Calla has lead a life without the love of a family losing her mother at a young age. Her father arranges a marriage for the young girl to a man twice her age whose love in life is gambling. Calla develops amazing survival instincts and skills that play out well all be it challenging in her life. Young Rebbie enters her life as a stranger who she sees as the only way to survive her marriage. Her husband threatens to kill Calla if she fails to produce him as heir.
Character development in Ms. Sinclair's books is always one of my favorite parts of reading her stories. She transports the reader to another time and place adding to the depth of the reading experience. Well done! I look forward to the next adventure.
Rebbie was very likable, and was so good to Calla. He rescued her a number of times, risking his own life -- even when he was angry at her for lying to him. I was glad, though, when he forgave her and they found their HEA.
I liked Calla, but thought it was wrong of her not to tell Rebbie the truth as soon as she met him again. I get that she was afraid of what he or his father might do, but he deserved to know he had a son. I did think her history, and why she had originally deceived Rebbie, was so very sad. But from what I've read, many women of that time period were treated badly -- and were often abused, raped, or even murdered by their husbands.
I liked that Rebbie, his father, and his friends willingly risked their lives to protect/rescue Calla. In all of the books in this series, the protectiveness of the male characters is one of the things I have liked most about them. They are always willing to rescue anyone in danger, especially vulnerable women.
It bothered me that the bad guy in this story was just so thoroughly evil. He had absolutely no redeeming qualities at all.
My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Wow! Perfect Story! Rebbie MacInnis is one delicious Rebel. Through each book in this series I have loved every little tid bit of information about him and so longed for his story and for him to find his true love and not get stuck with some childish spoiled chit that his father always tried to set him up with.
Well the author's brilliant and visionary writing doesn't disappoint. I literally couldn't put the book down. From page one to the end I stayed completely captivated.
Rebbie as we all know has always been one handsome highlander who loves his freedom and loves the Highland life verses living in the city. So when I read the description of him decked out in the Highland garb of Kilt and Sword and not his ordinary britches I felt myself swooning with a chill going down my spine thinking about his sexy muscular thighs as he rode upon his magnificent horse along with visualizing what was beneath that Plaid Kilt. LOL
But the story is more than about a sexy Highlander. The author gives us a little background into Rebbie's youthful years and how one unforgettable night with one Lass stayed forever sketched into his heart and soul.
Rebbie and Calla's story is beautiful. Nether of them ever expected to see each other again after their one night of memorable bliss but Faith always has its way with lives and 6 years later during one of Rebbie's Father's many attempts at trying to fix him up with one of his friends daughters, his rebellious games of hightailing it out of there is halted once he gets one look at the girl's chaperon and realizes she's the woman he hasn't been able to get out of his head for many years.
Calla is a very strong willed lady who I instantly loved. Like Rebbie, she never forgot her night with him and for the last 6 years he remained in her dreams and fantasies - it was the only thing that kept her sanity besides the secret of having Rebbie's child. Her only regret is that she had to lie in order to protect herself and her son from her ruthless and cruel husband her father had arranged for her. Her whole background just astonished me, how her father was and how her husband treated her just blew my mind and I wished I could of jumped in the book and ended their lives for her. LOL
On a special note, I have to say I loved this fierce highlanders gentleness towards Calla and how not just Rebbie but all the Highlander's regarded Calla's son. It about made me cry when Rebbie first lays eyes on his son and he instantly knows. So Touching!
I felt the character's chemistry, how much passion they had for each other, how much they loved life and their freedom of choice, and how they always wanted to do the honorable thing even though it put their lives at risk at times, but most important is that they didn't want just a marriage to anyone, they wanted to marry for love and not because it was wealth gaining. The Heat Level 3 Flames.
Overall, this is one excellent story full of adventure, suspense, and excitement. I especially loved all the other character's from the other books being included in the story. It was neat to see them with their children. It was just awesome to see Rebbie finally get the woman of his dreams and Calla the man of hers.
I highly recommend this historical romance to all readers. I look forward to reading more of Vonda Sinclair's work.

But his father has other plans for Rebbie and they include marriage for his handsome, powerful, fun-loving son.
Witty, funny, loyal and brave, Rebbie is forced into a marriage contract he does not want. But when he meets the young, spoilt lass, her companion is the beautiful young woman who haunts his dreams, after a chance meeting six years ago, which included one of the best nights of his life, full of passion and desire.
Lady Calla Ferguson, companion to Rebbie's betrothed, is penniless and forced to seek employment to keep a particularly dangerous wolf from her door.
She immediately recognises Rebbie, never expecting to see him again, and she holds a secret that she never thought to share, especially with Rebbie, the man who never left her dreams either.
This is a fabulously haunting adventure. Full of passion, emotion and humour. Vonda Sinclair's writing has you gripped from the very first word to the last. It is such a romantic and absorbing tale, written as only Vonda can.
Outstanding!
I'm quite certain that I'm not the only fan of this series that is absolutely delighted that the gorgeous, emotionally deep, fun loving and loyal friend, Rebbie, has finalIy found someone that rocks his world! This is a truly touching love story, with the adventure, humor and hot romance that we've come to expect from talented author, Vonda Sinclair. I've read Calla & Rebbie's story twice now and it's just as good the second time around. All of Vonda's books are definitely on my re-read shelf!
