About the author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA's RITA(R).

- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2015"He'd though he wanted a tall woman. He'd been mistaken. He wanted her."
FINAL DECISION: Witty and filled with incredible longing. I appreciate how Heath manages to fill her books with imperfect characters who exist in a word where each is longing for love and imperfect perfection.
THE STORY: MIss MInerva Dodger has had enough after six seasons fending off fortune hunters. Only willing to marry for love, Minerva has given up. Instead she intends to visit a notorious club where women meet lovers in order that she might have one perfect night where someone desires her. Nicholson Lambert, Duke of Ashebury arrives at the club looking for imperfect perfection to add to his collection. When he spies the disguised Minerva, he finds a woman who intrigues him especially because she insists on remaining anonymous. When Ashe realizes that he cannot stop thinking of the mysterous woman, he is determined to track her down.
OPINION: This book is a continual surprise. Heath places her characters in situations that I've read before but then twists and turns the story in new and unexpected ways. Minerva who is strong willed, smart, clever and stubborn is also vulnerable because she truly believes that no one can want her for herself. Meeting Ashe while she is masked gives Minerva an opportunity to find her own self-confidence. Her fear is that if Ashe discovered her true identity that his interest would dissolve. What she doesn't know is that Ashe quickly suspects her identity and continues her pursuit. There is a complication to their courtship that almost derails their happiness. I appreciated that Heath solves that dilemma with unique flair.
A Heath novel is often filled with lyrical prose that well expresses the longing and completeness of love. I always feel that I have read something beautiful in reading the words that her characters use to describe their emotions. The characters surrender themselves totally to love and to one another by the end and that brings joy.
Heath also does a good job of giving her characters emotional, physical and societal challenges that must be overcome. Her characters are thus given a complexity that makes their triumph at the end especially unique.
WORTH MENTIONING: I was incredibly pleased with the numerous appearances by characters from the connected series.
CONNECTED BOOKS: FALLING INTO BED WITH A DUKE is the first book in the Hellions of Havisham series. This series is about a group of men who were orphaned as boys and went to live with their mad guardian (who also had a son). The boys ran wild -- thus are known as hellions. This series is connected with both the Scoundrels of St. James (especially BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND DESIRE which is the story of Minerva's parents) and the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James (especially WHEN THE DUKE WAS WICKED which is the story of MInerva's half brother). This book can be read as a stanalone, but the others are so good, I recommend reading them all.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2015Falling In Bed With A Duke is a great beginning to Lorraine Heath's new Historical Romance, Late Victorian Era. The story opens with 3 young boys whose parents have been killed in a train accident. One is the newly minted Duke of Ashebury , The Earl of Greyling and is twin brother Edward. . They are now the new wards to the Marquess of Marsden. The Marquess has gone quite mad, insane after the death of his wife. He has a young son Locksley. The boy basically raised themselves and 20 years later are know as the Hellions. They are very close and treat each other like brothers. I believe Edward and Locksley will be the characters in the next books. At least I hope so.
Ashe meets Minerva Dogger at the Nightingale Club. A Private club for women to meet men. She is there to lose her virginity. She is a very rich Spinster with a huge dowry. The women that frequent the Club wear mask to conceal there identities and the men don't so the women know who they are. Ashe is drawn to Minerva and they start a slow hot burning relationship which turns into love. The characters are well written and developed. They have layers of personality. This a relationship building romance and Not one full of angst. Minerva and Ashe have great conversations and learn about each other. They actually grown in love with each other. They have a hot seamy sexual romance. They both are loveable characters. There is a host of supporting characters that I enjoyed also and hope to see them with there own stories. If there is one thing I could change it would be at the very end when Minerva overhears a conversation about Ashe Marrying her for her dowry. That wasn't necessary as the story was air tight without it. I Highly Recommend "Falling Into Bed With A Duke"
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2019I really expecting more of this book. I do not mean that is a bad book. I had had read many books of mrs health and I like all of them. I do not understand how I felt the book a drag. Minerva is the daughter of Dodger a ex owner of gamble club and he was a character of the scoundrels of saint james, my favorite series. A man of the streets who together with the urchins and a girl an urchin like the boys. Mrs health wrote a series of the children’s of the gang. Corvinton was the son of duke of corvington. Mr Dodger Minerva father and his half brother and that was a issue because her half brother was her father brother. Why mrs health does wrote about that issue. Minerva brother was her uncle but show like she does not know it. I knew that because I read dodger story. Maybe she wants to keep the secret and I do understand that it will destroy Minerva and her half brother. Well that is not the story is Minerva story and she a splinter having 6 season and candidates are only for her inheritance. She resigned to be splinter but she seeks a man who loves her. Well she goes to a club where man and woman of aristocracy and we off commoners to seeks for adventure and sex encounter marry or singles. She mees Arche an impoverished duke who finds her and they started see each other. Naturally she covers her face and he does not who she is. Archer discover who she is. The first chapters were boring and I started to jump one page to other page. The true that was the last chapters when I started to get more interesting but really Minerva was not pleasant to me always complaining that all the man seeks her for money. Really I do not like her. I hope that mrs health does not write other characters. I will read the next one and hope that is Edward story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024This was an interesting story. It kept my interest from the very beginning until the end. It even set up the storyline for the two upcoming bookstores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, kept me turning the pages
I loved the feisty, sassy, smart heroine and the gorgeous hero she brought to his knees. The story had me enthralled on what would happen next, and the side characters are so interesting I can't wait to read their stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars The bold and beautiful
Book 1 in "The Hellions of Havisham Series " - Minerva is an intelligent and spunky woman with a large dowry who has decided not to marry because all of her suitors are in love with her dowry. So she is going to live her life on her own terms but first she wants to spend one night with a lover - just to experience lust. I thought this novel was so accurate about how women weren't expected to have a brain in those eras so she would have been a disappointment to the silly men that were thinking she was the problem instead of themselves. I liked her bold and daring solutions and quips and I loved the Duke. This novel was a great start to the new series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Historical Romance
A fabulous historical romance that features some unique plot elements interwoven with a lot of London society events. Minerva is the headstrong spinster and Ashebury is the darling Duke of society. However the first meeting by way of the Nightingale club mixes up the standard way such a story would work.
This book is intermittently steamy and does depict sex before marriage, and the construct of the Nightingale club justifies this and alludes heavily to a variety of kink/fetish. My only complaint is that the book is almost too wholesome despite the set up of the Nightingale club. I found the writing less interesting in these areas than in some other books. It was good though, and tended to feature female pleasure more than male pleasure.
I appreciated the male lead was depicted with a learning disability. However I feel it that element of his character just got resolved in a single page after he worried about it the whole time. So it's difficult to say whether I think it was overplayed or underplayed.
It could have been 5 stars, except I found it dragged slightly through the middle and one of the big disagreements was foreshadowed for the whole book but not realised until quite close to the end. Rushing a lot of the fun into the last 20%. At one point it slowed to a 3 star, but the ending picked up so well that the romantic conclusion draw a tear from my eye - that earns a star in itself.
This book sets up the characters for the other two books in the series. So if you're anything like me you'll immediately want to read those too.
