Flat-Out Love Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 6,152 ratings

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy.

So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagle likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves.

Complicated? Awkward? Completely.

But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary. Julie wasn’t supposed to be important to the Watkins family, or to fall in love with one of the brothers. Especially the one she’s never quite met. But what does that really matter? Finn gets her, like no one ever has before. They have connection.

But here’s the thing about love, in all its twisty, bumpy permutations—it always throws you a few curves. And no one ever escapes unscathed.

I should say this book should have been named FLAT OUT CRAZY But AMAZING!!

"Normal people can become very annoying if put in annoying situations."

This book gave me the ultimate book boner with all the psychological aspects that were present.
As a future counselor I sorta guessed from the very beginning what happened BUT the ultimate test with any author is even if you SUSPECT/GUESS/KNOW what is going to happen and they are still able to make you portray the emotions they wanted you to experience, then they are an A+ author. And Jessica Park did that and more.
I seriously had to put the book down and cry in a corner for a minute to get over all the heartbreak and emotions that I was feeling. Ok maybe it was my bed and not a corner but you get the point.
This book made me FEEL and I came out on the other side in a mixed bag of emotions.

    Just call me emotionally unstable!!

This book starts off with Julie, who is just starting college and she gets ripped off by an online ad for a room for rent. Not only is there not a room for rent but she also lost a lot of money in the process. Julie calls her mother and her mother contacts an old college roommate that offers Julie a room to stay in while she is at school.
This is where she meets the ever-quirky Watkins family.
I loved each member of the family because of their uniqueness, especially the old Celeste and the new one that was present by the end of the book.
Celeste was carrying around a cardboard cutout of her older brother Finn because he was away from home and the whole family missed him terribly. Flat Finn, which he was appropriately named, went everywhere Celeste went in the home. She was a hermit, only staying confined in the walls of her home while being socially awkward at school. The psychology student in me was naming all kinds of scenarios that happened with Celeste to make her that attached to her FF because it wasn't normal and it drove me crazy that the Watkins family refused to not only talk about the huge elephant in the room but to also ignore how awkward Celeste was. It wasn't until Julie started to work with Celeste that you started to see a change in Celeste. She started acting like a quirky-"normal" teenager like the other girls in her school. It both terrified and thrilled the Watkins family.

Julie also spent a lot of time with Matt and online Finn. Since Finn traveled all over the world the only communication he had was through the internet. You begin to see a little love triangle type thing form between them and you are not only falling in love with the nerdy Matt but also the adventurous Finn.

Matt was fun, creative, smart, driven, determined, but also had a humorous and sweet side. The banter between Julie and Matt was funny, flirty and borderline explosive. When they argued it was still funny and even if Julie was aiming more towards Finn, I felt that she belonged to Matt!

"I'm guessing by the suitcases that you must be Julie? Or else I'm about to kidnap the wrong girl."

Finn was adventurous, sweet, kind, and was there to give Julie advice when she needed it the most. But he couldn't physically be there for her since he traveled all over the world and never came home, the only communication was through FB and emails so while Julie felt emotionally attached to Finn, she couldn't be physically attached.

The ending is what I figured out from the very beginning but I didn't know all the details to what happened and the who, what, where, how, when etc so when it finally came time for the big plot twist I was OH MY GOSHING and crying buckets. The reveal wasn't what made it emotional it was the pain and sorrow that was depicted that made me weep.
    I was a goner!

But I was also disappointed in the very end as well. Of course I have not read Flat-Out-Matt yet so I might get more information in that book and will have to change this review. But I wanted to find out more about Julie and her father's relationship and her mom kind of dropped off after being a big part of it in the beginning of the book. Also we never figured out what her major was going to be. Lastly, the ending with Matt and Julie was kind of anticlimactic, I thought it needed to be more exciting because of everything that happened but thats just me and it didn't deter from the story in any way and I still loved it! It was just little things but it left me wanting more!!
Then again I LOVED the characters so much that I probably would have wanted more no matter what!

I give this book a 4.5/5 and I hope every ONE of you LOVE this book as much as I did

    Snippets from the book:

"I see a maniacal-looking guy with brightly colored candy in one hand, and he's waving a bloody sickle with the other. Oh! He's beckoning me to the car. This must be my ride."

"But that's what love does to you. Gut-wrenching, overpowering, crushing, fulfilling, complex, bring-you-to-your-knees love."

"The cockroaches are a nice bonus. I've always wanted to live with animals. And I can make extra money working as a hooker. Those girls outside looked really friendly, and I'm sure they'd take me under their wing and teach me the tricks of the trade. Pardon the pun."

