- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2012I'm generally not a fan of the intrigue genre. Have to say I wasn't even expecting to like this book that much when I downloaded it. I personally don't like the look of cover much, so I almost didn't get it.
I'm glad to say that I didn't judge this book by it's cover, since it turned out to be one of the best stories I've read in a long time. I loved the character development, the two main characters especially came across as very real, with very human reactions to the events in the story. I loved the plot and was kept interested all the way through. In fact, I barely put it down until I was done.
I'm really looking forward to reading more by B.A. Morton.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2013Several reviewers have noted the inconsistencies in language and said that they disliked that a New York City cop sounded British. I must admit I didn't even notice. Perhaps it's because I lived on an island in the Caribbean, a British Crown Colony, where there were people of many nationalities speaking various types and styles of English and using each other's slang interchangeably. I will read Molly Brown, the next book by this author, for sure !
As for the story itself, I found it filled with mystery, intrigue, romance. Loved the ending !
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2016Very good story. I hated to put it down. The plot had lots of twists and surprises and kept me wondering about where things were going. I enjoyed the writing and the few little "Britishisms" that crept in. There were a few laugh-out-loud lines to lighten the mood. I recommend Mrs. Jones and will look for other books by B A Morton.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2013Tommy Connelly at first glance seems to be just the kind of handsome sap that a scheming woman can use. His initial characterization reminds me of Kathleen Turner meeting William Hurt in Body Hurt: "You're not too smart, are you?" she says. "I like that in a man."
Mrs. Jones is less maliciously scheming; the harm she intends is not for Tommy Donnelly.
Donnelly makes a good noir detective; pig-headed, he can take a licking and keep on ticking, and, in the end, he has a few tricks up his own sleeve as well.
I agree with the praise and the negative criticism for this novel. There are jarring instances when Tommy uses British slang; there are irritating typos.
There is good chemistry between Connelly and Mrs. Jones. The plot has unexpected twists and turns; some character development does not sufficiently explain behavior, especially in the case of the villain. To say more would require a spoiler alert, and those don't work for me.
This was a free download, and it was worth every penny.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2013This is an entertaining book, characters are fleshed out really well, but there are more than a few unexplained holes in the story. If you are able to just read the book without applying common sense, then it is entertaining. Plot does have multiple twist, and a great ending so I'd give it 4 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2014Tracing a 911 call to Apartment 13A, Detective Connell investigates hit and run scene with a witness he’d rather like to know better. A witness who may just be a lot younger than her ID claims. Clever dialogue makes this opening scene a page-turner and just like Connell, I find anything odd intriguing. What he can’t figure out is why Mrs. Jones is living in this apartment. Why such a dangerous part of town? Connell is determined there is something she’s not telling him, something that sets the alarm bells ringing. And he’s determined to keep her close at hand. This case is not a straightforward one and, in many detective novels, they never are. But there’s a magic to this book that doesn’t let up and that’s what kept me reading until the end.
I want to know who Mrs. Jones is. Why she’s so vulnerable. And where is Mr. Jones? I like Connell . . . very much. There’s a unique stoicism to him that doesn’t fit the stereotype. His character is more realistic in my view, more to resonate with. In fact, there’s nothing to pigeon-hole these characters at all. What strikes me as unusual is Morton’s way of communicating their inner-workings. Effortless is the word, much like her other novels which portray unusual people in exceptional situations. There’s a sharp twist to these and a certain residue that sticks to the skin long after the last page. Five stars for a gripping, sensual ride. Straight to the point. No holds barred.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2012As an avid reader of detective novels I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Quite a few unexpected twists and turns. Romantic but not sickly sweet. Loved the characters. Good descributions of people and places. Made you think you were actually there. The ending was quite surprising given the moral rectitude of the American detective. Look forward to a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never quite what you expect
This is a great crime story. From the first page the reader gets caught up in the lives of two likeable, but perhaps rather unpredictable people, and the story chases off around New York and out into the wilds of New York State. I was hooked, rooting for the cop and fearing for the girl. I could 'see' each scene, feel the tension and would have read all night through if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page turner
An excellent page turner that twists and turns and you feel you are as ignorant as to what's going on as the main character. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
This is a fabulous story, with an engaging cast of characters, that keeps you guessing to the last page.
The King of Charm, Detective Tommy Connell is duty bound to serve and protect the beguiling Englishwoman in New York, Mrs Jones. Just because he's an honest cop, doesn't mean he'll do it by the book. And a bit like the Terminator, every time he gets knocked down, he gets up again - eventually in some cases!
It's a clever plot, firstly because it will appeal to readers from both sides of the Big pond but also because it anchors on real events, the uncommon thread being stylishly sewn together.
In many ways it is a classic 'boy-meets-girl' character study, but the snaking, unpredictable and complex plot crackles it all along like a bull whip.
Easy to read and lots of fun. Great stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book!
Crime, as a genre, covers a wide range of styles. My preference is quite strongly for the gentle police procedural, with a bit of dry humour where possible, not too 'gritty'. Of course, without some sex and violence, it wouldn't be much of a book; but if the author gets the balance is right, then the result can be excellent - and B. A. Morton has come pretty close with this one.
The story is set in America (unusual for an author living in rural England) and as such it contains many of the usual tropes. Our hero is a cop who prefers to work alone, walks pretty close to the line and has little patience with authority (something we can all identify with!). This starting point usually leads to a style involving violent confrontations, with our hero soaking up impressive amounts of beatings, suffering injuries that would hospitalise him for a month, etc, and still coming back for more, and beating the tough guys . . . which is not what I am looking for in a book. This book does follow that trend to a certain point - indeed, that is one of the main reasons I am giving it four stars rather than five - but it doesn't strain credibility beyond acceptable limits.
The lead characters, Detective Tommy Connell and Lizzie ('Mrs Jones') are interesting and easy to identify with - and Lizzie in particular is definitely not a stereotype! The supporting cast are well written, and the plot is wonderfully complex, with criminals, police, government agents, concealed identities and relationships (hinted at and then slowly revealed). And there is a well-crafted back-story, and connections with real-world events of 2009/10. And no, I am not giving any more away, go and read it for yourself!
I almost gave this five stars. A reviewer who likes a complex plot and is less picky about a hero who can still function shortly after serious injury might well do so. This was good!
I already bought the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome :D
Mrs Jones was an exciting and complex storyline, it kept me intrigued and interested throughout its entirety! The characters were amazing and so strongly developed, the love tangle between the two main characters was a lovely aspect of the story. It made me want them to end up together and it be a happy ending, which seemed unlikely at times. I read the book so quickly, only a day, because the fast paced and exciting storyline got me gripped!! Definitely worth a read!! Can't wait to try another one :)
