About the author
Alan Brennert is the author of the best-selling historical novels MOLOKA'I and HONOLULU, both favorites of reading groups across the country. MOLOKA'I was a 2012 "One Book, One San Diego" selection and HONOLULU was named one of the best books of 2009 by The Washington Post. PEOPLE Magazine said of his novel PALISADES PARK, "Brennert writes his valentine to the New Jersey plaground of his youth in RAGTIME style, mixing fact and fiction. It's a memorable trip." His work on the television series L.A. LAW earned him an Emmy Award in 1991 and his short story "Ma Qui" was honored with a Nebula Award in 1992. His latest book, DAUGHTER OF MOLOKA'I, is a follow-up to MOLOKA'I that tells the story of Rachel Kalama's daughter Ruth, her early life, her internment during World War II, and her eventual meeting with her birth mother, Rachel. The novel explores the women's 22-year relationship, only hinted at it in MOLOKA'I. It will be published by St Martin's Press on February 19, 2019.

Much of modern media is saturated in progressive orthodoxy, a type of inverse puritanical ideology that aggressively detests religion (especially Christianity) and any objective morality. Comics are no exception. So when I got hold of “Batman: Holy Terror”, an Elseworld tale (a substream of DC comics that present established characters in altered timelines or environments), the attitude in it of the author toward religion was easy to guess: organized religion is bad.
Yawn... boring.
Throughout the story, supposed Christian leaders who sought or had obtained political power had used it as a veil to cover their many evils: murder, human experimentation, extortion, etc. The litany of wrongs the Commissioner and other Inquisitors (the title of inspectors in this alternate universe) committed introduced a plot hole that the author couldn’t deal with because it would have destroyed the caricature he had painted to serve the story: If a follower of Jesus repeatedly / knowingly does evil (sins), what should we conclude?
SLIGHT SPOILER BELOW
However, there were good points. In addition to its stellar artwork, there is a wonderful gold nugget in this graphic novel that fully redeems the author’s work from the garbage pile. It’s on the fourth to last page. In it, the character of Bruce Wayne realizes that his devotion to Jesus shouldn’t and isn’t determined by his level of devotion to the State or its corrupt, hypocritical leaders.
As he says, “God is not the State and the State is not God. Defiance of God’s self-styled interpreters is not denial of God.”
There’s some depth there that would be good to ponder.
The time is the present but one different from the one we know. Oliver Cromwell did not die when he did in our world, instead he rose from his sickbed and persisted for another decade. Because of this, the mother church is in full control of Britain and the New World colonies (and much of the world that they have conquered). Here a young Bruce Wayne has finally found peace after the death of his parents. He is about to take his vows with the church when Inquisitor Gordon reveals that Wayne's parents were rebels and were executed my the Church in a way made to look like a random crime. Now Bruce does not know what to do.
His confidence in the church has been shaken and Bruce sets out to revenge himself on those that decided to kill his parents. But his quest leads him higher and deeper as he discovers that there are people with amazing abilities that have been either enslaved by the church or imprisoned. Bruce sees that his problem is not with the Church itself but with the way some men are wielding its power. With his faith strong Wayne continues to don an old demon costume of his father's and goes out to fight the injustice of the system.
This was one of the best of the Elseworlds tales. The alternate history worked well and the parallel heroes that Bruce discovers were very well done. While Gotham By Gaslight had a couple of sequels, this one has remained alone although it is rich enough to spawn many new tales. Check it out.
HOLY TERROR IS AN ELSEWORLDS TALE BASED IN A POLICE STATE ATMOSPHERE, IN THIS TIME SUPERTYPES ARE OUTLAWED AS WELL AS OTHER THINGS. AS THE STORY PROGRESSES SOME OF THE THINGS AN AVID READER OF DC'S FINEST NEVER WANTS TO SEE, HAPPENS! SUPERMAN, FLASH, AQUAMAN ETC ETC (I'M NOT GIVING ANY OF IT AWAY). THE ART IS AS I STATED BEFORE BY NORM BREYFOGLE, FLUID LINES AND DARK IMAGING, EXCELLENT EXCELLENT WORK AND WRITTEN ALAN BRENNERT, FANTASTIC WORK!