I really enjoyed reading this book because it was unlike any other book that I have read to date. At first, I was unsure if I was going to enjoy it, since the first few chapters were a bit slow but I kept on reading and I am glad that I did! Once I had finished the book it stayed with me and was constantly on my mind for a few days. I kept thinking back on clues I missed or assumptions I made along the way, which made me go back through the book and re-read parts to see it in a different light once all the twists and turns had been unveiled.

Flat-Out Love is romantic, sad, mysterious, witty and quirky. This book is very well written and has a unique storyline. Flat-Out Love is an epic love story which blossoms through social-media platforms we have available to us today, such as Facebook. Jessica Parks did a fantastic job of creating romantic tension and chemistry throughout the book through her expressions of cyber communication. This somewhat eased the avid romance reader's desire for physical chemistry that wasn't delivered until the end of the book, and I must admit I would have been happy with a little more after all the attraction that was created between these two characters!

While I don't want to reveal too much about the plot, I will just explain that this story is about a girl named Julie Seagle, from Ohio who moved to Boston to start her freshman year at collage only to find out that the accommodation she had arranged through Craigslist had been a hoax. Her mum ends up contacting her long lost friend from college, Erin Watkins, and arranges for Julie to stay with Erin and her family. Once Julie meets the family, it is clear that there is something majorly wrong, especially with Erin's daughter Celeste. Celeste is thirteen and is extremely intelligent but lacks interpersonal and social skills. She is extremely attached to her older brother Finn, who has left home on a travelling adventure. What Julie finds the most strange is that the family goes along with Celeste's attachment to Finn like it is normal for her to be that way. Julie finds herself on a mission to discover what happened to Celeste to cause this attachment, but with Celeste's Dad constantly travelling for work, her Mum who is a workaholic and her brother Matt who is very protective and private regarding his family and particularly Celeste, the only other person she can try and get answers from is Finn. Through her communications with Finn, a relationship blossoms and Julie finds herself falling in love. What she discovers through her time with this very dysfunctional family, who are desperately trying to keep it together by wearing a mask of normality, is that each family member is battling their own turmoil and guilt. As it would turn out, Julie is exactly what this family needs to come together again and breathe and be happy!

Thinking about this story, I believe Jessica Park wrote a very clever, heartwarming book that is full of meaning. I got emotionally involved with each and every one of these characters in a way I hadn't anticipated, maybe because the situation is so plausible for any modern family, that I could relate to these characters on different levels and understand what they were going through. I was elated that the Watkins family found a light at the end of the tunnel which guided them towards a happy ending.

Definitely give this book a read, you will be pleasantly surprised by how much you will enjoy going on a journey of self-discovery with these characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Der Realismus einer Pappfigur
Reviewed in Germany on October 1, 2014
Ich wollte unbedingt wissen, was dahinter steckt.

This book is a must read for anyone with a heart. It is a beautifully written touching story of a dysfunctional family that helps out an old family friends daughter who in turns is the saviour they didn't know they needed. The characters will stay with you long after you have finished and we are lucky enough to have two follow up books with Flat Out Matt and Flat Out Celeste..

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 25, 2012
I've been very lucky recently, finding books that have captivated me and that I have not been able to put down and while "Flat Out Love" also did those things (finished it in less than a day), I must say, there was something special about this one.

I didn't guess the "big secret" until the reveal and personally, I'm glad I didn't - was perfect excuse to go back and read it again now being in the know! That said, I certainly don't think that if you do work it out, that you'll be disappointed as other reviewers have all agreed before me. This book is beautifully written and I highly doubt anything could take away from it.

The story itself is very funny, plus it's heart-warming, heart-breaking, witty and fantastic. The facebook messages and status' are very funny and there are pure laugh out loud moments within the main story. In my opinion, Jessica Park has done quite an incredible thing to have something that made me laugh like an idiot, touch my heart and bring tears to my eyes in 400 pages (paperback says 400).

My only niggle would be that there are a couple of times that she's sort of skipped over BUT that said, and yes, even though I've just said that, I feel the need to defend the book - IF every book contained every little moment of the story then you'd end up with something that makes the bible look like a short story SO whilst I'd have liked to know what Julie did at christmas for example, the fact I don't does not detract from the story. Her ridiculously funny drunken phonecall to Matt well makes up for it on new years eve.

The characters are all great and although it might be a very strange thing to say, especially for those who have read the book, I loved them all and thought they were a beautiful family, during the book, no, of course not - they are very dysfunctional and a group of individuals, not a family, but by the end, you get a real sense that it's working out and you can (or I can anyway) really see the potential there. So much so that yes, of course I was disappointed that I'd reached the end but I was happy with the ending. It is very fitting and if there is ever a sequel then that'd be fantastic, if there isn't, well, ok.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, just fantastic and I'm faily confident that the vast majority of people will not be disappointed.
