I would have given this story 5 Stars but for disappointing statements on mobile homes and completely avoidable child drowning.
Great quote:
"Adhere to your purpose and you will soon feel as well as you ever did. On the contrary, if you falter, and give up, you will lose the power of keeping any resolution, and will regret it all your life." -Abraham Lincoln
Insulting paragraph:
"She’d never cared much for trailers no matter how grand the illusion of a house-like façade. Mobile. Modular. Manufactured. A trailer was still a trailer. Prefabricated housing with a permanent chassis under its skirt. How anyone made a conscious choice to live in a manufactured dwelling, when they could save their pennies and spring for a house, eluded her. Squeeze two sides together and voila—the birth of a double-wide. Or piece together a third and make it a triple."
Insulting statement on mobile home ownership. Many people choose to buy land, place a mobile home on it and build a home around it. You do what you can with what you can afford.
Great description on relationships:
"Bo couldn’t tear his eyes from her, unable to shake the feeling he was with a completely different woman tonight. And then it hit him. Maybe the newness of the relationship, all those fluttering flips of the stomach like a car taking an abrupt dip in the road, were starting to wear off."
Quinn describes the death of her baby Isaiah and the incompetence of her in-laws. Why did the in-laws refuse to put a child-proof fence around the pool? No word on if the in-laws kept the pool available for swimming.
“It was an accident. He was staying the weekend at Marcus’s parents’ house. Playing in the backyard. He tripped, fell into the pool. No one was watching, and, when they finally noticed he was missing, it was too late. He drowned.”
I will re-read this story and always look forward to new works by this author.
The narrator did a good job, there are two places she repeats words, but be sides that she does a great job. There are no volume changes, no background noise, the characters voices are good as well as the emotions she makes you feel. I always knew who was talking and what they were feeling. She makes you dislike the ones the author wants you to, and like the ones that you are suppose to as well as a twists that has you reeling not knowing what to feel but in the end you will end up liking this person.
Initially let me say that I didn’t read this book in one go and maybe that’s the reason I couldn’t catch the atmosphere of the book. Maybe I was just very restless when I read the book and therefore I’m so wary when it comes to comment on the general atmosphere of the book. I’m sure, it’s my fault and I’m sorry that I can’t put my finger on this – it’s just a gut feeling. The fact that the author attempted to offer depth to the plot by quickly but superficially deal with various issues, just added to this “restlessness”. Moreover so as I felt that these points were just thrown into the plot but remained unelaborated and finally led to loose ends. Unfortunately I can’t go into details regarding this without giving away any content but this “hectic” just added even more to my above mentioned feelings.
The romance part of the book was better structured and the reader was given the total package. However, I belong to the reader who wants “the whole deal” and therefore I felt that this book wasn’t as rewarding as other suspense romances I read in the past….
Appologizing for being so franc and I hope I didn’t sadden anybody.
