About the Author

James Maxwell grew up in the scenic Bay of Islands, New Zealand, and was educated in Australia. Devouring fantasy and science-fiction classics from an early age, his love for books translated to a passion for writing, which he began at the age of eleven.

Inspired by the natural beauty around him but also by a strong interest in history, he decided in his twenties to see the world. He relocated to London and then to Thailand, Mexico, Austria, and Malta, developing a lifelong obsession with travel. It was while living in Thailand that he seriously took up writing again, producing his first full-length novel, Enchantress, the first of four titles in his internationally bestselling Evermen Saga.

When he isn't writing or traveling, James enjoys sailing, snowboarding, classical guitar, and French cooking.

If you enjoyed the first book, you'll definitely want to keep reading. I can be a bit critical, but was not disappointed at all.

As with the first story, a great page-turning saga one gets immersed in. Some of the flaws in the first book were remedied here, namely the author does a much better job of 'showing' the story to the reader, rather than 'telling'. The writing has improved over what was already a good attempt in the first book. Myro's character is still developing and a reasonably sympathetic protagonist. As others have said, there is a bit of sex in the book. I don't think it was overdone, but I do feel, unlike in the first book, there was less reader involvement in some (but not all) of these scenes several of which felt forced. The tenor of the book is pretty dark throughout most of the pages, with little humor to liven things up. Given the circumstances (jumping around from multiple wars to concentration camps), it was appropriate, but just something to be aware of.

Overall, great continuation of the series and I look forward to reading the 3rd installment.

    Some minor criticisms:
-There is a bit of 'super'hero luck among the main characters, most of whom are able to conduct themselves through rather extraordinary circumstances unscathed
-Ella's character is just as flighty and immature as in the first book. She's more like a force of nature than a real woman in some respects. Just too whimsical in all aspects of her life to relate too. While she is a likable character, she just doesn't feel real for some reason.
-Clearly Amber is placed in a difficult position. I felt the writing was fine here - however, there are some discrepancies in the book regarding her actions in the concentration camp. I won't say much as I don't want to introduce spoilers here. But author probably needs to critically review this section again.

This book builds upon the first book (obviously), but has less lulls. It is still very descriptive and detailed, but has more action and multiple storylines going on that link up at times. As always, it ends with some closure but also includes something that makes you want to continue the series (which I did right away). I enjoyed this book more than the first book and am even more invested in the story.

I liked the first book but had some major problems with Miro's portion of the story and to be honest, was just kind of bored at the end. So I wasn't very excited to start book two. This book is better in every way than the first. Even Miro became much more interesting this time around!

The world really opens up this time. I found the expanding mythology really adds something here. It really starts to have a massive scale this time. While still hold onto the smaller moments that help with character development.

My favorite thing about book two is how it kept sidestepping my expectations. There were many times I thought I knew what the author was doing. I read a lot of fantasy so this happens with to many novels in this genre. Yet this book surprised me. In this book he introduces a new section of people. I immediately thought I knew what their purpose was. Yet the author exceeded my expectations and provided something that felt more real. Just better all the way around.

My only complaints this time around is the convenient way in which the deep mythology of the series is conveyed. It feels like an info dump every time it happens. I will add that the mythology works and does help with the over arching story. Still it always felt obvious that big information was coming. It usually involves someone in the know who sits everyone down and just tells them all that is going on. It is always more satisfying for the characters to come to this information because of something they do where it feels natural.

I really did like this one! I will add I am about half way through the third book right now and that is even better than one and two! This is a very good series that seems to get better with each book!

The Hidden Relic is the second book in James Maxwell’s “Evermen Saga”. This one is set right after the events of book one. The Primate was dealt a blow in his plan to take over with his black army, but he is not finished. He goes north to enlist the help of a people who were exiled long ago because of their power of re-animation of the dead. Along with their army’s strength, and their knowledge of how to extract essence from human bodies, the Primate plans to make another attempt at a worldwide reign. He has another trick up his sleeve as well. He has stumbled upon a book left by the Evermen and it tells of a source of power, a weapon, that could be the deciding factor in the war. The only question is can he find it before the Akari realize they’ve been double crossed?
On the other side, Miro, Ella, Killian, and Amber each must make their own sacrifices and play their own roles if they are to stop the Primate before all is lost.

This book is much like the first one in that the pacing is quick, the world building is very solid, and the characters are well developed (and continue to develop throughout the story). These are the first books that I’ve read from Maxwell, but I can certainly see why he’s such a popular author. Both of these first two books have been extremely well done. There is a circumstance or situation here or there that was settled a little too conveniently or a solution that presented itself at just the right moment, but that’s forgivable considering how good the rest of the story is. Two books in, I wouldn’t call the Evermen Saga a masterwork, but I would say that it’s certainly been a fun ride that is hard to put down. With this one Maxwell has guaranteed that I’ll finish the series and in all likelihood, read his other series as well. Another great effort and most definitely worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un deuxième tome aussi échevelé que le premier
Reviewed in France on December 2, 2014
Bonheur!
