The story takes the reader from Queenstown to London to Hollywood so the setting is varied and the situations Sophia finds herself in are fun and sexy and feel very real. Sophia is protective of her mother and her autistic brother and is trying to protect their privacy whilst being thrust into the very public limelight as Nathan’s new girlfriend. This provides the main conflict for the novel, which is admirably sustained throughout.
And did I mention sexy? This book should come with a label warning potential readers it contains very, very, sexy love scenes. So go forth and enjoy. You might need to put the fan on …
What the what?!
Why would anyone think this? There are no pictures of them getting up close and personal, she’s not famous. I don’t understand why this would ever have been a thing!
Of course after that things go crazy and excessive, meaning Sophia has to flee home to protect her family. But Nathan thinks the only way to kill off the attention is for them to spend more time together (why? Surely him getting snapped with someone else would have been better, but no, this is romance). So he takes her to a premiere, where the media that has been hounding her and her family for an entire week completely forget who she is.
I have no words.
At this point I put the book down, thinking I would never finish it. Mostly because I didn’t care much for Sophia (yes, she’s been through a lot, but she’s not particularly nice and I have no idea why Nathan even likes her, let alone wants to spend time with her) and Nathan had no personality beyond being famous and beautiful. However, I came back to it because I was curious as to why it has largely positive reviews.
And to be honest it’s okay, if you can put the incomprehensibility of the whole set up to one side. He is famous, she is not, the press are terrible, fame is cruel, they both have family issues and possessive/jealous moments. There is chemistry, there is glamor, but there’s also some nice downtime where they get to know each other properly. It also has a completely cheesy ending which makes my eye twitch because come on, one phone call? (Wasn't he was still phoning her? I know I would if I’d been told of that situation.) Talk, people, talk!
Yeah, so suspend your disbelief in many different ways, sit back and relax into the pure escapism of a mega film star falling for a random normal woman. It’s enjoyable in an easy, don’t think too deeply, kind of way and the stick figures are definitely cute. I’m glad I finished it, but I don’t think I’ll return for best-friend Jess’ story.

Sophie King is on a working holiday with her best friend with a job on a paediatric rotation at the Queenstown Medical Centre, NZ. She is called out to a remote location to tend to the famous British actor, Nathan Banks where sparks fly in more ways than one and she is unwillingly thrust into the spotlight, shattering her anonymity that she has fiercely protected since her father disgraced their family and they became paparazzi fodder. Tempers flare as they each accuse the other of leaking their whereabouts to the press.
As is typical where the paparazzi is concerned, things spiral out of control and the attention on Sophie ends in her position at the medical centre being terminated, and she has no alternative but to return home to London and try to minimise the attention on her family. As Nathan comes to understand why Sophie is so protective of her privacy, he offers to help with the situation. As they try to outsmart the paparazzi and play them at their own game, they find themselves falling for each other, but their own insecurities and lack of trust hold them back.
Sophie took on a lot at a young age when her mother checked out on her and her autistic brother, too overcome with her own grief and humiliation. Sophie was guarded and uncomfortable accepting help because of this, fiercely protective of those she loved and her privacy. I felt her emotional pain when she tells Nathan of her history and I did understand why she was so unwilling at times to hand over control of the situation to another, stubborn as seemed on the surface. It’s funny how people are so quick to believe what those gossip rags say sometimes, and Sophie was guilty of this on a few occasions but ultimately, the one occasion that she should have trusted Nathan, she didn’t, and that broke my heart. She certainly had her fair share of baggage and she needed to deal with her past to have any chance with Nathan. I am happy to say she did, although testing my patience at times, she really did put it all on the line, and I will remember her grovel as one of the better female grovels on my list.
Nathan was charismatic, charming with a wicked sense of humor and, as you can guess, extremely good looking, virile and sexy. He did have his own issues to deal with though, that went beyond the paparazzi and the trimmings that came with his Hollywood fame. His insecurities stemmed from his family, his father in particular, and this, together with a very public betrayal by a past lover, added depth to his character and to the story. The public knew him as confident and self assured but underneath was pain from rejection and a lack of trust of those outside his close knit circle, which I understood. I loved Nathan and how he went about declaring his interest and then love for Sophie. He was so romantic and sincere, with little sweet gestures proving he was smitten and determined to find their HEA together. He was my favourite character of the book.
The chemistry between Sophie and Nathan was strong and their passion was urgent, sensual and sexy. I do love a woman who owns her sexuality and says what she feels, confidently and passionately. Although she didn’t do it as often as Nathan, it was a nice change to have a woman who could dirty talk as well as the man. This whole story was emotive and passionate, each character evolving in the relationship, learning to trust each other and open their hearts. They could easily relate, understanding each other on a visceral level, complimenting each other well, with the dialogue free flowing. I enjoyed this story, the emotional tugs at the heartstrings, the cast of characters, the sexy times and the way Sophie and Nathan fought for each other and declared their love. A great read.
