Charlotte (South Landers Book 3) Kindle Edition
After losing his first love in childbirth, Nicholas Alden knows with a great certainty that he must never be a father. But to be a husband is a very different matter--mandated by South Australian society, necessary for his family name. So when he meets beautiful social climber Charlotte, he believes he has found a wife he can keep at arm's length. He is terribly wrong.
Born on the wrong side of the sheets, Charlotte hopes Nick can prop up her reputation long enough to secure a suitable match for her beloved cousin. She assumes that is all she can ask of her new husband--until they succumb to a night of uninhibited passion. Her heart is won in his embrace, but he doesn't know the truth of her scandalous parentage. If he did, all would be lost.
Still, somehow, Charlotte dares to hope that her match of convenience could become something more. It is a reckless gamble, but the prize--a marriage of blazing lifelong desire--is one worth any risk... I can't put my finger on what it is about this book that made me want to keep turning the pages; I just needed to find out what was going to happen to these two. In my opinion, that is a perfect quality in a book.

I know some readers have a problem with a husband who is cheating, but the circumstances are not "the usual" in this book and there isn't any slimy sneaking around. Suffice it to say, there is no sense of infidelity. I liked Nick from the very beginning, but then I like an out-of-control and who-gives-a-damn type of hero. I did want to bang their heads together and make them talk, but they were going to do things their own way....
Taylor's story telling is subtle and lures you ever deeper into both Charlotte and Nick's pasts. Seductive hints into the characters of both Nick and Charlotte make exploring their psyches a pleasure and Taylor does an excellent job of creating 3-dimensional protagonists you care about.
I know this book is part of a series but there was no problem reading it as a stand-alone.
On one hand you have me happy and content that Charlotte ended well, gave me my little happy buzz and heart flutter. On the other I nearly snapped a tooth my teeth were grit so hard in the first half of the story. I’m not a fan of cheating in any way or form. Yeah, yeah, yeah…I know it was acceptable for a “gentleman” to have a bit on the side, but to me, it just makes my skin crawl. The first half of Charlotte is a lot of justification, explanation and accusation so we know the how and why this “gentleman” made his choices. I get it, and I can sort of understand his reasoning too.
DOESN’T MEAN I HAVE TO LIKE IT!!
Now I have that off my chest…Charlotte is a beautiful woman whose life has been ruled by the decisions of her mother. After her mother passes, Charlotte must find her own way in a world where well educated and brought up women with a lack of funds have two choices – marriage or mistress. In Charlotte’s case, she decides to use her beauty to snare a hubby. There are a few contenders, but she decides to use her head and find the one who could use her as a cover for his own problems. Step up to the plate…Mr Nicholas Alden.
Nick rhymes with??? For the first half of the story, he was an absolute douchewaffle. He drinks till he passes out and normally in his mistress’s bed, spends more time in his club than his own house and avoids his wife who trapped him because she’s too appealing. Yeah…not what I’d call a real hero. All these things together made him the least appealing hero in the history of heroes. I was ready to write him off and say that Charlotte was a dud. Then, I started to see his actions were for a reason and realised his beautiful outside appearance actually sheltered a broken man. His reason for having a mistress started to make sense and the hurt he was dishing out wasn’t really intentional.
THE HORROR…THE DOUCHEWAFFLE WASN’T SO DOUCHEY AFTER ALL.
The story flowed well and kept my attention from start to finish. Yes, my eyes were squinting and I wasn’t exactly, loving the hero, but I was still riveted. I wanted to see if the sweet and beautiful Charlotte had the ability to break down his defenses and change the man. By the end, it was a bit of a role reversal. Could the hero help the secretive heroine share her secrets too?
Charlotte is set in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1865. This is a love story filled with angst. There are misunderstandings, communication breakdowns, and fisticuffs to deal with. Maybe I’m getting tougher in my old age, but I’m not automatically throwing my kindle against the wall at the first sign of cheating or mistress’s. I’m starting to ask the questions and seeking the reason why. In the end, I actually enjoyed Charlotte and was happy how it ended. Would I have been happier if Nick thought before he spoke…YES! Would I have preferred if the mistress did not exist…YES! Would I have preferred Charlotte to stick to her guns and tell Nick to sod off…YES! But…where would the fun be in that.
I received an ARC of Charlotte via Netgalley for an honest review.
The lovely Charlotte is running out of time. A young woman who is gifted with the ability to settle into society is actually nearly penniless with the responsibility of her cousin, Sarah, for whom she also needs to find a husband.
One evening, Charlotte is walking in the garden at a soiree and sees Nick sitting on a bench. She tells him she is in trouble and needs his help. With that, she screams, which bring everyone running. It is assumed that Nick has compromised her and they are immediately betrothed. Nick doesn’t fight it because he assumes that she is pregnant which suits his needs by providing an heir that does not have his “damaged” genes.
After their marriage, Charlotte moves into Nick’s home with his father and brings Sarah with her. Even though there is now money to use to introduce Sarah to society, Charlotte’s talent at sewing allows her to change her own dresses around making them look completely new. She pin money she receives is secretly being used for a home for unwed mothers that Sarah is running.
Thinking that her husband has no desire for her starts to bother Charlotte and she longs to seduce him as he is so very handsome. He feels the same way because his wife is lovely and admired by so many. Since by now he realizes that his assumption that she was pregnant when they married is incorrect, he still knows that he cannot allow himself to risk impregnating her. In addition, he begins to wonder if she is having an affair with a friend of theirs.
The story is good, somewhat complicated and I wish it had not been fed piecemeal to the reader. To read a novel when you are totally lost at times while the author “hides” what I consider to be important facts can be frustrating. That is the reason I could only give this book three stars.
