The Undying: A Dark Space Tale Kindle Edition

3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Varn’s ancestors crashed on the planet centuries before, a hostile world populated by cruel beastmen with a taste for human flesh. Threatened with extinction, the spacefarers created an order of cybernetic warriors to battle the beastmen. In time, these “Undying” carved out a valley the savage natives avoided at all costs, a place the beastmen believed protected by red-eyed, vengeful spirits.

Many have years passed. And the descendants of the spacefarers have all but forgotten the threat of the beastmen. Guardian is the last of the Undying. His sole student, Varn, believes the time of war ended. He is wrong.

Grigor Weeks was born in 1974, drawing his first chilly breaths in a trailer park in the frozen tundra of Northern WI. The trailer had no running water, and a wood burning furnace. He was a quiet child, and a note on an old report card from his kindergarten teacher read, "Honestly, we are not sure what to make of him. During nap time he is quiet and never fidgets, but his eyes never close. He is always watching."

Grigor moved often during his childhood, attending several schools before he reached his teens. He wasn't a model student. He fought often, and by his thirteenth birthday, had accumulated numerous stitches, two broken wrists, and a cracked an eye socket. Despite his roughhousing, Grigor's true joy was found in the library, where the fantastic worlds of heroes and adventure could be found on dusty shelves.

Grigor left home at fourteen, and took a job as a dishwasher at night while attending school during the day. At sixteen, he dropped out of school in order to earn more money at a meat packing plant, and to occasionally travel out to the country to help out on his grandparents' farm. Shortly after turning eighteen, he went back to school to and earned his GED.

Many trails and escapades marked Grigor's late teens and twenties, but he never lost his love for reading. A proud father now, Grigor retains a keen love of the written word, and those worlds a good book can bring to one's imagination.

7/10 These Dark Space tales are a set of apparently unrelated sci-fi stories à la Twilight Zone. They're really short and pretty well written. The label can be misleading as it's not "dark space" stories but rather "space tales" with a dark twist.
Don't think too much because this one has a lot of logic holes. This is a description of a pivotal fight in a much bigger story. Enough background is given to understand the motives of everyone involved but that's about all you get. This one is a little dark for my tastes.
