4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 54 ratings

When a con man dies, no one cares…except his killer.

Apartment manager Wilson McKenna’s day tanks when the cops accuse an old friend of killing a ruthless Honolulu scammer. McKenna hates to break the “no more amateur sleuthing” promise he made to his new girlfriend, but his buddy is desperate. He's got no alibi. Made threats against the dead man. And, his gun was the murder weapon. Talk about a guy with big trouble.

McKenna turns to his private-investigator tenant, Chance Logan, for help. Too late, McKenna discovers Chance isn’t really a PI. Now, McKenna’s stuck with an investigation he doesn’t want, is mentoring a PI-wannabe, and hiding it all from his girlfriend.

A string of shattered lives—and suspects—lie in the dead man’s wake. Can McKenna and Chance find a cagey killer who's always one step ahead? Or, will a dead con man ruin another life?

Review

"Terry Ambrose perfectly captures the Oahu setting from the pidgin dialect to the distinctly local characters..." -- Kings River Life Magazine Murder, blackmail, beautiful women and an ancient Hawaii spirit drive this fun, fast-paced mystery. Ambrose delivers not only a perfect beach read, but a witty novel that will have readers delighted to the last page. Nancy Cole Silverman -- author of the Carol Childs Mysteries Honolulu Hottie is a heady cocktail of a book. Mix one part humor with one part mystery, stir in a few oddball characters, blend in a talkative Hawaiian spirit, and you have the perfect concoction. Terry Ambrose has written another 5-star winner. -- Cindy Sample, National Bestselling Author of the Laurel McKay Mysteries McKenna is back. Both of him. His first name is Wilson, but he sees himself as Good McKenna and Bad McKenna, and not even he knows which will show up at the most inopportune moment whether he's dealing with a murder, a new girlfriend or one of his wacky tenants. Ambrose is a master at weaving fast action into the laid back island life and giving us lots of laughs along the way. I love this series. -- Mike Orenduff, Author of The Pot Thief Mysteries

Terry Ambrose started out skip tracing and collecting money from deadbeats and quickly learned that liars come from all walks of life. He never actually stole a car, but sometimes hired big guys with tow trucks and a penchant for working in the dark to “help” when negotiations failed.

A resident of Southern California, he loves spending time in Hawaii, especially on the Garden Island of Kauai, where he invents lies for others to read. His years of chasing deadbeats taught him many valuable life lessons such as—always keep your car in the garage.

Possibly the most fun Hawaii-based fiction series available. Terry's books can be read as stand-alones or in a series.

I was given an early copy of this book for review. I enjoyed it as much as the others by this author. There were lots of plot twists, so you never really were sure who could have been the culprit. As, always, you paint a great picture of Hawaii (both the touristy and not so visible parts). This is a great follow up to the last one. I enjoyed how McKenna kept going through turmoil to do the right thing and keep his promise. It was quite nice to see that Benni understands him, and appreciates him for who he is. I of course give it 5 stars. Looking forward to the next one.
