Titans Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,611 ratings

Texas in the early 1900s, its inhabitants still traveling by horseback and barely familiar with the telephone, was on the cusp of an oil boom that, unbeknownst to its residents, would spark a period of dramatic changes and economic growth. In the midst of this transformative time in Southern history, two unforgettable characters emerge and find their fates irrevocably intertwined: Samantha Gordon, the privileged heiress to the sprawling Las Tres Lomas cattle ranch near Fort Worth, and Nathan Holloway, a sweet-natured and charming farm boy from far north Texas. As changes sweep the rustic countryside, Samantha and Nathan's connection drives this narrative compulsively forward as they love, lose, and betray. In this grand yet intimate novel, Meacham once again delivers a heartfelt, big-canvas story full of surprising twists and deep emotional resonance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The finest historical fiction not only entertains but teaches readers something about an era not their own, and this novel offers a stellar crash course in Texas history...The novel has it all: a wide cast of characters, pitch-perfect period detail, romance, plenty of drama, and skeletons in the closet (literally). Saga fans will be swooning."

"Equals and perhaps surpasses
Roses...It has everything any reader could want in a book...epic storytelling that plunges the reader headfirst into the plot...[Meacham] is a titan herself."―Jackie K Cooper, Book Critic, The Huffington Post

"Emotionally resounding...Texas has never seemed grander...as a mammoth human filled with longing and ambition...Meacham's easy-to-read prose helps to maintain a pace that you won't be able to quit, pushing through from chapter to chapter to find the next important nugget of this dramatic family tale. It is best savored over a great steak with a glass of wine and evenings to yourself."―
BookReporter

"Meacham crafts a grand Texas family epic, by way of Dickens...the explosive plot elements...collide in a satisfying climax...the final paragraph is practically perfection."―

"A novel about family love and retribution as much as wealth or ambition. What makes
Titans successful is how skillfully the author involves readers in the characters' lives, and keeps us reading, as we watch the plot play out."―Historical Novel Society

Leila Meacham writes of East Texas with authority. She has lived in Texas all of her life with the exceptions short sojourns out of state with her Air Force husband and her birth in Minden, Louisiana, because her father could not get her mother across the border of the Sabine River into Texas for her to be born. She says that as far as she knows, it's the only regret he ever had of his daughter.

Leila graduated from North Texas State University with a Bachelor's Degree of Arts. She married a pilot in the US Air Force during the war years of Viet Nam and served in numerous capacities of volunteer work as a military wife before resuming her teaching career in San Antonio. She taught high school English until her retirement from that profession, developing the gifted and talented program still used in the tenth grade curriculum of Converse Judson. She was twice elected by her peers as Teacher of the Year.

She came to her love of writing late, she says, even though she dabbled briefly into the process when she wrote a romance novel in the mid-eighties that she never expected to be published. It was followed by two others because she was under contract, but the experience and genre left her with a desire never to pick up a pen again.

"That changed when I ran out of things to do after retirement," she says, "and one day I sat down and wrote ROSES."

Leila has no children and has been married to her husband for forty-three years.

It’s hard to say which of Leila Meacham’s novels is best. They are all very, very good. It was hard to put this one down. She weaves a beautiful story filled with intrigue. This novel should be on everyone’s reading list.

I just whizzed through this very enjoyable book. The characters are so well drawn that I felt personally acquainted. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I just couldn't feel some of the motivations and /or reactions were believeable--the mother's coldness to the son she kept, how good kimd Leon Holloway continued to love his stonehearted wife, the fear of the adoptive father that his daughter would prefer her birth parents over the ones who loved and raised her, the complete change of character of one the Waverling employees. But then she wouldn't have a story if they all acted in accordance with how I think! It is a good story, showing lots of research.

This is a great book, but it is not a mystery thriller, a spy novel, a detective who done it novel, or an X rated love story. It is just fantastic literature. The title itself refers back to Greek mythology and the ancient gods who ruled before the Olympians. These giants were the children of Uranus and Gaea, or heaven and earth. This is not a book about Greek mythology, however. It is a book about mortal giants of incredible strength and knowledge...not necessarily physical strength. It is about people who are very powerful and influential in certain fields...thus the title Titans.
It is also a book about families, parents, sisters, brothers, friends, and foes. The author says it best when she said, "Key players make wrong decisions based on what they believe to be the right reasons. These always result in life changes, often tragic. The characters must then either deal with the consequences or find a way out of the dilemma. 'Crises defines us." In them, we discover who we are."
This is such an accurate description of the characters in this book. They are caught in their own web of "good intentions."
The novel's setting is in Texas during the early 1900's and right before the huge oil boom. It begins with the birth of twins and one is given away because the mother does not want two. Now what? These two children become the core of the novel. They grow up living in different towns, but very close to each other and yet never knew the other existed. Until...
It is also a story of friendships, love, betrayal, and loyalty. You name it, and it has it. It is just a great read about life and how we handle ourselves in our various dilemmas.
If you enjoy good literature, you'll like it. I would also recommend Roses also by Leila Meacham. Both are fantastic!

Having read all of Leila Meacham's books I of course had to read this one as well. If you are comparing this book to her previous books like "Roses" you will be sorely disappointed. Still a good read that kept me wanting to come back & read more.

Pros: Charactors that I could relate to. A well researched time period by the author. I appreciated the history & interesting subject matter of the book. Easy read with a well thought out plot line.

Cons: I didn't feel like the author did a good job of tying up the ending. All of a sudden it just ended & I felt like the most important relationship, that of Samantha & Nathan, wasn't even explored. I would have loved to read about the moment that Nathan found out that Sam was his twin. It was an important key element of the book that could have filled a whole last chapter. It was the moment the entire book was about & then it just wasn't there. Disappointing! I also prefer the authors format of a multigenerational time period saga like in "Roses." I wanted to read about offspring. This book missed that target audience Leila Meacham is known for.

About nine years ago, a friend and I decided to read 52 books together over the course of a year. We each chose 26 titles and drew out of a bowl, the order in which they would be read. Rose's was our second book. My friend chose it because it was a title she received from the book of the month club and was on her to read pile. It became an instant favorite for both of us. We recommended it to anyone who asked for a book recommendation, and some who did not ask. Titans, for me, fits that same criteria-instant favorite. This book grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let go. Even before I finished it, I was recommending it to people I thought would enjoy it. I truly hope they read it and do enjoy it.

I can't really go into particulars about the story. I fear that may give it away. Just know that for this avid reader, the characters and the storyline were completely engrossing and engaging. There is only one character who is unlikable - you'll know who she is straight away...

Grab a cup of tea and a comfy spot and enjoy!
