4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,400 ratings

Alexandra Winifred has played a supporting role in her cousin’s life since they were children. When Lauren Waters' parents are killed in a plane crash, Alexandra becomes her protector, and together they navigate their way through childhood and college. They’re both overachievers, but it’s Lauren who steals the spotlight when she’s discovered by a notable agent and goes on to become an award-winning actress, leaving Alexandra in her shadow as her fledgling publicist.

Now Hollywood royalty, Lauren starts to cut those people out of her life who were responsible for her success. Alexandra fears she will be next on the chopping block. But her trepidation about her failing relationship with her cousin becomes her least concern when she’s identified as a prime suspect in Lauren’s subsequent disappearance. Detective Rachel Storme, who has a full plate taking care of a parent with Alzheimer’s and supervising a meth-addicted aunt, is eager to get her hands on a challenging case, but nothing could prepare her for the dark secrets and lies that she uncovers while she does everything in her power to find out what happened to Lauren.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"You will fall even more in love with Detective Rachel Storme. She is probably one of the most believable and realistic characters I've read about in a long time. She is the daughter every mother would love to have. She is the co-worker everyone would want, but even more than that, she is the person everyone would hope to be. She's loving, loyal and steadfast in her beliefs that right is right and wrong is wrong. If you're looking for a good mystery with lots of twists and turns, as well as wonderfully written characters, this one is definitely for you." Vicki - The Reading Café

"Mystery lovers will enjoy figuring out what actually happened to Lauren Waters as the clues appear. This gripping, page-turner will leave you wanting another Rachel Storm mystery to enjoy." -
Ruth Bridges, Literary Sisters

"Losing Lauren by Alretha Thomas is the second Detective Rachel Storme novel and it is amazing. I love a suspense story that is beautifully crafted. Alretha Thomas does not disappoint with this story. She has crafted a story that keeps you enthralled as you turn each page." -
Moxxley @Platypire Reviews

"Alretha Thomas has delivered another page-turner after "Justice for Jessica". It was difficult to put the book down. Once again, I was on the edge of my seat trying to be with the two main characters and seeing and outguessing each of them as to what the outcome will be like." -

Shortly after graduating from USC with a degree in journalism, Alretha soon realized her interest in her major was not heartfelt. Instead of writing news stories, she wanted to write plays and books. Several years later, her church gave her an outlet to fulfill her writing desires through their Liturgical Fine Arts Department wherein Alretha penned twelve theatre pieces—the community response was overwhelming. This led to plays outside of the church, including Alretha’s One Woman, Two Lives, starring Kellita Smith (The Bernie Mac Show), directed by four-time NAACP Image Award Best Director recipient, Denise Dowse. The production garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences.

In between plays, Alretha self-published her first novel, Daughter Denied, in 2008 and has received glowing reviews from readers and book clubs across the country. Representing her book and plays, Alretha has been the guest on many radio shows and television shows including San Francisco Public Affairs show Bay Sunday with Barbara Rodgers on CBS affiliate, KPIX. She was also interviewed by KTLA News Entertainment Reporter, Sam Rubin. In 2011, Alretha self-published her second novel, Dancing Her Dreams Away, and it was also well received. Her third novel, Married in the Nick of Nine, spawned a four-book series that was acquired by Soul Mate Publishing in January 2014. The series has since reverted to her. In August 2014, Alretha was awarded the Jessie Redmon Fauset Literary Award for her indie novel, Four Ladies Only. In 2016, Alretha created the Detective Rachel Storme Mystery Series: Justice for Jessica, Losing Lauren and A Penny for Her Heart. In 2018 and 2019, Alretha debuted two additional mystery books—The Women on Retford Drive and The Truth About Gretchen, respectively. In 2023, her novel, The Girl in the Blue Blazer debuted. Her most recent novel is The Daughter Between Them.

Alretha is also an actress and can be seen in numerous commercials and television shows. She currently plays Anastasia Devereaux on Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living that airs on BET.

Looks like I have a new favorite author. This novel was a thriller. Detective Rachel Storme is the truth and her partner, Herb Jones, is equally likable. The banter between the two of them is often times smart, sometimes funny, and always entertaining. They are very believable as seasoned detectives. You will love them.

