Oh reader who has yet to meet Fr. Bredder, how lucky you are. The typical image of a Catholic priest has taken a beating these last several years but Fr. Bredder is the type of priest I was blessed to know growing up. Holton's deft writing bring us, not only the (dare I say it?) loveable Fr. Bredder but also the morose and sympathetic Lieutenant Minardi (and his delightful daughter Barbara). As rich backdrop, Holton paints an atmospheric Los Angeles in the best noir tradition but written with the eyes of compassion. In this novel, Holton has made LA his town in the way that Anne Perry has made Victorian London her own. Furthermore, Holton is that rare writer who can write teenagers (the delightful Barbara is on the cusp of her teen years) without being condescending. He also, heartbreakingly, knows how to portray the elderly. And I haven't even touched the deliciously macabre way that the Reverend Mother gets involved with the mystery......

"For the first time, he saw the priest in a strange light--a sort of policeman...of God, and the thought astonished him with its aptness. The criminal code and the code of God; he, Minardi, operated from one and the priest from the other, and both worked to the same end, the prevention of evil." (Lieutenant Minardi, The Saint Maker)

I liked the characters were made real and loved the story. The twist was very unexpected.

Good story but some discontinuity and leaps.

Father Bredder returns from visiting his sister and brings back a rare melon that she grows, as a gift for the Head Mother. The melon turns out to be a woman's decapitated head; a shocking whole different variety of "melon." After personally delivering this gruesome find to the police homicide division's detective, Father wants answers in that more spiritual. The hunt is on from there as he embarks upon his search for evil and its salvation. Well developed story and characters. Murder mystery with a touch of humor. Great read & highly recommend.

First time I have read a Father Bredde Mystery. I like it.
Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2016
This is a very well written and suspenseful story of a detective with a different viewpoint from any that I have read. The world and characters are very well developed without pages and pages describing them just to develop them. I have purchased the next two and will likely purchase the remainder of the series. Excellent.

Sadly, the book is very poorly edited. Commas will, be sprinkled throughout, the text in the oddest, places. The author has employed the annoying trick of telling you what he's going to say and then saying it. I am smarter than that. Unfortunately, I spent $2.99 on this book. Couldn't finish it.
