The Blossoms Meet the Vulture Lady (The Blossom Family Books Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

An entertaining adventure in the Newbery Medal–winning author’s series starring “a lively, likable family” (School Library Journal).

Junior Blossom has set out to test his brand-new invention, a coyote trap. How on earth does he end up lost in a cave with Mad Mary, a.k.a. “the Vulture Lady,” while his family attempts to find him in this suspenseful and sidesplitting Blossom Family sequel.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7 Mad Mary, who lives in a cave and collects her meat from the highway, rescues Junior Blossom from a cage and takes him home to keep him safe when she thinks that he has been abused. Actually, Junior had made that cage himself, hoping to trap a coyote and win a reward. His disappearance brings out his entire family (introduced in The Not-Just-Anybody Family Delacorte, 1986), and each one's personality, fears, and needs is highlighted during the search. This is a lively, likable family, handled lightly but surely by an author known for her abiltiy to write believable dialogue and present the desires of her characters with humor and understanding. Mad Mary's history, sketched throughout the story, brings readers more and more into contact with an independent, determined woman who has created a workable life for herself. If some would argue that mental illness rather than independence drove her to the cage, then at least her illness is that of a genuinely caring person bewildered by the world of man. This is a short book, moving from one character to another and back again in a way that may confuse less sophisticated readers. The situation isn't as dramatic as in The Not-Just-Anybody Family , and the action is more diffused through the characters' internal lives. Yet thoughtful readers will find the story to be satisfying, and Mary and Junior's friendship heartwarming. Sara Miller, White Plains Public Library, N.Y.

Great story for imaginative kids!

This unusual story comes right in the middle of the Not-Just-Anybody series. Some of the other titles are funnier (The Not-Just-Anybody Family) and some are even more touching (Wanted: Mud Blossom), but none is more effective in depicting friendship and expanding our sympathies outward.
Junior makes a most unusual friend--a homeless woman whose use for vultures I won't even mention. The way we come to appreciate her and see that everybody IS somebody is done subtly and gracefully.
It's a great read-aloud. Byars is a master and this series is her masterpiece.

Byars was one of my all-time favourite authors as a kid and I've continued to read her work ever since. The Blossom series is one of my favourites. Book 1 was absolutely hilarious and while this book has its funny moments it is more of a poignant story. Jr. is up to his usual inventing and creating; this time building a coyote trap so he can win the capture reward money. Only things don't go as planned and Jr. ends up capturing two pitiful creatures, but no coyote. Jr. meets Mary Cantrell, better known as the Vulture Lady, and even better know in town as Mad Mary, a possible witch. At first terrified of her, he soon befriends her and finds she is a gentle soul. The books main theme is friendship, blooming and growing it, this involves Ralphie and Maggie as well, and poor Vern who realizes he doesn't have any friends outside of the family. It also deals in a subtle way with prejudice and judging people on the way they dress and behave without bothering to know anything about them as a person. A good fun book and sequel to The Not-Just-Anybody Family. Not as funny though and contains some childhood practices of the time that wouldn't be exactly advisable for 21st century kids to participate in because of the question of safety in today's world. Though certainly a nostalgic look back at a more simpler, innocent way of life. A great series!