Not everyone in this story has their stuff together though. In fact, there are some pretty jacked up folks in there. Without giving away too much, I'll say that I closed this book satisfied that justice had been served. My heart raced the entire time through the final chapters. I found myself holding my breath at times and at other times hyperventilating. Bravo, Alretha Thomas! Job well done!

This was a good book. It kept me intrigued, wondering who the killer was and who was lying. I read it on my kindle and twice, the name Lauren is used incorrectly. There were a lot of typographical and grammatical errors, so that distracted me somewhat. The author has to find another way to say “knowing glances” because it seems to be used too much. Other than these minor things, this is a good book that I would recommend.

This is the second book in Detective Rachel Storme and it was just as good as the first book. Very intense and gripping, I stayed up till 2:00 AM to finish reading. Rachel is a retired Detective, opened up a flower shop but helps out her old partner Herb Jones as a consultant. When it is a high profile case she gets called in, she has a different way of reviewing the evidence, with a unique perspective. Lauren who has just won the Academy Award goes missing. Some think it's just a publicity stunt. Of the many cast of characters, it kept me guessing and changing my mind on who was involved with Lauren disappearing. The main characters keep evolving and you get to know them more intimately. Some people may not like the sexual connotations in this book.

While this book held my interest, because I liked Rachel, the lead detective, it has the flaw many mysteries have, in that prior to the climax of the book, there were very few hints, which a detective needs, as to who the killer was. The reader needs to be in on the detecting, and not completely surprised.

Lauren and Alex the only discord between them is Larry. Why she doesn’t dump him, he was a cheater, Lauren tells her. Alex is the protector, behind Lauren, while she is the limelight. With Lauren and a ten carat diamond, she doesn’t want to talk about Brad. Then she mentions having nightmares, and changes she was going to be making. When Lauren goes missing Alex is the prime suspect. One wonders was it a publicity stunt,
Good twisted plot, full of intrigue as Detective Rachel figures out what happened.

Alexandra is concerned about Lauren's seeming withdrawal and has Lauren makes it in Hollywood, she tells Alexandra she will tell all soon. Lauren mentions nightmares but puts off telling Alexandra what she has discovered. Then Lauren disappears. Detective Rachel Storme and her colleagues are assigned this high profile case. Rachel likes a challenge, but her mother, her store, and her "aunt" also prove challenging.

There are many hints of the secret Lauren planned to share but it's up to Alexandra to find the truth and share it for her. A compelling read. To say any more would give the story away.

This book was one which held my attention from the start. The many characters were developed - some more so than others and some coincidences seemed a bit manufactured, but as a 'who done it' type story - I never guessed the culprit until near the end. I have read another by this author and find her characters more believable than most police detective mysteries. They have real problems and have families who may suffer due to the demands of police jobs. In the two books I have read (this one and Justice for Jessica) both murders were of very public characters with complicated lives but these complexities were handled well, I thought.
She has a third book out which I have not yet read, but which is sitting on my Kindle now. You won't go wrong with this author!

This was an enthralling read. It was even better than the first book in the series, and I didn't think the author would be able to top herself, but she has. The red herrings, twists and turns and colorful cast of suspects kept me turning the pages, wanting to know what happen to the actress, Lauren Waters. The story is told from the POV of Detective Rachel Storme and the cousin of the missing woman, Alex Winifred. Alex's father is a hoot as well as her mother. They're so many suspects, including Lauren's fiancé, Brad and her actress friend Rosalind. I thought I knew who did it several times, but was never right. The end will take you totally by surprise.

A wonderful batch of characters and a plot with an unexpected climax. Also holds an unstated lesson as to how easy it is to jump to conclusions when not all the facts are in. Nicely written!

This book was well written with a great storyline and character's. I enjoyed reading this book and couldn't put it down.

A young talented actress goes missing and her cousin won't stop until she is found. Who is behind her disappearance? There are a lot of suspects including her cousin but who really knows the truth.
I was quite shocked to find out who was behind it and there are a lot of twists.

Excellent read. I highly recommend this book.
