The Pressure's Off: There's a New Way to Live Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 317 ratings

“This book makes a very important statement about how to live the Christian life. It takes the Christian beyond the obstacles and disappointments and, above all, beyond the age-old enemy of self straight into the arms of grace. Once there, the pressure is off. A real worthwhile read.”
—FRANK RETIEF, Presiding Bishop, Church of England in South Africa

You can stop trying to get everything right.

Is the pressure getting to you? Do you try to make everything work, only to find that your best efforts are largely ineffective?

Christians have unknowingly embraced two errors: that following the rules guarantees a good life, and that God is important because He dispenses blessings. When God’s blessings seem to taper off and when life doesn’t work out, people take it upon themselves to make things work. And that creates pressure that we are all too familiar with.

In
The Pressure’s Off, best-selling author and counselor Larry Crabb introduces you to the New Way of living. God does not guarantee ease or convenience—or even a good outcome as the result of your obedience. But he does promise himself, no matter what the circumstances of your life.

When you seek God and nothing else, the pressure truly is off you.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Expectations have never been higher. Without the most recognizable markers of success, many non-Christians and Christians alike feel dissatisfaction and a vague discontent with life. They seek after blessings and believe that the good life comes to those who follow the rules. Not necessarily so, states Crabb (Finding God), who has had his own trouble with such "linear" thinking. Crabb details how this behavior-leads-to-blessings theology has become endemic within the church today. This "Law of Linearity" no longer holds true, he claims. Instead, Christians can embrace the "Law of Liberty," discovering the embrace of God without the pressure to perform. For openers, Crabb lays the groundwork for his passionate plea to forsake restraints that bind. Far and above any blessing God may give, he says, Christians' most urgent need is for the Father himself. Crabb soberly describes how weary this generation of Christ's followers has become, and how far, to their own shame, they've distanced themselves from God's plan for humanity. While there's no simple cure for the rampant decay that results from self-centeredness, Crabb notes that genuine seekers can be recognized by where they expend their energies. Crabb, who at times reads as self-deprecating, offers statements that are catchy and thought-provoking but not gimmicky: "Only the mature value the blessing of presence over the blessing of presents." Crabb's message resonates convincingly, giving Christian readers who have embraced the gospel of good behavior some fresh food for thought. (Mar.)Forecast: Crabb has a solid sales record in the CBA, a market that will likely welcome this refreshing title. WaterBrook will simultaneously release a workbook for individual and group study.

Praise for The Pressure's Off

“If, like me, you see blessing-centeredness rather than God-centeredness as a great weakness of American evangelicalism, you will hail this exploration of the freedom and joy of grace as timely therapy, a word in season that we all needed. May it be widely read and thoroughly digested.”
—J. I. PACKER, theologian and author of Knowing God

“The evangelical church, choking under a pervasive legalism/moralism that suffocates the human spirit, finds a powerful voice for freedom in Larry Crabb. Writing from the inside out, he presents a vibrant way of living with
passion and without pressure.”
—BRENNANMANNING, author of Ruthless Trust

“C. S. Lewis wrote about prosperity knitting us to this world, and while we are seeking our place in the world, the world is actually finding its place in us. Dr. Larry Crabb has constructed a compelling narrative that shows how we have imprisoned ourselves by using the world’s ways to ‘get something from God,’ instead of appropriating God’s way to receive something from Him.”
—CAL THOMAS, syndicated columnist and author

“Dr. Crabb not only gives us a clear mandate to celebrate Christian freedom, he also is our accompanist and exemplar on the Way of Freedom. You know he has walked that way with you. A remarkably personal message.”
—JAMES M. HOUSTON, Chancellor Emeritus and professor of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

“At last we have a book that confronts contemporary Christian culture with its increasing tendency to be taken up with blessings more than the Blesser. I doubt whether anything Larry has ever written, or may write in the future, will contribute more powerfully to the needs of modern-day Christians than
The Pressure’s Off.”
—SELWYN HUGHES, director of the Center for World Revival and author of Every Day with Jesus devotional

This is not an academic book on theology or counseling. In it, Crabb provides a rather transparent look into his own journey through an important transformation process in an attempt to help us grasp what he found out. He explains how we can insidiously come to the point of thinking we are following, and even serving God when we are really attempting to manipulate God. Sounds like a simple concept to intellectually grasp, but I found the varied and personable ways Larry communicates were necessary for me to fully process what he was talking about so I came to really see how much pressure I have put myself under, and perhaps why some things have not worked out the way I thought they should. Larry's admonitions remind me of Jesus' critique of the Ephesian church: "But this you have abandoned, your first love." Since I feel God used this book to shift the way I hold my life in a very positive way, I recommend it to all.

