by taking a marriage of convenience and making a true marriage of love.

Like most of the Maiden Lane books, this book deals with the Ghost of St. Giles, a mysterious 18th century "superhero" who takes care of the downtrodden in London's most impoverished neighborhoods. I have really enjoyed these plots and how they have been used to connect the different romances. Fans of the series will be excited to know more about the Ghost(s) and their history. Also, there is the appearance of a third Ghost who, I think, will make for an interesting hero down the road.

One of my favorite aspects of this series, and all of Ms. Hoyt's books, is the Georgian England setting. I absolutely adore the descriptions that appear from the clothes to the hair to the locations. It is such a refreshing change from the Regency era (though I do love those!) that I always feel like I'm stepping into a new and exciting world. The setting also allows Ms. Hoyt to showcase a mix of different classes which is a main focus of the Maiden Lane books. There are a variety of social issues discussed in the series such as child labor, prostitution, poverty, and education of the lower classes. And I think this along with everything else I mentioned in the review just helps push the book into a different realm of creativity and storytelling.

I am of fan of those who wear a mask....Batman, Phantom, Lone Ranger, Zorro, and yes, the Ghost of St. Giles. It is interesting in its historical setting. What I like about this is that the Ghost could possibly be a mantle handed down generation to generation. I like that three men have taken up this mantle. Each man had his own reason. Another thing I liked about this is that the couple are both grieving a lost love. Again each one has their own form of grief. This also shows that it is not time that heals a wound, but what we choose to do with that time that gives the chance for healing. However, I will confess that I enjoyed the previous installment, Thief of Shadows, more than this one. I am also looking forward to the next installment and learning about the whys of what made that hero decide to become the Ghost of St Giles and how he will cope with the heroine who no doubt already knows who he is based on our sneak peak.
I had an afterthought two days after posting this review. The hero of this installment is first introduced in the first book of the Maiden Lane series, Wicked Intentions. Now you don't have to read that book to enjoy this one, but it does give you insight into the hero of Lord of Darkness. In the first book he is the good friend of that book's hero. I wasn't going to read the whole Maiden Lane series. I jumped from the first book to the fourth because I was eager to read about the Ghost. With the sneak peak to the next book, I decided to read the second book. In that book there is more insight into the hero of book six coming out in October. I like good plot, romance, and really good and interesting characters. This series does that.

This book is a long-awaited (at least it felt like a long time to me) continuation of the Maiden Lane series. I have enjoyed all of the books so far, and I love the historical setting juxtaposing London's grimy, dangerous St. Giles with the aristocracy. All of the characters in the series have some connection to a home for foundling children located in St. Giles, and the "Ghost of St. Giles" plays a role in all as well. In the last two books, including this one, we meet the men behind the mask. These men dress up as harlequins, carry swords and move acrobatically through the rooftops and alleyways of St. Giles protecting the innocent and fighting crime. If you have read the whole series yet, I envy you and encourage you to do so, though it is not entirely necessary to enjoy each installment.
In the Lord of Darkness, we learn that there is more than one Ghost. Godric St. John lost his beloved wife after a long illness and has been manipulated/blackmailed into marrying Lady Margaret Redding, sister of the hero of an earlier book in the series. Margaret's brother knows that Godric is the Ghost, and threatens to reveal his identity if he does not marry Lady Margaret, or Megs, who is pregnant with the child of a man recently found murdered in St. Giles. The book begins two years later, after the forced wedding. We learn that Megs miscarried soon after and retire to the country. Godric, meanwhile, has continue to dress up as the Ghost and live a solitary, lonely existence in a crumbling mansion in London.
In my excitement about the new book, I regularly visited the author's website, where I read the letters that Megs and Godric had begun to write to one another during the time of their separation. Check those out before you begin the book, they are like a bonus prologue.
Both Godric and Megs have lost the love of their life and both doubt whether they will ever love again. Complicating matters, Megs believes that the Ghost of St. Giles murdered her lover, and she wants to seek revenge on the Ghost. She, of course, does not know that Godric is the Ghost. She returns to London to be reunited with her husband, and consummate the marriage in hopes of getting pregnant again, as well as to seek her revenge.
Godric's world is turned upside down when Megs arrives, and he is forced to confront the loneliness of his existence, and how he has pushed away those who would care for him. Megs eventually learns that Godric is the Ghost, and she quickly believes that he was not the murderer, but is still hellbent on finding the true murderer.
Through the course of the book, Megs and Godric have to confront their own pasts and let them go. They feel guilt, fear and excitement at a future without continuously grieving for their lost loves. Eventually, they are able to move fully into the future, solve all of the mysteries, and because this is romance, live happily ever after.
My only real criticism is that based on certain things that were said in the last book, I believed that Megs' lover had been a bad guy, who she was lucky to be rid of, but that did not appear to be the case. I kept waiting for it to come up, but it appears from this book that he was an innocent victim. I do get angry with characters who insist on taking unnecessary and extreme risks with their physical safety, and I felt that both Megs and Godric did that a few times in this book. Not quite TSTL, but getting into that territory.

3.0 out of 5 stars I adored Godric, but Megs was very selfish.
Reviewed in the Netherlands on January 17, 2025
I absolutely loved Godric, he was so sweet and kind (my three stars are for him), but did have some very mixed feelings regarding Megs. I honestly thought she was very selfish and fickle.
She decided she wanted a baby at all costs, but insisted that things only could be done the way SHE wanted, namely as clinically as possible. At no point did she question how humiliating and heartbreaking this must have been for Godric, who in fact wished to remain faithful to the memory of his beloved wife Clara as well and did this solely to make Megs happy. Megs told Lazarus at one point that she had to compete with the ghost of Clara, while the ghost of Roger was even much more prominent and made her statement very much out of place and hypocritical. She was so obsessed with her former lover Roger, whom she had only had known for a few months. It seemed she was just taking, taking, taking. Throughout the story she was whining all the time how much she loved Roger, that he was her one and only true love....
In the end, she manipulated Godric, as it were, to go after Roger's killer, but then was angry with him afterwards for doing so. The fact that Megs kept pining for Roger throughout the whole story took away a lot from the romance for me. Megs declaration of love at the end was not very credible and just didn't do anything to me. Frankly, I thought that Godric deserved (someone) better.
I do like how throughout each story we are always shown some sprinkles regarding the next story. I am already very much looking forward to the story of Artemis. I already got tears in my eyes from reading that scene with her twin brother in Bedlam. By the way, that scene reminded me of The Silence of The Lambs when Clarice goes to see Hannibal Lector in prison for the first time.

This entire series is wonderful. Each are well written so you just fall smoothly into 1700s London and stay there for the duration. The characterisation is great so you feel for and worry about and urge the protagonists on as their story unfolds. The Storylines of each book in the series are both stand-alone and beautifully entwined with each other. And goodness me the lovemaking is rousingly described! I’d recommend these books to anyone who enjoys a satisfying tale and sympathetic characters with their erotic moments. I’m off to buy the next one...
