Taming the Rake Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 390 ratings

They are known as the Rake Slayers… Tired of the different standards applied to the men who flout society’s rules, three young ladies seek a little primitive justice and hatch a plan to bring a few of London’s most notorious rakes up to snuff before refusing them. But they soon learn exactly what it is that makes rakes so dangerous.

Tasked with bringing down the most notorious rake of all, the always capable and efficient Lady Georgina “Gina” Beauclerk is determined to show the wicked Earl of Coventry just what she has to offer… by promptly turning his dissolute world on its ear. Instead she finds her own world spinning out of control. Because even after she has organized his household, rid his home of alcohol, and paid off his mistress, she can’t help but see that there is more to the handsome earl than first she realized.

Forced into respectable society to escort his debuting sister, Coventry intends to find her a husband posthaste so he can return to the freedom and debauchery of his clubs. After the death of his unfaithful wife, the disillusioned Coventry has no intention of ever marrying again—especially not to an interfering busybody who won’t take “no” for an answer. No matter how much she tempts him.

5 STARS!
I loved loved loved this book so much!!!

It was perfect!

Everything is so detailed and so very well described that you can't help but feel as though you're a passive spectator standing right in the middle of it all. And to know her characters and some of the plot is inspired and fictionalized based on real people, makes you feel like you're just not reading a work of fiction, but time traveling back to centuries ago, where life and rules were much more complex, but in my opinion much more exciting. The history behind her stories are confirmed through her Author's Note which I'm always looking forward to and adore reading.

This was such a fun read and the love scenes were incredible. I loved Coventry! He was so full of flaws and so emotionally traumatized by all that was done to him as a child and as grown man that it wasn't hard at all to understand his rakish behaviors and life of debauchery, if anything all he went through made me love him even more. Like Gina I didn't give up on him :)
Gina was perfect, and exactly what I look for in a heroine; strong, confident and not afraid at all to dare and speak her mind.

Monica McCarty sure knows how to work her magic on me through her well researched stories. He characters are believable and feel real. And she always writes the most wonderful HEA.

I do hope we get a sequel. I want to know what happens with Cecelia and Beaufort.

Slow to pick up but eventually quite entertaining. Half the time he keeps grabbing her arm and glaring at her, but otherwise enjoyable plot with interesting characters.

Lady Georgina Beauclark’s second season has just begun & she’s already bored. Bored enough that when her best friend suggest they start a secret club of their own, one to tame some of the most notorious rakes known as the Hellfire Rakes, she agrees. Their plan – to give these rakes a taste of their own medicine & humiliating them before the ton.
James, the Earl of Coventry, has closed his heart to any affection, after all he never had any as a child & his first wife was incapable of said emotion. Not having any feelings has enabled him to earn his reputation as a member of the Hellfire Rakes.
The Earl’s sister guilts him into escorting her to ton functions which suits Lady Georgian’s plans as she drew his name as the rake she is to tame. As she sets out to organize his life & show him what a wife can do for him he endeavors to prove her wrong.
A must read for an entertaining story and to see whether Georgian teaches James or vice versa. But be forewarned there are tears, laughter, twists & turns.
This story is the first I have read by Monica McCarty but definitely will not be the last.

I have to say I read this in one sitting. I always enjoy Monica's work and this is no different. What she did however is find a new way to bring two people together and fall in love. To often historical romance is the same story just different names and dates. But the premise of this story is new. Yes you have the reformed rakes in all kinds of stories but not because a few friends set out to repay the rakes for their behavior by turning it back on them in such a way. This story felt fresh and exciting. Not to mention heartbreaking and endearing. Not sure if she wrote this story with the intention of there being more books for the other characters but it works great as a stand alone. With that said I really think the other characters were so good that they should have their own books to finish their stories. I know she has so much to work on with her current and upcoming books and I so look forward to those but I hope she revisits these great characters. I have to know what happens to Cece and Claire!!! Great work once again Monica.

Absolutely loved it. Shades of early regency romance of Judith McNaught. Very funny, endearing and romantic. If you are looking for a regency romance that will have U chuckling as U read, with a strong h and tortured H, not to much about titles and costumes, then I recommend. I wont rehash the plot here and while some of it had me quirking an eyebrow every now and then on the probability of an Incident happening quite like that in that day and age, what I loved the most is that the author did not forget that this was a ROMANCE novel. Did not want to put it down and while I did not read in one sitting due to something called work, I did finish it in 2 night's after the kids had gone to sleep. I have read all of Ms M books and love her style so this book was a delight. Glad she decided to publish. Well done Ms M. Would love to see more regency please!!!

I've been reading most of Monica's "scottish" novels and she mentioned she was releasing her early books... well they are good, not quite the level I'm used to reading of hers, but I can see from them how she has improved her craft. They are still VERY good stories, and entertaining. I'm impressed with her early works, and it is really interesting to see how an author I really like has grown. You are awesome Monica.

I loved this book but then Monica McCarty is one of my all time favorite authors. Taming the Rake is a story I'll certainly read over and over again. I would love to see this book turned into a series so I could learn about the other characters lives and how they unfolded.

Taming the Rake was one of those books where you just knew something was going to backfire with the plan to get even the girls concocted. Then you sit back and love every second of reading their journey. I laughed, I cried, I held my breath. Enjoyable from the first page all the way to the end. I've enjoyed all of Ms. McCarthy's Highland Guard series. Her journey into Regency England didn't disappoint this reader and I look forward to reading more.

Dit is overduidelijk een van de vroegere boeken van miss McCarty. Het is een leuk verhaal met glimpsen van de diepe, rauwe emoties zo kenmerkend in haar latere boeken.

3.0 out of 5 stars un livre classique . et qui laisse sur sa faim
Reviewed in France on May 7, 2015