I'm only halfway done with the book, but when I pick it up it's difficult to put down. Being shown by God that I am incapable of grasping spiritual, life-changing truth with my mind, I can't help but pray before reading anything if I expect God to speak. In doing so, God has revealed to me just how much I was relying on principles in place of knowing Christ Himself. In my quest for God, I have even tried to use "principles" and "techniques" in order to draw near to Him, thinking by some stretch that the more I did right, the closer I could get to Him. How ridiculous! We are so evil. The blood of Christ is the only thing that brings us to and opens the door to God. It's amazing how far we've fallen. We seek external blessing and comfort without even realizing it. When we do seek the right thing (God) we try to do it by our own merit or on our own account. Lord forgive us.

I'm also amazed how much churches teach the path of blessing...even well meaning churches. How many churches are teaching Old Testament doctrine and wondering why they have to conjure up some superficial version of the Spirit of God's manifestation? Is not the Spirit of God's greatest manifestation His very fruit...found only by an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ? May His presence be our goal and contentment therein, whether circumstances are good or bad. He is enough...that is His promise. Dr. Crabb's book is highly recommended and the only book I have ever recommended on Amazon, albeit I've read plenty. Don't hesitate to pick up a copy of this piece of divine intervention in our weary world. It's the freshness that many are looking elsewhere to find and many authors are compromising Biblical truth in order to grasp. To those who think the Christian life is about getting what we want, they're right. Many just haven't realized or accepted the fact that what they truly want is God.

What an amazing book, great content! I recommend it.

I recommend this book to everyone who feels like they are under pressure to perform and achieve. The book presents the New Covenant of the Bible in clear terms and makes the distinction between the New and the Old unmistakably. The author unfolds the differences between the New Way (life under the New Covenant) and the Old Way (life under the Old Covenant). He shows how often we are drawn to the old ways because they represent things we can "do" and "achieve" in our own energy. The New Way can only be entered into by faith and all the "doing" has been done already by God Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, the Son. The New Way relieves us of the pressure to achieve, perform and do in order to uphold our part of the covenant. This book has been very helpful to me in understanding the nature of my relationship to God under the New Covenant, and has allowed me to see how I've appropriated the Old Ways into my life because it makes me feel like I'm "doing" something to add to the New Covenant relationship. But, the pressures off under the New Covenant. I can learn to enjoy this new life without the pressures to perform according to the Old Covenant, which has passed away. I appreciate this book very much. May Grace and Mercy abound more and more.

I really like Crabb's perspective on life. In this book, he explains how he's arrived at the conclusion that life isn't about performing to meet someone's expectations. In his and in my case, that would be God's expectations.

He argues convincingly that when we want God's blessings more than we want God, those blessings become our god and we set ourselves up for profound disappointment.

(Admittedly, I didn't get all the way through the book because my wife took it, read it, and gave it to my sister to read before I could get it back.)

This could be one of Crabb's most powerful contributions to personal spiritual formation, but because he personally grappling with his main point as he writes, it's a little challenging to access, although it makes the reading much more intimate.

I highly recommend this book!

Literally life changing read for me. I have re read it 3+ times now, soaking in the idea of wanting the Lord more than wanting to have things go my way. I was under the impression that if I lived a morally strong life it was God's end of the bargain to give me things I wanted. Now, my mind is slowly shifting to see that what I really want most out of this life is to experience the sweet presence of my Savior. That can be done in the midst of divorce, bankruptcy, illness, injustices and all the other horrible things this world can offer. I no longer fear failure, homelessness or cancer because I can have all I need for a fulfilled life with Jesus as my first-place passion. Thank you Dr. Crabb for bringing a strong message and pointing to Him as the author.

This book is great. Larry Crabb presents a different “way” of approaching life and God, one that is rooted in relationship with him as opposed to seeing Him as a means to living out of our fleshly desires. This was a helpful read as it highlighted (very practical) some ways to move away from this “old way” and into a life of freedom empowered by the Holy Spirit.
