Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up—This horror flick reimagining of Sabrina the Teenage Witch is a lushly cinematic and refreshingly grim departure from the charmingly sweet heroine of yesteryear. This isn't your mother's teenage witch: although Sabrina is dealing with common adolescent woes, she's also consorting with the devil and feasting on a sacrificial goat. The story takes place in the days before Sabrina's confirmation into the coven, coinciding with her 16th birthday. In the upcoming ceremony, she must choose to either live as an immortal witch, infinitely powerful but incapable of romantic love, or as a mortal, destined to die but also able to spend her life with her dreamboat boyfriend, Harvey. Meanwhile, Madam Satan, a powerful witch with a vendetta against Sabrina's father, is accidentally raised from hell by two familiar Archie-universe figures; Betty and Veronica are wryly reinvented here as ditzy but powerful witches. The five-issue collection ends in a diabolically creepy cliff-hanger. This iteration is set in the 1960s, incorporating the social upheavals of the time while visually alluding to Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and other paranormal horror films. Hack's scratched filmstrip style, set in sepia tones, makes the inevitable violent splashes of red provocatively grotesque. Some nudity and violence make this more appropriate for older teens. VERDICT Deftly balancing suspense, violence, and wit, this is a welcome and frightening addition for lovers of horror, suspense, and graphic novels; hand to fans of Emily Carroll's Through the Woods and followers of The Walking Dead.—Anna Murphy, Berkeley Carroll School, Brooklyn

I got this book for Christmas and I read the whole thing today! I love the beautiful artwork, and the story is well-crafted and makes references to many horror movies and books that I love. I can't wait for the second volume to come out!

After binge watching Sabrina on Netflix I had to see how the reboot came to be, and I was surprised to see that Archie was behind it. I was even more surprised to see that the comic is actually better than the show. It is darker and more morbid than the show, which seemed appropriate considering the subject matter. It is also paced quicker and is easy to flip through too fast. The art style is great and wonderfully colored, the artists really outdid themselves. This was a labor of love.

If you want to see where Netflix got their inspiration, pick this up. If you loved the creepiness of the show but could live without the feminist overtones, pick this up. The source material really is better in every way.

{My thoughts} – {date entire series completed} – {01.22.2019}
I have a confession. I have already watched the Netflix Original Series that is based of of these graphic Novels. When I’d started to watch it, I’d realized just how morbid this series was. I didn’t however, know the horror that would waiting to bed read within the pages of this book.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina:

– {Book 1: Something Wicked} – {01.22.2019} – Sabrina’s parents are meant to give her to her fathers sisters to raise. Her mother tries to run off with her which doesn’t work out in her favor and Sabrina’s aunts are left with raising her without the help and input of either parent. Sabrina has periods in which she doesn’t want to follow the rules and where the past things her parents had done are thrown into her face by her peers. Her aunts then decide that they are going to move to another town to get away from everything and attempt to give Sabrina a fresh start.

– {Book 2: The Secret History of Madam Satan} – {01.22.2019} – This book had so much blood shed. It was hard not to double, triple take many of the images. There is a lot to be learned within the pages of this book, particularly what happened to Sabrina’s dad and why he never returned back to her.

– {Book 3: Unholy Baptism} – {01.22.2019} – Sabrina is suppose to be getting ready to be baptized into satan’s army and she has some questions about it. She mostly gets the answers she was looking for, but she still isn’t okay with the outcome of everything. Her aunts push her to make the commitment to the dark and no longer follow the light. However, since Sabrina is a half-breed she has a choice and she isn’t sure she is making the right choice with it comes down to everything that is taking place.

– {Book 4: Harvey Horrors} – {01.22.2019} – This book was difficult for me. I’d watch the Sabrina comedy growing up and I’d watched the Netflix series. In both things aren’t nearly is sad and morbid as they are within the pages of this book.

– {Book 5: The Trial} – {01.22.2019} – Sabrina has to face a trial do to breaking witch law. However, she didn’t break it and is still being accused. This trial could result in her death if she is proven to be found guilty. If you’d like to know the outcome you’ll have to read the book. I promise you will not be disappointed.

I decided to read this after hearing it was going to be made into a TV show on the CW.

I loved the whole vibe of this. I liked that it was set in the 1960’s and the artwork matched perfectly. It had the right blend of vintage throwback and horror.

As for the story, I liked the darker take on Sabrina. The first couple of issues had a lot of backstory, but once it got to main plot I was hooked.

Overall, this was a fantastic spooky read. I cannot wait for the show.

This comic was excellent and a great follow up read after reading Vol 1. of Afterlife with Archie. If you are a fan of the Netflix series there are some differences but both stories are worth checking out. I will say that the Sabrina comics first vol ends on a strange note that the TV series season 1 avoids, characters and their arcs are somewhat different as well. If you enjoyed this comic you should definitely check out Afterlife with Archie and Vampronica. Jughead The Hunger vol 1 was enjoyable but by the middle of Vol 2 I wasn't really enjoying it on the same level.

Edgier version of the character and a more modern context for her too- fascinating for new readers and old fans alike. Compliments the Afterlife With Archie line of books. Well worth a look. You can recognize Sabrina here but this version takes all the silliness and syrup out of things that really makes it work for a modern day and age.

I love the Netflix show and therefore decided to try the comics. They are quite different from the show, which I think is perhaps less dark than the comics. I LOVE these comic books!! The illustrations are amazing, so much so that I re-read each comic in part just to see if I had missed a small illustrated detail. I personally like the darker storylines, and I'm dying for the next issue.

Who would have guessed that some of the best horror comics out today would come from Archie Comics? Not me, that's for sure.

I loved loved Afterlife With Archie and was looking forward to getting this graphic novel for a while. It did not disappoint. It takes a different tone than AWA and reminds the reader from page one that the Spellmans are literal witches -- that is, the "brides of Satan" kind, not the "black pointy hat, sexily riding a broom" kind. If you like stuff like Sandman or other Vertigo titles this will be your thing.
